After Leaving South Sydney

Armstrong retired from rugby league in 1947 to focus on his wrestling career and train as a heavyweight wrestler for the 1948 Olympic Games in London. South Sydney, the NSW Police and the Junee community raised funds to send him over to the Olympics. He would go on to win a further 2 Australian amateur wresting championships. Armstrong won a Bronze Medal in the 1948 London Olympic games and a Gold Medal in the 1950 Auckland Empire Games, before retiring.

He came out of retirement to try and make the 1960 Rome Olympics and again win 2 more Australia Amateur wresting championships. He missed the Rome Olympics through injury but finished his career in the 1962 Perth Commonwealth Games as Bronze Medalist. When he retired he had been the undefeated NSW heavyweight wrestling champion for 23 years. Big Jim was considered one of the best amateur wrestlers in Australia.
