Born Frederick Nurcombe, he would refer to himself as George Dawson after his parents were divorced and his time at Newtown. Dawson made his first grade debut for South Sydney in the 1909 Round 1 clash against Balmain at Birchgrove Oval.
Dawson played 4 seasons with South Sydney between 1909 ad 1912. He played 2 first grade premiership games for South Sydney.
Dawson played his final first grade premiership match in the 1909 Round 2 clash against Newcastle at the RAS Showground. He would play out his career as a fringe second grade player, before moving into club administraton.
In 1923 Dawson was awarded NSWRL Life membership.
