Goodwin made his way to South Sydney from the City Houses competition. In 1939 he trialled as a winger and only touched the ball oce but failed in being grading. He came back in 1940 and chose to play fullback so he could get the ball in his hands more. It turned out he impressed the selectors in his first outing as a fullback and was graded. He made his first grade club appearance in the 1940 Gala Day against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The following weekend on ANZAC Day he made his senior grade and first grade premiership debut in the 1940 Round 1 clash against Western Suburbs at Cumberland Oval.
In late 1940 Goodwin enlisted but over the summer he suffered from Epilepsy and was medical discharged. He then returned to play with South Sydney
Goodwin played 5 seasons with South Sydney between 1940 and 1944. He played 7 first grade premiership games with South Sydney. Overall he played 51 senior grade club and premiership games with South Sydney.
Goodwin played his final first grade premiership match for South Sydney in the 1941 Round 13 clash against Balmain at the Sports Ground.
