Hallett as a schoolboy showed exceptional promise and represented New South Wales schoolboys in 1936. He was ballboy for South Sydney in 1937 and 1938 where he studied the styles of the best players at close range, rather than playing in the juniors. In 1939 he was graded by South Sydney. He made hist senior grade premiership debut in the 1939 Round 3 clash against Newtown at Henson Park. He was called up into reserve grade at the end of the season playing in the 1939 Round 14 Reserve Grade clash against North Sydney at the Sports Ground. The following year as a 18 year old, he made his first grade premiership debut against Newtown at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Hallett possessed a great football brains, straight running and brilliant opening movements. Mainly a centre but reluctantly played fullback, a position that his father made his own.
Hallett enlisted at the end of 1941 and served in Army as a Gunner in the 55th Heavy Artilary Regiment that at was stationed in Darwin during the Japanese bombings. He would regularly play rugby league with Army teams during his period of service. He returned to play with SOuth Sydney at the end of the war.
Hallett played 8 season with South Sydney between 1939 and 1949. He played 67 first grade club games which included 61 first grade premiership games. Overall he played 98 senior grade club games which included 92 senior grade premiership games for South Sydney. He also played one short-form game for South Sydney.
Hallett a New South Wales schoolboy representative made his senior grade debut in in the 1948 Possibles v Probables match in 1948.
Hallett played his final first grade premiership match in the 1949 Round 8 clash against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground. His final first grade club game was in the 1949 Tour clash against Queanbeyan at Seiffert Oval.
