Henry made his way to South Sydney from Gerringong, after unsuccessfully trialling with Newtown. He ws graded at South Sydney in 1939 and made his senior grade debut in the 1939 Round 1 Third Grade clash against St George at Earl Park. Two weeks later he moved up into Reserve Grade in the 1939 Round 3 Reserve Grade clash against Newtown at Henson Park. Mid year he was called up into first grade. First in the Round 2 Minor Competition short form game against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The following day he played his first first grade club game in the 1939 Tour match against Queanbeyan at Queanbeyan. Then the following week he made his first grade premiership debut in the 1939 Round 8 clash against St George at the Sports Ground.
Henry was a five-eighth who came to South Sydney for a opportunity after the retirement of Percy Williams.
