Hines was a member of the South Sydney squad that went on to make the 1939 Premiership decider.
Hines joined South Sydney nearing the end of his career after already representing New South Wales and Australia. Born Edward J., but always known as Ray. Hines played his early rugby league in the NSW Country at Dalton and Gunning before coming to Sydney to play for Western Suburbs for 2 years. He then chose to accept a £4 a game to play again in the country, this time with Maitland in 1935. He represented Newcastle and then NSW Country, before being called up into the New South Wales team where he scored 4 tries in one game against Queensland, which earned selection in the Australian team to tour New Zealand in 1935. Hines then returned to play with Western Suburbs for 2 more years before coming across to play with South Sydney.
In 1938 Hines trialed with South Sydney but missed grading selection. He trialed again with South Sydney in 1939 and was graded. He made his first grade debut in the Round 1 short form minor competition gala day match against North Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The following week he made his first grade premiership debut for South Sydney in the 1939 Round 1 clash against St George at Earl Park.
Hines was a hard running bumping winger.
Hines played only 1 season with South Sydney in 1939. He only played 3 first grade premiership games for South Sydney, not scoring a try. He played 7 senior grade premiership games for South Sydney, scoring only 1 try.
Hines played his final first grade premiership game for South Sydney in the 1939 Round 5 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sports Ground. He played a few more senior grade games, playing his last senior grade premiership game for South Sydney in the Round 7 Reserve Grade clash against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval.
