Jack a South Sydney junior from Maroubra had a rapid rise to first grade. Three weeks before his first grade debut he was playing in the juniors. He made his senior grade club and premiership debut in the 1940 Round 12 Third Grade clash against Newtown at the Sports Ground. The following week he stepped up and played in the 1940 Round 13 Reserve Grade clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sports Ground. The next day he made his first grade club debut in the 1940 Tour match against Goulburn at Goulburn. Then the next week he made his first grade premiership debut in the 1940 Round 14 clash against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval

He enlisted in the Army after this and served in New Guinea where he contracted Malaria while on duty.
