Played in the 1935 Third Grade premiership decider for South Sydney.
McFarlane made his senior grade debut in the 1935 Round 13 Third Grade clash against Western Suburbs at Pratten Park. He would remain with the Third Grade team all the way to the premiership decider. After 2 years away from the club, he returned in 1938 and made his Reserve Grade debut in the 1938 Round 7 Reserve Grade clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sydney Cricket Ground. 2 months later he was called up to make his first grade premiership debut in the Round 11 First Grade clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sydney Sports Ground.
McFarlane would play 2 seasons with South Sydney in 1935 and 1938, playing only 2 club and premiership games. All up he played 19 senior grade premiership club games with South Sydney.
McFarlane played his final first grade and senior grade premiership club game in the 1938 First Grade Semi-Final against Eastern Suburbs at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
