McInerney was a established rugby league five-eighth in the Maher Cup with Gundagai and Temora. A mounted police officer he was transfered from Temora and was a late-season transfer to South Sydney on the eve of the 1939 finals. Suffering a halves crisis, South Sydney held secret behind closed doors special trial for McInerney at the Sports Ground midweek before the finals. He was then rushed into first grade team making his first grade premiership debut in the 1939 Semi-Final against St George at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He missed the premiership decider after breaking his ankle on debut.
McInerney played 2 seasons with South Sydney in 1939 and 1940. He played 5 first grade premiership games. He also played 6 senior grade premiership games in his career.
McInerney played his final first grade club and premiersship game in the 1940 Round 13 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at the Sports Ground.
McInerney who lured back from Merriwa, where he was stationed with the NSW Police force to play against the Army in 1942. South Sydney tried a number of times in 1942 and 1943 to get him to return but without success.
