Murray is a rugby union centre convert who swapped multiple times between rugby union and rugby league during his career. After initially coming through the Randwick rugby union system, he joined St George when he was unemployed in 1935, but after playing as an amateur and dislocating his colarbone, he applied successfully to return to Randwick RU in 1936. In 1936 he broke his collarbone playing rugby union mid season for Randwick and sat out the rest of the year. Then in 1937 he tried again to play rugby league with Maitland United as a amateur. Once again he applied to play with Randwick RU in 1939.
In 1940 Murray trialed with South Sydney and was graded. He got his first taste of first grade during the 1940 Gala day short-form game against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The following week on ANZAC Day 1940 he made his senior grade and first premiership debut against Western Suburbs at Cumberland Oval.
Murray is a center or winger and was considered a footballer with promise and exibited cleverness in attack.
In 1940 Murray joined the RAAF and was initially stationed at Mascot, allowing the opportunity to play for South Sydney.
Murray played 2 seasons with South Sydney in 1940 and 1941. He played 8 first grade club games with South Sydney, which included 7 first grade premiership games. Overall he played 15 senior grade club games with South Sydney, which included 14 senior grade premiership games. He also play 1 short-form game with South Sydney.
Murray played his final first grade club and premiership game in the 1941 Round 3 clash against St George at the Sports Ground.

Returned to play breifly with Randwick RU during the war time amensty period between union and league. Murray progressed in his military career and became a RAAF Cypher Assistant who was posted in the Northern Territory for the later part of the war. After the war he went to live on the South Coast.
