Quinlivan is the 3rd oldest brother in the famous Quinlivan family to play with South Sydney. He is a north coast junior who played in and around Taree, and also had stints at Parkes, Inverall, Armidale and Leeton. Quinlivan was playing for the Fire Brigade RU team in 1937 and 1938 in the midweek competition, when he was selected to play for New South Wales RU team. On the eve of the match against New Zealand All Blacks he was sensationally expelled from Rugby union once the NSW RU realised he played played rugby league for money, he was immediately stood down from the interstate team and promotely expelled from the union. Quinlivan followed his brother to South Sydney in 1940 making his senior grade and first grade premiership debut in the Round 4 clash against St George at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Quinlivan a fine player, is a fireman and found it difficult to secure leave to play rugbyleague. Considered by some to be the best of the Quinlivan brothers, but injury has robbed him of acheiving his potential.
Quinlivan played 5 seasons with South Sydney between 1940 and 1944. He played 20 first grade club games for South Sydney, which included 19 first grade premiership games and 1 first grade cup game. Overall he played 22 senior grade club games, which included 21 senior grade premiership games.
Quinlivan played his final first grade and senior grade club game for South Sydney in the 1944 first grade Round 13 clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sports Ground.
