Singles was a wicketkeeper with Glebe for a number of years before he came over to play rugby league with South Sydney during the war. In 1939 he was playing in the City Houses competition. He made his senior grade club and premiership debut in the 1940 Round 1 Reserve Grade clash against Western Suburbs at Cumberland Oval. A month later he made his first grade premiership debut with South Sydney in the 1940 Round 5 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Oval.
Singles like many players were mobilised in 1941 during World War II acting as a Army driver, who was also seen driving lorry's at HQ in Zetland, while playing rugby league on the weekend.
Singles leadership qualities were recognised early in his career at South Sydney when he was immediately named captain of the 1940 reserve grade team. In 1942 Singles had his jaw broken which ended his season.
Singles played 4 seasons with South Sydney between 1940 and 1943. He played 28 first grade club games with South Sydney, which included 24 first grade premiership games and 2 first grade cup games. Overall he played 47 senior grade club games with South Sydney which included 43 senior grade club games.
Singles played his final first grade premiership game in the 1943 Round 3 clash against St George at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Singles was discharged from military service also in 1943 after damaging both of knees.
