Stokes a South Sydney junior from Alexandria had a rapid rise as a 18 year old. After being graded in 1940 he made his senior grade club and premiership debut in the 1940 Round 1 ANZAC Day Third Grade clash against Western Suburbs at Cumberland Oval. On the same weekend he stepped up into reserve grade in the 1940 Round 2 Reserve Grade clash againstBalmain at the Sports Ground. Then late in the season he made his first grade premiership debut in the 1940 Eound 12 clash against Newtown at the Sports Ground.
Stokes is a centre, who runs straight and is a solid tackler and was considered a better than average fullback.
