Webster, normally a fullback was called in to play five-eighth in the 1939 premiership decider for South Sydney.
Before trying rugby league Webster was a amateur boxer, who had a year boxing professionally in the middleweight division starting as a 15 year old late in 1936..
In 1938 he tried his hand at rugby league making his senior grade debut in the 1938 Round 3 Reserve Grade clash against North Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Mid season in 1939 he was called up into first grade. first playing the Round 2 Minor Competition short-form game against Balmain at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The following day he made his first grade club debut in the Tour match against Queanbeyan in Queanbeyan. A few weeks later during the 1939 halves injury crisis, normally a fullback he moved in and played five-eight making his first grade premiership debut in the 1939 Round 10 First Grade clash aganst Newtown at Earl Park.
Webster was a one of the best defenders in the league, safe handler and having the capacity to go through the line on his own, before a serious knee injury robbed him of long career.
But late in the 1939 Webster injured his knee and bravely played on in the 1939 premiership decider before it was confirmed he needed a cartlidge operation. In early 1940 William Bruce, South Sydney delegate to the league requested successfully that the NSWRL funded £17 17/ to cover the expensive operation to remove his knee cartlidge that was sustained due to playing rugby league. While early signs looked promising he eventually sat out the 1940 season to recover. Late in 1941 he returned for a few games in the City Houses competetion before playing in the Third Grade semi-final at the end of the season.
The knee injury would trouble Webster for the rest of his career, as he played in the South Sydney Junior district competion in 1942, before returning in 1943, only to re-injure it in the 1944 trials. After another 2 years out of the game Webster returned in 1946.
Webster played 5 seasons with South Sydney between 1938 and 1946. He played 21 first grade club games which included 16 first grade premiership games and 2 first grade cup games. He played 47 senior grade club games which included 42 senior grade premiership games. He also played 4 short form club games for South Sydney.
Webster played his final first grade premiership match in the 1946 Round 13 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Oval.
