Wells was a lower grade RU with Redfern and South Sydney Norwoods player before joining the South Sydney league team. A member of the first grade squad, he was listed as the non-playing reserve for 1908 Round 1. He made his South Sydney senior grade debut in the 1908 Round 3 clash against Eastern Suburbs at the RAS Showground. He stepped up to make his first grade premiership debut in the Round 5 clash against Newtown at the RAS Showground.
Wells was a back row forward.
Wells played 2 seasons with South Sydney in 1908. He played 2 first grade premiership games.
Wells final first grade premiership game was in the 1908 Semi-Final clash against Glebe at Wentworth Park. He would play on for a few more second grade games in 1909.
