Willcocks after playing in the 1938 City Houses competition, came across to South Sydney and was graded in 1939. He made his senior grade club and premiership debut in the 1939 Round 1 Third Grade clash against St George at Earl Park. Later that year he stepped up to reserve grade in the 1939 Round 8 clash against St George at the Sports Ground. Willcocks impressed in the 1940 trials scoring 4 tries in a second grade trial. As a 19 year old, Willcocks made his first grade premiership debut for South Sydney in the 1940 Round 5 clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at Belmore Oval.
Willcocks was a back rower who impressed with consistant ball work. Early in 1940 he was considered as one of the best second rowers in Sydney. He was a sound tackler and handled the ball well in the open.
In 1942 Willcocks enlisted in the war effort in the Army on the home front, returning back to South Sydney in 1944.
Willcocks played 6 seasons with South Sydney between 1939 and 1946. He played 34 first grade club games for South Sydney, which included 30 first grade premiership games and 1 first grade cup game. Overall in his career at South Sydney he played 68 senior grade club games for South Sydney, which included 65 senior grade premiership games.
Willcocks played his final first grade premiership game for South Sydney in the 1946 Round 8 clash against Newtown at the Sports Ground. He played his final senior grade premiership and club game for South Sydney in the 1946 Round 14 clash against Eastern Suburbs at the Sports Ground.
