Reserve Grade - NSW Cup - Round 3
v Windsor, Windsor Sports Complex, Sat Mar 29 6:00pm
WIN 30-18
On Saturday night the North Sydney Bears had a 30 to 18 win over the Windsor Wolves to remain undefeated in the VB NSW Cup. Norths were keen to continue the momentum they gained from wins in the first two rounds against Wests and Manly, taking on a Windsor team featuring one of North Sydney's stars from 2007 Joe Williams at halfback. Windsor took a 6-nil lead after 15 minutes of play when Junior Moors crashed over the line. The Bears hit back with an unconverted try 10 minutes later when the ball was spread wide to winger Nathanael Barnes who scored in the corner. In the final 10-minutes of the first half North Sydney got on a role when the Bears New Zealand international halfback Jeremy Smith spotted a gap in the defence and did well to score. This was followed by a try to Shannan McPherson who scored after a good ball from hooker Beau Falloon. Both tries were converted by Beau Champion to give the Bears a 16-6 lead at halftime. Windsor came out fired up in the second half and they were able to take an 18 to 16 lead after Hutch Maiava powered over, followed by a try to their winger Junior Tia Kilifi in the 13th minute of the second half. The Norths forwards were able to work their way back into the game and lay the platform for 3 tries in 8 minutes. Matt Hunt was able to score after scooting from dummy half. North Sydney captain Beau Champion was then able to bust through to score 4 minutes later. This was Beau's 5th try in 3 matches, and he is now top tryscorer in the NSW Cup. The final try was sparked by Sean Dalton's offload to Hunt who spread the ball out wide to Nathanael Barnes who dived over for his second try of the evening. In the final 10 minutes the Bears tried to extend their lead with two field goal attempts, but both were missed, so the score remained at 30 to 18 in the Bears favour. The Players' Player went to lock Shannan McPherson after an enthusiastic game highlighted with some strong runs in the midfield. Luke Grant's tough performance in the front row earned him a call up as 18th man for the South Sydney's NRL team. Second rower Dave Wynyard was another strong performer with some brutal defence.
