LOSS 20-24

The South Sydney Rabbitohs were the better team for 77 minutes of tonight's round one clash with the Roosters, but two tries in the final two minutes saw the visitors steal the victory, 24 points to 20 at ANZ Stadium in front of 18,278 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs led 20 points to 12 until the 78th minute of play, with two late tries sinking the efforts of the men in red and green. The Roosters led early when big prop forward Lama Tasi carried three defenders over the line to score under the posts in the sixth minute of play. The Rabbitohs hit their straps following that try, with Dave Taylor and Sam Burgess causing all sorts of havoc for the Roosters' defensive line. It did not take long for the Rabbitohs to score, with captain Michael Crocker crossing for the Rabbitohs' first try of the season. The Rabbitohs were awarded a penalty close to the Roosters' line and a quick tap from Greg Inglis caught the opposition napping. He offloaded to Crocker who charged straight at a gap, scoring the Rabbitohs' first four pointer. Adam Reynolds converted to give level the scores at six-all. The Rabbitohs hit the lead in the 20th minute when Adam Reynolds delivers a pin point-accurate kick to the right wing, with Chris McQueen flying high above the pack to take the bomb and score the try. The Roosters scored their second try through Aidan Guerra on the left hand side, taking a slender two point lead. With five minutes to go in the half, Reynolds kicked a penalty goal to level the scores at 12-all, the scoreline which would be taken to the break. The Rabbitohs had the ascendancy but the Roosters were hanging in there. The Rabbitohs were making plenty of metres and punishing their opposition in defense, but their opposition just continued to hold on. South Sydney struck first in the second half through barnstorming five-eighth John Sutton. Sutton had been causing problems for the Roosters with his powerful running game and he charged through three defenders from ten metres out to score his try. Reynolds converted to take the lead out to six. A further penalty goal for Souths saw the lead move to eight and the Rabbitohs faithful in the stands felt a little more comfortable in their seats. The Roosters continued to charge at the Rabbitohs but the men in cardinal and myrtle continued to dish out the defence and defend their line. The tide began to turn in the 77th minute when the Roosters made some metres up field into Rabbitohs territory. Prop forward Jared Waerea-Hargreaves scored until the posts in the 79th minute, with Daniel Mortimer's conversion reducing the deficit to just two points. In the final minute of play from the ensuing kick off, the Roosters went right and managed to find some space in the Rabbitohs defensive line. Mortimer charged onto the ball and made some metres before flying fullback Anthony Minichiello chased throw his kick, regathered and scored. the video referee was called to judge on whether Minichiello was onside, as well as checking whether Matt King's effort to hold him up over the line had paid dividends. Unfortunately for Rabbitohs supporters he did score and the victory was stolen from their grasp. The effort of the Rabbitohs cannot be questioned, with some of the forwards turning in 80 minute, quality performances tonight. Sam Burgess was the pick of the bunch, always in the thick of the action and getting the Rabbitohs on the front foot on many occasions.

NSW Cup Round 1

v Balmain Ryde-Eastwood, Conc Sat Mar 3 3:00pm

WIN 32-10

Late Changes McKinnon is out with Hyde starting at hooker. Leo Vaiga started at prop for Sua-Poe and Wilson dropped off the bench. A rusty Balmain Ryde-Eastwood Tigers were convincingly defeated 32-10 by North Sydney in their opening game of the 2012 VB NSW Cup season. The Tigers maintained intensity for the first hour of the game, but were blown away in the final quarter, with simple errors and ill-discipline handing the Bears too many opportunities. The Bears led 6-4 at the break, and while the Tigers evened the ledger at 10-10 mid-way through the first half, North Sydney were simply too good in the back part of the game, running in three tries in short time to blow the scoreline out. The first half was a grinding affair, as the players got used to the heavy ground and swirling wind, but it was the Bears who grabbed first points. A nice offload by Brock Molan got Bennett Leslie into some space, and the Bears captain found the line to give his side an early advantage. Justin Hunt converted from out wide for a 6-0 lead. The Tigers were next to strike however with spectacular kick-pressure from Linc Port forcing the error from the Bears fullback, as Limoni Kamuta pounced on the loose ball and dove over the line. Sean Meaney was unable to convert, and the Tigers trailled 6-4. The remainder of the first half was quite a dour affair, with neither side able to complete their sets, and making plenty of handling errors. The Bears took a 6-4 lead into the break, and then scored first in the second half, with Keiran Vale dummying his way through the line, and then beating Port to the line to score. Hunt missed the conversion, but the Bears still held a 10-4 lead. The Tigers didn’t give up though, and hit back through Tangele Naiyaravaro, who barged his way over the line from close range. Meaney made no mistake this time, levelling the scores at 10-10 early in the second half. But from that point on the Tigers were their own worst enemies, handing the Bears possession in good positions and failing to slow their momentum in attack. Twice former Tigers pair Ryan Carr and Hunt combined to send Hunt over, while lock Ben Lowe also got over the line from dummy half after halfback Carr charged down a Dane Chisholm kick. The final score of 32-10 was a fair indication of the game, with the Tigers constantly shooting themselves in the foot, and the Bears taking full advantage.
