Late Changes

King was out. Inglis started at fullback, Merritt to right wing and Everingham into right center. In the forwards Luke Burgess started at prop and Dave Taylor started in the second row. Geddes and Pettybourne dropped back to the bench. Starling and McQueen dropped off the bench. Sutton was captain.

WIN 36-18

Rabbitohs fans would be wishing Origin was played every week with Greg Inglis and Dave Taylor turning out five star performances to guide the side to an ultimately comfortable 36-18 win. Despite the short turnaround from Origin, Inglis was the star scoring two tries and setting up two other to guide the Rabbitohs to their fourth successive win and a top four spot (albeit temporarily). Dave Taylor was similarly destructive, scoring two tries and making three linebreaks in a dominant display. Coach Michael Maguire sprung an early surprise naming Inglis in the centres with Merritt, as named earlier in the week, starting at fullback. On a cold night at ANZ Stadium the early exchanges were fairly ugly with both sides spilling the ball repeatedly and subsequently no real opportunities presented themselves. The Rabbitohs were the first to hold onto the ball for any extended period and soon unleash a flurry of attack which broke the game apart. With the line in sight Inglis ghosted to the left side, holding the ball up perfectly before dishing out wide to Justin Hunt for his maiden NRL try in the 12th minute. Reynolds failed to convert but the lead was soon 8-0 when Taylor easily crashed over on the right hand side after sustained Rabbitohs attack. Reynolds again failed to convert. John Sutton who was dangerous all night, by hand and foot put Inglis through a gap with a lovely inside pass, the QLD centre easily swerved around fullback Reec Robinson and it looked like a blowout was on the cards at 14-0 after just 18 minutes of play. Momentum was to swing quickly however. A handling error by Inglis, then a string of penalties allowed Jarrod Croker to score the Raiders first points after debutant Edrick Lee found space on the left wing. Croker failed convert his own try to trail 14-4 with 23 minutes on the clock. Croker scored a double just 6 minutes later in a bizarre play when Merritt failed to ground a grubber from McCrone. It took the video referee several looks to award the try. Croker missed the easy conversion but that gap was just two points at the half when Joel Thompson scored the visitors third in a row. Canberra were awarded a penalty 30 metres out from the South Sydney line with under a minute remaining in the half and they took the Rabbitohs by surprise taking the tap rather than the easy 2 points. It looked to be a mistake with the defence holding firm but with the Raiders forwards soaking up defenders, Joel Thompson managed to cross on the far right with 15 seconds on the clock. Croker missed the conversion again on what was a tough night for the kickers for a 14-12 scoreline at halftime. Reports were that Coach Maguire gave the side an almighty spray at halftime for surrendering the lead. It wasn't the best start to the half however with Ben Lowe conceding a penalty and Everingham wrapped up in goal soon after. That began a period of sustained pressure from the Raiders but the Rabbitohs were able to soak it up before Taylor unleashed a barnstorming run. The Raiders received a penalty but weren't able to find touch, Dylan Farrell batting the ball back. There was a quick scramble before Taylor found the ball in his hands and tiptoed down the sideline for a 40 metre run. Off the back of that run, Ben Lowe was able to bust his way over the line to extend the lead to 18-12. With Reynolds receiving treatment for a knee knock, Issac Luke converted for an 8 point lead. Three minutes later the Rabbitohs scored another with Dylan Farrell breaking his try drought. John Sutton and Sam Burgess combined to put Farrell into space on the left and he strolled over under the sticks. Luke converted again and the Rabbitohs led 26-12. Dave Taylor completed his double in the 57th minute combining with Origin teammate Greg Inglis and once again the Rabbitohs assumed control of the match and led 32-12. Inglis wasn't done with yet as he beat four tacklers to score his sixth try in three matches and the match was over with less than 10 minutes on the clock at 36-12. With the 24 point lead, the Rabbitohs temporarily held third spot on the ladder but a late consolation try to Reece Robinson pushed the red and green back to fourth place. The Rabbitohs now look ahead to an exciting clash against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium next Saturday night.

NYC U20 Round 11

v Canberra

Fri May 25, 5:15pm

LOSS 24-36

Late Changes, Croad and Matthews were out. Turnerand Jerrett started in the second row. Rod Merritt replaced Place on the bench. The Rabbitohs got off to the ideal start when Jordan Tuiavaii crashed over under the posts in the second minute after some clever lead up play. Apisai Koroisau converted for a 6-nil lead. The Raiders seemed to settle after the early shock and the next 10 minutes were a tight arm wrestle. The larger Canberra forwards slowly gained momentum and they were nearly rewarded when back rower Hayden Crockett was held up over the line. But there was no stopping Sheen Lomax 2 minutes later when he crossed for the Raiders first try in the 14th minute. Mitchell Cornish converted to tie the scores 6-6. After Crockett was again held up over the line the Raiders took the lead when fullback Jack Ahearn crossed for a 12-6 lead. Soon after, the Raiders Mitchell Cronin got on the end of a freakish pass from winger Brad Smith to score adjacent to the posts. Cornish converted for an 18-6 lead. With the Raiders forwards dominating, the Rabbitohs halves in Luke Keary and Dylan Walker were finding the going tough, often having to create off the back foot. Extremely brave line defence by South Sydney was the only thing preventing a blowout with the Raiders held up over the line no less than 3 times in the first half. With the Raiders camped on the Rabbitohs line, it eventually broke with Mitchell Allwood crossing after repeat sets. Cornish converted again to lead 24-6 and there were huge danger signs for the Rabbitohs. Something special was needed to close the gap and just on halftime Rabbitohs centre Aaron Gray streaked away down the right wing after Tyrone Phillips put him into space. Koroisau converted to give the red and green some hope trailing 24-12 at the half. The Rabbitohs came out the stronger of the teams early in the second half and in the 50th minute Jesse Robert scored after some great lead up work from Dylan Walker, closing the gap to 24-18. That score was soon erased when Jack Ahearn completed his double and with 23 minutes remaining the Raiders held a 30-18 lead. Trailing by two converted tries a little luck was needed and it came when Hayden Crockett was sent off for a professional foul in the 68th minute. Looking to press the advantage the Rabbitohs spilled possession on a number of occasions and it would be the Raiders who would put the game beyond doubt, Allwood crossing for his second with 8 minutes remaining. Tyrone Phillips who was one of the Rabbitohs best would score a consolation try and keep the score respectable at 36-24 but ultimately the Rabbitohs were outclassed by a Raiders side who will feature heavily in finals action. Credit must go to the Rabbitohs side who hung in all day under constant pressure

NSW Cup Round 13

v Mt Pritchard, North Sydney Oval

Sun May 27, 3:00pm

WIN 30-20

Late Changes, Vale and Corrigan were out James Roberts started at fullback. Leslie started in the centers. McQueen and Starling started in the second row with Ha'angana at lock. Molan dropped back to the bench. Hyland, Hyde and Hawkins dropped off the bench. Hunt was also out with Carr starting five-eighth and Simpson at half. North Sydney took on the Mounties at North Sydney Oval on Sunday afternoon. The Bears extended their run at the top of the ladder with a 30-20 victory, the Bears were again without star Justin Hunt but welcomed back Josh Starling, James Roberts and Chris McQueen with a 10 point win over the Mounties. The Bears got off to the perfect start. In the ensuing set after earning a goal line drop out, Nathan Peats got out of dummy half and drew defenders before giving a short ball to a hard running George Burgess who ran over the fullback and scored next to the posts. James Roberts, who replaced Bears fullback Keiran Vale, easily converted to give the Bears an early 6 nil lead. The Bears gave away a penalty 20 metres out from their line for a strip and the Mounties took advantage of their field position with a try to winger Suni Fatialofa. Pat Galea got an offload to Dean Springfield who floated a ball to the Fatialofa who scored in the corner. North Sydney gave away back to back penalties and again the Mounties crossed in the corner through Fatialofa. Dean Springfield read the numbers and shifted the ball to his fullback whose cut out ball found the winger for his second of the day. Scott Jones converted from the same position as his previous kick to give the Mounties a 10-6 lead. The Bears struck back to get back into the lead midway through the first half. After Matt McIlwrick was penalised for holding down the defender for too long, Adrian Ha’angana put George Burgess through a hole, who beat the fullback and crossed for his second of the afternoon. Roberts again made no mistake to restore the Bears lead at 12-10. Ha’angana was proving to be hard to contain after breaking the line down the short side, which put the Mounties on the back foot. Neenan Simpson passed to James Roberts who drew a defender to create an overlap on the Bears right side before giving the ball to Bennett Leslie who put Fetuli Talanoa over in the corner. James Roberts converted from the sideline to give the Bears a 18-10 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. Less than 10 minutes after halftime the Mounties reduced the Bears lead with a try to Pat Galea. The Mounties opted to run the ball on the last and Springfield’s pass isolated halfback Neenan Simpson who had no chance at stopping the bigger Galea. 6 converted and the Mounties had cut the Bears lead to 18-16. The Bears didn’t have to wait long to regain their 8 point advantage with Paul Vaughan knocking the ball on in the first set after the try to 12. Replacement Brendan McKinnon scooted out of dummy half with the Mounties defence retreating and beat 2 defenders to score, with Roberts again converting. With just over 10 minutes remaining Ryan Carr split the defence with a dummy 20 metres out from the line. Carr drew the fullback and gave the ball to Chris McQueen, with no defender in front of him he put the ball down under the posts. James Roberts converted and the Bears had a 30-16 lead with the clock winding down. Mounties replied with a third try to Suni Fatialofa. Scott Jones put in a short kick on the last and Suni outsprinted Talanoa to put the ball down in the corner. Jones missed the conversion and the score stayed at 30-20. This would prove to be the final sore and the Bears secured back to back wins after the bye. Coach Wayne Lambkin was disappointed with his team’s performance in a match that was riddled with errors and penalties, “The effort and intensity wasn’t there.” Lambkin conceded that his team can’t expect to play that way and stay atop the ladder.
