WIN 38-16

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will line up against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in next Saturday night's Preliminary Final, for a spot in the 2012 Telstra Premiership Grand Final, having defeated the Canberra Raiders 38 points to 16 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Saturday). 35,874 Members and supporters saw the Rabbitohs run in six tries to three, including a double to rookie winger Andrew Everingham, in a dominant display on home turf. The Rabbitohs lost try scoring machine Nathan Merritt and rugged forward Jason Clark within 24 hours of kick off, but these set backs did not hurt the Rabbitohs as they went to win their second finals match of the season in dominant fashion. Co-captain Roy Asotasi took the first hit up and was met with solid defence, setting the scene for the opening period of the game. The Rabbitohs had the better of the opening exchanges, making good metres and spending a majority of their time in Raiders' territory. The Rabbitohs posted first points in the eighth minute of play when halfback Adam Reynolds crossed underneath the posts. Hooker Issac Luke made the bust up the middle, offloading to five-eighth John Sutton. Sutton beat two defenders and drew the fullback to put Reynolds away under the black dot for a 55 metre team try. Reynolds converted his own try to take the scores to six-nil in favour of South Sydney. The Rabbitohs were full of confidence and seemed to be breaking the line with ease, especially in and around the ruck. A penalty to the Rabbitohs in the 18th minute gave Reynolds a shot at penalty goal, which he knocked over the crossbar to extend the lead to eight. The video referee denied Michael Crocker a try in the 22nd minute when it was ruled Raiders five-eighth Josh McCrone had grounded the ball in goal, giving the Rabbitohs a chance to attack in Canberra territory again. The pressure paid off, with winger Andrew Everingham crossing out wide for the Rabbitohs' second try of the night in the 23rd minute. The Rabbitohs worked the ball forward to the left of the posts, then swung it to the right. It started with Sutton who found fullback Greg Inglis. Inglis shifted the ball on to Reynolds who found Luke, then on to centre Dylan Farrell and finally Everingham who dived over in the corner. The video referee awarded the try, and with Reynolds converting from centimetres inside the western touch line, South Sydney had extended their lead to 14-nil. The Rabbitohs conceded a penalty in the 29th minute, giving the Raiders some much needed field position and they made the most of it. From the ensuing set of six, halfback Sam Williams scored after the video referee ruled that second rower Joel Thompson had not obstructed any defenders, and Josh Dugan's conversion pegged the scoreline back to 14-6 in favour of South Sydney. Three minutes later the Raiders struck again through winger Sandor Earl. The Raiders had powered their way back up field, enabling Williams to put in an accurate cross field bomb. Earl outjumped Justin Hunt for the ball and scored the try. Dugan's conversion attempt hit the upright, leaving the scoreline at 14-10, South Sydney's way. The Rabbitohs scored again in the 37th minute of play off the back of a Raiders' penalty, giving them good field position inside the Raiders' half. A crossfield bomb from Reynolds was pin point-accurate, allowing centre Chris McQueen to climb above the pack to secure the ball. He landed, flicked the ball out the back to Sutton who went one pass wide to Sam Burgess on the left. Burgess dummied and charged through the hole, scoring Souths' third try of the game. Reynolds converted, taking the half time scoreline to 20-10 in favour of South Sydney. Sutton, Luke and Sam Burgess were powering through the Raiders' line, especially up the middle of the field. Dave Taylor was causing the Canberra defence some issues on the right hand side of the field, and the Rabbitohs' defence was solid except for a short five minute period at the back end of the half which saw Canberra register two tries. The Rabbitohs were on the attack from the start of the half, with Farrell crossing for the red and green's fourth try. Reynolds grubber-kicked to the in goal, with Dugan missing the ball and failing to secure it, allowing Farrell to charge through and score. Reynolds converted to extend the lead to 26-10. Inglis pulled off another huge try saver on the line in the 49th minute on Williams, forcing a turn over. The Raiders were starting to make inroads up the middle and their backing up was excellent through the ruck. An error from Dave Taylor gave the Raiders some much needed field position in the 52nd minute, then one minute later Blake Ferguson scored for the 'Green Machine' in the right hand corner. Dugan converted to reduce the deficit to ten points. Adam Reynolds was starting to step up his kicking performance, consistently putting the Raiders under pressure with his perfect touch. It was never more prevalent than when he grubber kicked under pressure towards the Raiders' line, then chasing through the kick with Taylor to pin the Raiders in goal for a drop out. From the repeat set the Rabbitohs would be denied a try by the video referee when Sutton was ruled to be held up, but Souths received a penalty for offside play with the Raiders having three markers at the play-the-ball. Reynolds kicked the penalty goal to establish a 12-point lead. Another simple error from the Raiders led to the next try, with Greg Inglis being awarded a penalty try in the 64th minute of play. Luke Burgess made a bust up the middle of the field and passed to his left to Inglis who was certain to score. That was until he was tackled by Ferguson without the ball. The video referee awarded a penalty try to Inglis, with referee Matt Cecchin pointing to the spot underneath the crossbar. Reynolds converted from in front to extend the lead to 18 points. Inglis was coming into his own in attack, returning the kicked ball with gusto and tearing the Raiders' defence to shreds. He played a massive part in the next try when he collected the ball from a kick on his own goal line, charging 65 metres up the left hand flank on a weaving run that had all 35,000-plus spectators on the edge of their seats. From the next play-the-ball, the ball was swung to the right, finding Reynolds who showed his ability with the boot once again, chip-kicking to the right flank. Everingham saw the opportunity to snatch the open ball, picking it up centimetres in from touch, then diving for the corner, scoring a spectacular try in the 68th minute that started on the Rabbitohs goal line just 30 seconds prior. The Rabbitohs were full of confidence and continued to pepper the Canberra defence. A long break from McQueen gave the Rabbitohs another chance to score but the scoring play did not eventuate. Reynolds tried to add an extra point in the penultimate minute of play, but the Rabbitohs would end up running out convincing victors, 38 points to 16. The Rabbitohs played a dominant game throughout the 80 minutes, and will be ready to take on the minor premiership-winning Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in next Saturday's Preliminary Final - the Grand Final Qualifier.

NSW Cup 1st Elimination Semi-Final

(3v6) v Newtown, Leichhardt Oval

Sun Sep 16, 3:00pm

LOSS 30-32

Late Changes Keary replaced Hawkins at Five Eighth. Corrigan started in the center while Nichols started on the bench. Hyde dropped off the bench The North Sydney Bears have bowed out of the NSW Cup Finals for 2012, falling to the Newtown Jets 32 points to 30 in golden point extra time at Leichhardt Oval today (Sunday). The Bears led for most of the contest, with the Jets first lead coming in the 83rd minute of the match when Newtown slotted the match-winning penalty goal. The opening exchanges were tight with neither side giving an inch to their opposition. The Bears were the first to crack the opposition's defensive line with five-eighth Luke Keary crossing for the Bears in the tenth minute of play. He converted his own try to take the score to six-nil in favour of North Sydney. Norths continued to pile on the presssure, but the Jets were next to score through winger Justin Carney. Daniel Mortimer converted to lock the scores up at six-all. Seven minutes later, Bears centre Bennett Leslie scored, diving on a deft grubber kick, with Keary's conversion extending the lead to 12-6 the Bears' way. In the 37th minute of play, Norths hooker Brendan McKinnon scored the red and black's third try for the match, and Keary made no mistakes adding the extras to extend the lead to 18-6 at half time. The Bears continued to mount pressure in the second half with Kieran Vale looking set to score, poor handling the only thing to prevent him from scoring the Bears' fourth four-pointer. In the 53rd minute of play, North Sydney winger Curtis Johnston crossed following a great effort to get over the line, Keary's conversion establishing a 24-6 lead. The Jets struck back five minutes later through big prop-forward Mose Masoe, with Mortimer's conversion reducing the deficit to 12 points. Six minutes down the track and Newtown scored again with Carney completing his double. Mortimer converted to take the scoreline to 24-18 in favour of the Bears after 64 minutes pf play. The Bears struck back almost immediately, with NSW Cup team of the year member Ryan Carr slicing through the Bluebags' defence to score a try. Keary slotted the extras once again to re-establish the 12 point advantage with just over ten minutes left on the clock. The Jets hit back straight away to keep themselves in the contest, with Masoe scoring his try for the match with eight minutes remaining. Mortimer converted to take the scoreline to 30-24, Norths' way. Both sides threw everything they had at each other over the final five minutes, with a game-sealing field goal for the Bears being charged down by the Jets, giving them a chance to attack. It was a chance they took, with Mortimer scoring a try and kicking the conversion to lock it up at 30-all with just two minutes left on the clock. The Bears had one last chance to seal the game in regular time, with a late shot at field goal falling short, sending the game into golden point extra time. North Sydney kicked off in golden point extra time, giving their defence a chance to dominate and gain some positive field position. The Jets took the ball down field and the Bears conceded a penalty, giving the Jets a chance to steal the win with a shot at penalty goal through Mortimer. He kicked the goal, taking out the game 32-30. The Bears fought hard throughout the contest and had a good season to finish the regular season in second position. Unfortunately the cards did not fall their way in the finals, bowing out in week two of the NSW Cup finals. Congratulations to Coach Wayne Lambkin and his team on a quality season of NSW Cup football. McKinnon placed on report for a high tackle
