WIN 26-12
The South Sydney Rabbitohs blew the Brisbane Broncos away in a stunning eight minute period early in the second half to maintain their unbeaten away record for season 2013 with a 26 points to 12 victory at Suncorp Stadium tonight in front of 39,111 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs trailed 12-8 at the break, but three tries between the 45th and 53rd minutes established an unassailable lead as they recorded their seventh win of the season. The Rabbitohs were under pressure from the second tackle with Sam Burgess spilling the ball in front of his own posts, but as they did last week, the Rabbitohs' defence on their own line held strong, and they were able to work it out of their own end on the back of a couple of penalties. One of those penalties came from an Alex Glenn shoulder charge on Adam Reynolds deep in Broncos territory, and Reynolds slotted a fourth minute penalty goal to give the red and greens an early two-nil lead. The Rabbitohs put themselves under the pressure with more handling errors, but their defence stood strong, holding out the Broncos on multiple occasions close to their own line. The video referee was called on to rule on a possible Jason Clark try in the 15th minute when he carried two defenders over the line, only to have the ball kicked from his grasp by Broncos fullback Corey Norman over the line. This was a penalty and the Rabbitohs had the ball in good field position, only to see Sam Burgess lose the ball near the line and turn over possession. This did not deter the Rabbitohs, with Issac Luke pulling off a perfect tackle on Ben Hannant, dislodging the ball and giving the Rabbitohs back the ball in good field postition. South Sydney made the most of the opportunity, with the previously unlucky Clark scoring his first try of the season in the 19th minute. He took on the line with one of his customary front row charges, beat the tackle of Matt Gillett and stepped off both feet to cross just to the right of the uprights. Adam Reynolds converted to take the scoreline to eight-nil in favour of the good guys. The Broncos registered their first points in the 29th minute following three repeat sets deep in South Sydney territory. The Rabbitohs were able to repel Brisbane twice, but the third time Scott Prince managed to get around his defender to score to the right of the posts. Prince converted his own try with a conversion that bounced off the left hand upright, taking the scoreline to eight-six in favour of the Rabbitohs. Six minutes later the home side scored their second try through centre Jack Reed, after the video referee took numerous looks at a possible knock on from the English international. The try was deemed to have been scored and Prince's wide conversion gave Brisbane a 12-8 lead just before half time. The Broncos turned in a strong defensive set but Andrew Everingham put a massive hit on Jack Reed to match the Broncos' efforts. The Rabbitohs put on an attacking raid in the final minute of the half, but points could not be added and the teams went into the sheds with the Broncos leading 12-8. Nine Rabbitohs players had tallied double figures in defence in the first 40 minutes, with Sam Burgess leading the way with 21 tackles, followed by Issac Luke and George Burgess (17), Roy Asotasi (15), Ben Te'o (14), Adam Reynolds (13), Chris McQueen (12), and John Sutton and David Tyrrell (11). Sam Burgess was also eating up the metres, making 107 metres from his nine first half runs. What was hurting the Rabbitohs was errors, making nine to the Broncos three in the first forty minutes. The Rabbitohs looked more composed when they returned from the break, making the most of an offside penalty which gave them the ball 40 metres out from the Brisbane line. From the ensuing set, the Rabbitohs worked the ball close to the line through George Burgess. On the next play, Issac Luke skipped out to the left and turned the ball inside to a rampaging Greg Inglis who charged over from close range. The video referee was called upon to check obstruction, but no one had impeded anyone, and there was no chance anyone was going to stop 'GI' from there. Reynolds' conversion gave the Rabbitohs a 14-12 lead early in the second stanza. The Rabbitohs scored just three minutes later with the mercurial Nathan Merritt finishing off some brilliant work from Inglis and Bryson Goodwin. Inglis collected a grubber kick one metre out from his own line and beat numerous tackles before offloading to Goodwin on the 20 metre line. Goodwin streaked away down field, only to be felled eight metres out from the Broncos line. He played the ball to Merritt who shapped to go open but dashed to the blind side, getting around the defence, scoring in the left hand corner. Reynolds converted from the western touchline to take the lead out to eight. South Sydney scored their third try of the half in the 53rd minute through hulking five-eighth John Sutton. Great lead up work from George Burgess, charging straight at the black dot, sucked in the defence, and on the next play Sutton strolled through a hole to score to the right of the posts. Reynolds kicked the relatively easy two-pointer to extend the lead to 26-12. Defence was the order of the day for the next 15 minutes, with the Rabbitohs near flawless in their defensive effort, and forcing errors from the Broncos. A long break was made by Jordan Kahu for the Broncos in the 70th minute, but again the Rabbitohs were able to thwart the Broncos' attacking raid, with Merritt flying high to diffuse an attacking bomb. The Broncos had a video referee decision go against them in the 74th minute when Matt Gillett came up with a loose ball from a cross field bomb. He ran into Kahu who in turn obstructed Issac Luke from making a tackle. The Broncos had another chance to score in the 77th minute but the rock solid South Sydney defence held them out again, even holding one attacker up over the line. The Rabbitohs then mounted their own attacking play, only to have a deft John Sutton pass to Nathan Merritt called back for a forward pass in the 78th minute. The Rabbitohs finished off the half with a clean sheet on the scoreboard, taking out the game 26 points to 12. The Rabbitohs were outstanding in defence in the second half, barely giving the Broncos an inch as they moved to 14 competition points on the Telstra Premiership ladder

LOSS 20-22
Late Changes Matakaiongo dropped off the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs' under 20s Holden Cup side has fallen two points short of defeating the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium tonight (Friday), with the scoreboard reading 22 points to 20 at full time. Goal kicking proved to be the difference with both sides scoring four tries-a-piece, with halfback Christian Hazard collecting a double. The Rabbitohs opened the scoring in the third minute through Hazard, following two good offloads from prop Daniel Smith and winger Alex Johnston. The Broncos struck back straight away, scoring in the sixth minute of play through second rower Caleb Timu. Ashley Taylor converted giving the home side a 6-4 advantage. Six minutes later the Rabbitohs scored their second try, with fullback Tyrone Phillips dancing through the defensive line to score to the left of the posts. Will Paterson converted, establishing a four-point buffer for South Sydney. Hazard's short kicking game was very strong, keeping the Broncos under pressure and earning repeat set-on-repeat set. He was rewarded with his second try for the match in the 26th minute when he sliced through to score out wide on the left, taking the lead to 14-6. Timu scored his second try for the Broncos in the 38th minute, taking on the winger with his size to score in the right hand corner. The conversion was unsuccessful and the Rabbitohs led at the break, 14 points to 10. Broncos prop Ben Garcia was the first to score in the second half with a strong charge to the line in the 49th minute, with Taylor's conversion giving the Broncosa two-point lead. The Broncos scored again in the 62nd minute when fullback Kurt Capewell chased through a grubber kick to score on the right. Taylor converted to extend the lead for the home side to eight points. The Rabbitohs hit back 15 minutes before full time when winger Alex Johnston made the most of a long break from Phillips, scoring to the right of the posts. Paterson converted, reducing the deficit to just two points. The Rabbitohs tried hard to break the Broncos' line again over the final stages of the match, and had their best opportunity to score with a minute left in the match, but the final grubber kick trickled long and the Rabbitohs had gone down in a thriller, 22 points to 20.

NSW Cup Round 8
v Wests-Tigers, North Sydney Oval Sun May 5 3:00pm
LOSS 12-16
Late Changes Evans, Turner, Fepulai and Groom were out. Starling (prop), Leslie (second row), Hunt (fullback) and Farrell (five-eighth) started. Lupi and Nicholls moved to the bench. Wests Tigers upset North Sydney Bears and put an end to their winning streak with a 16-12 win at North Sydney Oval. Jacob Miller led his injury-ravaged team around brilliantly and Matt Groat was very impressive in a match that was riddled with errors. Luke Keary’s clever grubber gave the Bears a repeat set inside the Tiger’s twenty metres and the first chance of the game fell to Aaron Grey, but the centre couldn’t control the bouncing ball and knocked the ball on over the line. The Bears had another opportunity minutes later when Taqele Naiyaravoro dropped Luke Keary’s cross-field bomb. Keary then put Justin Hunt through a hole but the fullback couldn’t keep hold of the ball and knocked on, metres short of the tryline. Wests first genuine chance of the game took twenty minutes and if not for a courageous tackle from Gray, they could have hit the lead. Centre Josh Davis broke the line down the left edge and Gray put his body on the line, launching himself at Davis and nullifying the attack. The match was a genuine battle of the two forward packs with fiery hooker Masada Iosefa in the thick of the action. Iosefa gave away a penalty and then was marched ten metres by the ref, giving Bears the chance to posts first points of the afternoon. A strong run from Tom Burgess had Wests on the back foot and Luke Keary took full advantage putting Jesse Roberts in for the first try. Keary called for the ball left and his short ball to Roberts put the backrower through a gap and over the try line. Dylan Walker kicked the conversion to give Bears a 6-0 lead. Tom Burgess was injured minutes after the try and would not return for the rest of the match, leaving Norths a player short for the afternoon. Norths put themselves under pressure with handling errors, but their defence held strong and the Tigers players were guilty of wasting chances with their own errors. Justin Hunt brought the crowd to their feet with a brilliant kick return and line break down the right edge. Hunt broke through the line and was looking like going all the way, but Jacob Miller desperately reached out and grabbed Hunt by the collar and dragged him into touch. Jacob Miller looked to have back up his defensive efforts with a try but was denied by the ref. Luke Brooks kicked cross-field and Miller plucked the ball out of the air and put the ball down over the try line but the ref adjudged the five-eight to be in front of the kicker and was penalised. Wests wouldn’t be denied on their next attacking raid and North Sydney’s defence finally broke on the stroke of halftime. Jarrod Farlow charged onto a lovely short ball from halfback Brooks and ran twenty metres to score in the corner. Sean Meaney converted on the halftime siren to send the teams into the break locked at 6-6. Wests captain Meaney knocked the ball on, ten metres out from his own line, on the first tackle, giving Norths the perfect opportunity to retake the lead straight after the interval. Brad Lupi charged onto a one out pass from dummy half and showed great strength to get through the defensive line and score his first try of the season. Walker converted the try to extend the Bears lead to 12-6. Front rower Lupi then dropped the ball from the restart, giving Wests a chance to hit straight back. Wests went down their right side and created an overlap but winger Mitchell Buckett rushed in off his wing to smother Meaney, forcing a knock-on. Josh Davis’ intercept and offload to winger Naiyaravoro created another opportunity inside the Bears half. Front rower Ava Seumanufagai proved too big and too strong as he crashed over the line to get Wests back in the game. Meaney converted next to the posts and the score was level at 12-12 with twenty-five minutes left. Jacob Miller, a late inclusion into the game, was controlling field position with a brilliant kicking game. But it was constant penalties that were preventing Tigers from taking the lead. Joel Luani was placed on report for a lifting tackle on Matt Hyland giving the Bears an opportunity. The Wests defensive line held strong, holding out back-to-back sets on their own line. Wests were full of confidence after holding the Bears out and went down the other end of the field and got a repeat set through a smart kick from their captain Meaney. Wests took full advantage and a one-handed catch and dive from giant winger Taqele Naiyaravoro into the corner gave the Tigers the lead. Meaney missed the conversion and the score was 16-12 with ten minutes remaining. A drop ball from Matt Groat fifteen metres out from his own line gave the Bears a chance to level the score. Interchange forward Joey Matapuku charged into the line and spun out of a tackle but lost control of the ball. The Bears had one final chance when Dylan Walker went close and Mitchell Buckett tried his luck with a short-side run from dummy half on the last tackle but was forced into touch. Wests had a chance to kill of the gave with three minutes remaining but Meaney couldn’t keep control of the ball after being put through hole by Jacob Miller. A strong effort from Wests halted the Bears run of six consecutive victories.

(1v2) v Parramatta, St Marys Stadium Sat May 4 10:30am
LOSS 16-24
The Parramatta Eels have caused a major upset defeating the previously undefeated South Sydney Rabbitohs 24-16 to claim the 2013 Harold Matthews Cup. Parramatta secured their second consecutive Premiership with interchange forward Cameron King’s double proving the difference in a highly entertaining encounter. In a fast and furious opening to the Grand Final, it was Parramatta who drew first blood with Sione Katoa crashing over on the back of a Michael Doolan cut out pass. The Rabbitohs hit back immediately with Reimis Smith scoring a scintillating 60 metre try to score untouched under the posts, giving South Sydney the lead after 10 minutes. Two quick fire Parramatta tries to Anthony Layoun and Ethan Fagaloa-Time swung the momentum back in the Eels favour with a 14-6 lead at half time. The second half couldn’t have started in worse fashion for South Sydney with a mistake from the kick-off granting the Eels possession inside the Rabbitohs red zone. Cameron King produced a bullocking effort carrying four defenders across the line to make Souths pay for their mistake and extend the Eels lead to 12 points. The Rabbitohs stormed back into the contest on the back of a number of strong charges from Gabriel Hamlin, and when Reimis Smith crossed for his second it was game on in the Grand Final. The South Sydney faithful erupted when Johnathan Tufuga collected a chip-kick to ground the ball inches from the dead ball line for a try, and when Siosifa Talakai converted from the sideline it was 18-16 with only minutes remaining. Parramatta sealed their victory when King barged over for his second try amid wild celebrations from the Eels players who were now Premiership winners for 2013. On behalf of everyone at the South Sydney Rabbitohs, we would like to congratulate the under 16s Harold Matthews Cup team on their fantastic season throughout 2013.
