WIN 28-10

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have won their eighth game of the 2013 season, downing the North Queensland Cowboys 28 points to 10 at ANZ Stadium in front of 15,972 Members and supporters. The Rabbitohs ran in five tries to two in a performance which, at times, lacked the cohesion of previous performances so far this year. The match got away to a relatively slow start, with both sides circling each other like heavyweight fighters in the first round of a boxing match. The teams were going end-to-end on the back of their kicks, and neither side looked like busting the other open. In the 11th minute of play, Cowboys winger Antonio Winterstein scored the first of two tries, following a silly error from South Sydney, leaving a play-the-ball deep in their own half with no dummy half in position. The Cowboys snapped up the loose ball, and it eventually made its way into the hands of Winterstein on the left wing to register the first try of the match. A strong defensive play from Beau Champion in the 23rd minute of play led to the next try, with pressure he applied chasing through a kick forcing a turnover ten metres out from the Cowboys' line. One minute later, Sam Burgess registered the Rabbitohs' first points with a straight, hard charge to the line to the right of the uprights. Adam Reynolds made no mistake with the conversion to give his side a two-point lead. It was only four minutes later that the Rabbitohs would score again, with centre Bryson Goodwin making the most of some 'hot potato' footy to scoop up a free ball and score. Reynolds converted again to establish an eight-point lead. The Rabbitohs were starting to open their shoulders in attack and defence, with the straight brick wall holding out the Cowboys who often looked directionless with a barrage of South Sydney defenders in their path throughout the night. It did not take long for the Rabbitohs to post further points in the second half, with fullback Greg Inglis crossing for his first try of the night in the 42nd minute of play. Five-eighth John Sutton put in a grubber kick behind the play in goal, with Johnathan Thurston trying to shadow the ball over the dead ball line. Inglis snuck under Thurston's guard to pounce on the ball centimetres from the dead ball line to register the four pointer. Reynolds again converted to take the scoreline to 18-4 in favour of South Sydney. Winterstein scored his second try of the night in the 46th minute when a long, pin-point, cross-field kick from Thurston found its mark, allowing Winterstein to score in the left hand corner. Thurston converted from the western touchline to reduce the deficit to eight points. Cowboy Ashton Sims was placed on report in the 54th minute for stray knees to the head of Champion in an attempted tackle, putting his side under pressure, but silly errors from Souths released the pressure valve on a number of occasions and the Cowboys remained in the contest. In the 67th minute the Cowboys' task became near impossible when try scoring machine Nathan Merritt crossed for the 147th try of his career, equalling Rugby League Immortal Bob Fulton in eighth position on the all-time try scorers list. The Cowboys were short in their right side defence, and quick hands down the left found the ball in Merritt's hands, with him touching down in his customary left corner. The Cowboys started to throw caution to the wind and began to look more dangerous in attack. An example was a clever play from Thurston, finding touch with a 20 metre restart giving his side wonderful field position. But it came to nought as the Rabbitohs held out the Cowboys again and again. The straw that broke the Cowboys' back came in the 76th minute with a play that can be described as the most beautiful sight in Rugby League. Greg Inglis, in full stride, flying 90 metres to score under the posts, after cleaning up a loose ball deep in his side's territory. It doesn't come much better than that! Reynolds added the extras from in front, and the Rabbitohs registered win number eight from nine games to start the season. The Rabbitohs were scrappy tonight, but their defence went a long way to helping them win this game. They will need to improve with ball-in-hand however if they are going to continue their excellent start to the season.

NYC Cup Round 9

5:20pm

DRAW 20-20

Team was 1-17 no changes. The Rabbitohs Holden Cup side have fought back to record a thrilling 20-20 draw against the Cowboys at ANZ Stadium. The Rabbitohs started poorly, conceding two tries within the first seven minutes of the game. With their first attacking chance Hayden Crowley crossed on the left before Zac Santo tore the Rabbitohs defence apart from 65 metres out before putting Zac Mackay in under the posts. Mitchell Grimes converted both for a 12-0 lead. The Cowboys were making plenty of inroads but it was Rabbitohs SG Ball recruit Tulsa Samamao who scored next. After Wil Paterson converted from out wide the Cowboys lead was reduced to six points halfway through the first stanza. Saumamao was involved again when a big hit to dislodge the ball held the Cowboys out a metre from the line. From the next set Christian Hazard continued his great form, dashing through the Cowboys line to put Tyrone Phillips in for a try. Wil Paterson’s conversion struck the upright and the Cowboys maintained their two-point lead. Poor handling was costing both sides but the Cowboys were the first to hold onto it for an extended period. A tidy move down the left side allowed Jack Kelleher space and he took full advantage, diving over for a 16-10 lead. Right on halftime Mitchell Grimes landed his third conversion to take an 18-10 lead into the break. North Queensland started the brighter of the two sides in the second half but determined defence held them out. Both teams had early chances in the second half with Hazard once again looking dangerous but poor handling was once again letting down both teams. Cowboys prop Patrick Kaufusi was on report when a high shot had young prop Cheyne Whitelaw dazed. A melee was sparked and it seemed to be what the Rabbitohs needed. From the ensuing play Hazard kicked across field and Paterson leapt high. He was upside down as he placed the ball for an incredible try. He couldn’t convert the effort and the Cowboys maintained their 18-16 lead with 20 minutes to play. An arm-wrestle continued for the next ten minutes before Cameron McInness snatched the lead for the first time. Paterson missed the kick but he made amends soon after with a terrific escape from the in-goal area with seven Cowboys bearing down on him. With time ticking away the Rabbitohs looked to have snatched it before a silly penalty gave Mitchell Grimes a set shot from 30 metres out. He landed the kick with just over a minute left to tie the scores. The Cowboys coughed up possession on the restart and as the siren sounded Christian Hazard shot out to the left, Paterson found space but couldn’t hold onto the ball. After the Cowboys scrambled with the ball they ultimately knocked on leaving the scores tied at fulltime.

NSW Cup Round 9

v Manly-Warringah, North Sydney Oval Sun May 12 3:00pm

WIN 54-6

Late Changes Hunt replaced Evans. Hyland replaced Tom Burgess at prop. Leslie started at second row and Roberts at lock. North Sydney bounced back from a loss to score a massive win over rivals Manly Sea Eagles at North Sydney Oval. Mitchell Buckett scored a hat trick and Dylan Walker kicked seven goals as the Bears got back to its winning ways, scoring ten tries in front of a vocal home crowd. Norths went close early through Mitchell Buckett, only for the winger to be held up in goal. Shaune Corrigan made no mistake on the next play when he crossed over in the right corner when the Bears moved the ball from sideline to sideline. Dylan Walker missed the conversion but the Bears were up 4-0 after ten minutes. Manly prop Ligi Sao gave away a penalty and then was marched 10 metres by the referee for questioning his decision to give the Bears another opportunity. Luke Keary took on the line and nearly scored, but from the play the ball, Walker went down the short side and threw a long ball to Buckett who dived over in the corner to score his side's second. Walker again missed the conversion and the score stayed at 8-0. Manly were lacking discipline as they gave away too many penalites and were coming up with poor final play options as backrower Kasey Greer kicked the ball dead inside the Bears 20 metres. Manly's forwards were keeping them in the game though, with James Cunningham leading the pack. Norths came close to extending the lead, however Bennett Leslie couldn't control Keary's lovely grubber and dropped the ball. Keary was looking dangerous with every touch of the ball and it was his pass that lead to the next try. With nothing happening, Keary chose to run the ball on the last tackle inside his own half and his inside ball to Justin Hunt opened up the defence. Hunt showed blistering pace as he raced downfield and sprint past the fullback to score in the corner, much to the delight of the home fans. Walker nailed the conversion and the Bears extended their lead to 14-0. With two minutes remaining, a late hit on the kicker gave Manly a chance to get back in the game, and again their last play option let them down as the pass out wide went to ground and turned the ball over. Apisai Koroisau broke from dummy half inside his own 30 metres and Dylan Farrell backed up well as Koroisau drew the fullback before his pass to Farrell. Farrell crossed over the tryline untouched, and Walker converted on the halftime siren to send his team into the sheds leading 20-0. The Bears didn't take long to extend their lead over their rivals as they scored on their first set after halftime. Luke Keary put up a towering bomb, Walker regathered and offloaded to Keary, who backed up his own kick and scored under the posts. Walker easily converted to make it 26-0. Manly gave away a penalty on the very next set and the Bears took advantage of the repeat set and scored again. Dylan Walker busted through some soft defence down the left side and raced 30 metres to plant the ball down and convert his own try to make it 32-0. Bears were in again five minutes later, and again it was from the boot of halfback Luke Keary. Mitchell Buckett outleapt his opposite winger to latch onto a pin-point kick from Keary to score in the corner. Walker missed the conversion but the score was 36-0 after just 50 minutes. Justin Hunt's brilliant kick-return set up the next try for North Sydney. Manly kicked deep but Justin Hunt ran through the defence and was tackled 30 metres out from Manly's line. One pass to Buckett from dummy half gave the winger enough room to run down the sideline and score a brilliant hat trick. Walker's conversion extended the lead to 42-0 after 55 minutes. A penalty from Joey Matapuku for a rake gave Manly a rare opportunity to attack the Bears tryline. Manly finally got on the board when big Ligi Sao scooped up a loose ball and charged over. Michael Chapman converted the try to make it 42-6. Sea Eagles backrower Kasey Greer dropped the restart to have his side under pressure again. Matapuku made up for his penalty by crashing over the tryline after a one out pass from dummy half. Dylan Walker kicked another goal to make it 48-6 with just under 20 minutes left. Matt Hyland wrapped up the scoring for the Bears, capping off a great performance with a try after a charging run, brushing off numerous attempted tackles to score beside the posts. Walker's conversion made it 54-6 to seal the big win over archrivals Manly.
