Luke Keary has inspired the North Sydney Bears to a 42-14 win over the Illawarra Cutters. Keary scored two tries and set up two more as his controlled performance was too much for the Cutters in difficult conditions at North Sydney Oval. It wasn’t a great a start for the Bears however, conceding points in the first set after kick off. Jarrad Hickey somehow got away an offload despite the attention of four defenders. Adam Quinlan grabbed the offload on the halfway line and ran into the space created by Hickey's second phase play. Quinlan drew Bears fullback Justin Hunt before passing to Willie Mataka who scored. Harry Siejka missed the conversion to leave the score at 4-0. The Cutters thought they had extended the lead when Buckett spilled the high ball, but Bronx Goodwin was penalised for being offside. The Bears were able to hit back minutes later after a short, flat ball from Nicholls put Jesse Roberts into a gap. The backrower ran 40 metres before giving the ball to Dylan Farrrell who outsprinted the Cutters defenders, to score under the posts. Apisai Koroisau converted the try to give North Sydney a 6-4 lead. The Bears started to gain control after the try and had Illawarra on the back foot thanks to a clever kicking game from North Sydney five eighth Darren Nicholls. A massive hit by Siejka on Justin Hunt swung momentum in favour of the travelling side. On the very next set, halfback Siejka kicked to the corner and Mitchell Buckett was forced into touch. Illawarra looked destined to score but Daniel Vidot dropped the ball in the wet conditions. Norths also wasted a good chance soon after when Keary made a line break with a step off his right foot. After Keary was tackled the ball went left but Kyle Turner’s offload went straight into the arms of Gus Aiga. A penalty for a dangerous tackle gave the Cutters a great opportunity soon after. Harry Siejka received the ball on the left side of the field and gave a pass to his fullback Cummins, who drew the defence in field before a flat pass to Kose Lelei gave the winger enough space to score in the corner. Siejka missed the conversion but the Cutters had regained the lead at 8-6 after 25 minutes. Siejka was in the thick of the action soon after when he accelerated through a hole in the defence, but was dragged down 10 metres short of the line. From the play the ball, a quick pass was given to a charging Kem Seru who at full pace, was never going to be stopped by the retreating defence, as he scored under the posts to extend the lead to14-6. Back to back penalties gave the Bears a rare opportunity inside Illawarra’s twenty metres, and they looked to have scored but Tom Burgess lost the ball over the line after he charged onto a flat ball. Seconds later after a turnover from the Cutters, Justin Hunt showed his speed in broken field and burst into a gap to score under the posts. Dylan Farrell nailed the conversion to reduce the lead to 12-14. Brilliant attacking football saw the Bears go from one end of the field to the other. Although, much to the disappointment of the home fans, they couldn't finish off the attack as Chris Centrone dropped the chip kick from Keary on the try line to leave the score at 12-14 at halftime. North Sydney got off to a perfect start in the second half with a try to Hunt on their first set. Luke Keary again took on the line and again came up with the right play. The halfback looked to go left but straightened the attack and then gave the ball to Hunt who sprinted past the fullback to score his second of the evening. The conversion from Farrell extended the lead to 18-14 On the very next set the Bears were in again. Keary's towering bomb was fielded by King who couldn't control the ball and lost it backwards, but it fell straight into the hands of Tom Burgess. The Bears had come out of the second half full of confidence in their attack and they couldn't be contained. It was Keary leading the change, scoring on the very next set. Keary again displayed his excellent running skills, breaking through the defence and showing enough pace to win the race to the try line. Farrell converted to make it 30-14. The Cutters started to claw their way back into the game and started to dominate possession. They had multiple opportunities inside the Bears half but North's defended resolutely and repelled every attack. The Cutters were dominating possession and field position but just couldn't execute their final play options. Halfback Siejka’s chip and chase created another opportunity however Aiga couldn't hold onto the long ball thrown by the halfback and turned over possession with no North's player near him. Errors started to creep into the game and both North Sydney and Illawarra were finding it difficult to control the ball in the slippery conditions. Darren Nicholls created a chance when he drifted towards the right sideline and gave a lovely pass to Chris Centrone who out sprinted his opposite winger, but put a foot on the sideline in the process, denying a great try. Centrone's next touch of the ball earned his side a penalty giving North Sydney another chance to extend the lead. Nicholls capped a fine performance with a precision grubber kick, which bounced straight into the arms of Luke Keary who scored his 2nd try of the evening. Farrell converted to blow the lead out to 36-14. The Bears were able to score one last try through Nathan Peats on the full time siren to wrap up the game 42-14 after a conversion by Apisai Koroisau.
