WIN 28-8
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have defeated defending Premiers the Sydney Roosters in round one of the Telstra Premiership in front of 27,282 Members and supporters at ANZ Stadium. A hat-trick to Greg Inglis, a try to Bryson Goodwin and a perfect night with the boot for Adam Reynolds was enough to sink the Roosters in the first hit-out of the new year. The Rabbitohs showed some promise in the opening exchanges, with Chris McQueen making a massive break on the back of a set-play in the middle of the field before being taken 15 metres out from the try-line. George Burgess came within a whisker of scoring from the ensuing tackle, but was unable to get the ball over the line. But it was the Roosters who went in right on the half-hour mark when they turned defence into attack on the back of a charge-down – Michael Jennings toeing through the batted down ball to score. James Maloney converted to make it 6-0 in favour of the visitors. With Just under 20 minutes left in the first half, a penalty to the Rabbitohs put the side in good attacking position, and the breakthrough finally came – Greg Inglis powering over the line with brute strength out wide to open the Rabbitohs’ 2014 account. Adam Reynolds converted from out wide to level the scores up. The Rabbitohs showed great enthusiasm through Luke Burgess – the big prop taking two hit-ups in one set before nearly finishing off with a try. But Burgess was ultimately denied by referee Ben Cummins on the grounds of a double-movement. Burgess was at it again mere-minutes later, when on the back of a promising attacking raid, the Englishman again stretched out to score, only this time Burgess knocked the ball on half a metre short. After a torrid period of play that saw a string of mistakes and penalties, the teams went to the sheds locked at six apiece. On the resumption, a penalty to the Roosters within kicking distance allowed James Maloney to break the dead-lock from close range with a penalty-goal to make it 8-6 in favour of the Tricolours. On the back of some brilliant defence from the Rabbitohs that forced the Roosters back in goal, the red and greens put themselves within striking distance and it was Greg Inglis who came away with a second try to take the lead – a brilliant movement from Luke Burgess and Dylan Walker opening a gaping hole for the fullback. Reynolds converted to make it 12-8 in the Rabbitohs’ favour with 27 minutes remaining. A Sonny Bill Williams shoulder-charge attempt on Ben Lowe 29 metres out from the Rabbitohs’ try-line gave Adam Reynolds an opportunity to extend the lead shortly afterwards. The halfback made no mistake before another penalty shortly afterward – this time for holding down in the tackle – gifted Reynolds another two points from out wide. The Rabbitohs now enjoying an eight-point buffer. The Rabbitohs continued to apply pressure, with long-range breaks from Chris McQueen, as well as a failed attempt by Nathan Merritt to ground the ball in-goal from a kick, saw the Roosters placed firmly on the back foot. But the men in red and green failed to convert the opportunities into points immediately. But with five minutes remaining, a Rabbitohs bomb toward the in-goal allowed Bryson Goodwin to swoop and take the ball and the game right in front of the sticks. Reynolds made no mistake with the conversion attempt to make the score 22-8. Greg Inglis wasn’t done yet though, with the Kangaroo representative grabbing another four-pointer with just under a minute of the match remaining. Reynolds converted to finish the night with six goals from six attempts, helping his side to the first two competition points of the year.

Judiciary News
Ben Teo was placed on report for shoulder charge during the match. However after review by the Match Review Committee no charge was layed. Dylan Walker was later charged with a Grade 1 Tripping Charge which carries a 75 point charge. He has taken the early guilty plea which offers a 25% on the charge. This means he will not miss any matches but will now have 56 carry over points.
NYC Cup Round 1
5:45pm
WIN 34-32
Team was 1-17 with Leulani and Makoare-Boyce dropping off the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ NYC side has snatched victory from the Sydney Roosters in the last 30 seconds of the match, getting up by 34-32 in a thriller that went down to a touchline conversion from Irae Simone. With the side down by four points with less than a minute to go, the Rabbitohs sped the ball out to Alex Johnston who touched down for the try, setting up young Irae Simone with a pressure kick from the touchline for the win – Simone successful with the attempt. The Rabbitohs found themselves on the wrong end of a 10-0 score-line just eight minutes in.The Roosters were in after just five minutes with winger Nene MacDonald pouncing on a loose ball out wide. The Tricolours backed it up with a long range effort from Jack Goodsell. Jackson Hastings converted the latter to take the lead 10-0. The red and greens hit back in fine style though, going halfback Wallace Tangiiti, who dived over from close range to narrow the margin. Irae Simone converted to make it 10-6 in the Roosters’ favour. Tangiiti was at it again at the 20 minute mark – crashing over from short range to level the scores up at close range. Simone converted again for the Rabbitohs to take the lead 12-10. With the first half winding down, the Roosters hit back through replacement Bradley Deitz, with Hastings again adding the extras to bring the score to 16-12 to round out the half. It took just four minutes after the break for the Rabbitohs to get back on the board. With the side in good field position, Captain Cameron McInnes took advantage of some lazy defence to scoot over from dummy-half right under the sticks. Irae Simone converted for the Rabbitohs to re-take the lead 18-16. Cheyne Whitelaw continued the Rabbitohs hard work, with the rampaging lock-forward crashing over after a solid run from the twenty metre line. Simone missed his conversion of the night to leave the score at 22-16 in the Rabbitohs’ favour. McInnes extended the lead with another four-pointer, Irae Simone adding the extras to extend Souths’ lead to 28-16 with just under 20 minutes left. But the Roosters weren’t quite done yet, with Nene MacDonald and Vincent Leuluai and Taane Milne crossing in quick succession to re-take the lead for the Chooks. Hastings converted two of the three tries to bring the score to a tantalisingly close 32-28 with six minutes left. Johnston added his last gasp try and Simone’s pressure kick sealed the match.

NSW Cup Round 1
v Wyong, Kanw Sat Mar 8 5:00pm
WIN 34-6
Late changes, Reddy replaced Evans at center. Turner started second row with Williams reverting to the bench. Toole dropped off the bench. The North Sydney Bears kicked off the new season with a resounding 34-6 victory over their northern neighbours Wyong in an often scrappy affair at the Morry Breen Field. The home side began the contest full of running and despite falling behind had managed to stay in touch with Wayne Lambkin’s grizzlies up until the hour mark. As the late afternoon shadows lengthened however the Wyong resolve grew weary and the Bears were able to cross for four unanswered tries in the final 17 minutes. The Roos were boosted by the late inclusion of their dynamic dummy half and skipper Mitch Williams and the opening handful of minutes were dominated by green and gold endeavour. Magnus Stromquist went within a bee’s breathe of touching down for Wyong as he bustled his way toward the up rights but the well drilled Norths defence held firm. And then, having weathered the early storm, the Bears did some attacking of their own and crossed for the game’s opening try on the quarter hour when a crisply delivered inside ball from Canberra recruit Jordan Worboys found the fast moving Kane Morgan who speared into the open before drawing and passing to Joel Reddy for the try. Norths were in again four minutes later when Kirisome Auva’a raced over after a left side rush and in the twinkling of an eye the early Wyong vim appeared to have drained away. To their credit however the Central Coast men hung tough and got quickly back into the arm wrestle. They were rewarded seven minutes before the break when big Inoke Vunipola speared in under the southern sticks and with former Bear, Darren ‘Dezzie’ Nicholls adding the extras it was 10-6 to the visitors. Wyong went oh so close to levelling up in the final minutes of the half when rangy winger Kyle MacGregor dived for the Leagues Club corner but was crashed over the sideline by desperate last line defence. And then to rub salt into Wyong’s near miss, the Bears marched up field to nab a try of their own with just 25 seconds on the clock. Matt Hyland, Jordan Worboys, Jesse Roberts and Joel Reddy combined to put Italian International Chris Centrone into the right corner and the Red and Black’s took a healthy 14-6 advantage into oranges. Sadly for the VB NSW Cup fans in attendance, the first twenty minutes of the second half was a period littered by handling mistakes and dumb penalties, the later born largely out of frustration. Big Curtis Johnston upped the ante in the 52nd minute pushing Norths lead out to twelve when he finished off a quick hands spread to the left. And with converted hooker Apisai Koroisau controlling the left side of the ruck like a seasoned number seven, the Bears continued to fling the pill wide, attacking with great success down the eastern edge. Further tries to Auva’a (63rd & 71st minutes) and Kane Morgan (76th minute) rounded out the scoring as the Bears racked up seven backline tries for the afternoon.
