WIN 18-2
South Sydney grabbed their third win of the season tonight against the Penrith Panthers by 18-2, with Nathan Merritt celebrating with his Club-record 145th try. Merritt broke two milestones on the night, firstly surpassing Bob McCarthy’s 211 first grade game record (broken last week by John Sutton, while Sutton extended his tally to 213), but also breaking an 81 year try-scoring record held by another Club legend in the form of legendary Test winger, Benny Wearing. Merritt is now the most prolific Rabbitohs try-scorer in the Club’s history. Mere minutes before kick-off, the heavens opened up with a torrential down-pour to completely change the dynamic of the game. But while ball-handling was compromised by the conditions, the Rabbitohs’ defence was not – managing to make only a handful of missed tackles during the entirety of the match. After some promising attacking play from the Panthers in the opening minutes, two penalties to the Rabbitohs allowed them to charge up-field, with Reynolds opting to kick for goal on the second occasion to give Souths a two nil lead. A Panthers bomb was split by Bryson Goodwin on the 10 metre line, allowing the Panthers an opportunity to post their first points of the game in the slippery conditions. But the Rabbitohs managed to repel four repeat sets on the back of the mistake with some great scramble defence. But the pressure wasn’t over for the red and greens, with a number of mistakes on their own line giving the Panthers more opportunity to score within 20 metres of the line. But the defence held strong in the trying weather conditions. The Panthers continued to throw everything at the Rabbitohs despite the rock-solid defensive effort, but with their attack providing nothing in the way of points, a penalty within kicking distance posed the perfect opportunity for Jamie Soward to kick a penalty-goal to level things up going into the break. On the resumption, it didn’t take long for debutant centre Kirsome Auva’a to grab a four-pointer on debut out wide. But as special as Auva’a’s try was, the next one had a touch of history, with Nathan Merritt finally breaking through for a four-pointer to break the Club’s all-time try-scoring record with 145 tries. Adam Reynolds converted from the touch-line to make it 12-2 in the Rabbitohs’ favour. The Rabbitohs defence continued to hold strong until the 63rd minute of the match – amazingly, it was at this point that the red and greens missed their first tackle of the match. The men in red and green looked to score again with just under 10 minutes in the game remaining, with another recent debutant in the form of back-rower Kyle Turner crossing the line for the first time in his career to extend Souths’ lead, but not before going upstairs to the video referee – a possible off-side nearly robbing the young Rabbitoh of the four-pointer. Adam Reynolds converted to make it 18-2 to finish the game.

NYC Cup Round 6

LOSS 10-26
Late Changes Late Changes Kavangh out Brad Wall starts at hooker and Garlick on the bench The Rabbitohs’ under 20’s side have gone down to the Penrith Panthers in round six of the NYC Premiership by 26-10. The night didn’t start well for the red and greens, at one stage trailing the home-side by 22 points in the first half. It didn’t take long for first points to be scored, with Brendan Attwood crossing right next to the sticks inside the first couple of minutes of the match. Bryce Cartwright converted to give the Panthers an early six point lead. A final tackle, short-side play from the Panthers yielded their second of the evening, this time Cartwright bagging the four-pointer himself to make it 10-0 half-way through the first period. Despite two promising attacking raids on the Penrith line, the Rabbitohs came up short on both occasions, with poor ball-handling undoing the good lead-up work. With six minutes in the first half remaining, the Panthers mounted another attacking raid on the Rabbitohs line with winger Joshua Jay finishing off a movement to cross in the corner before Cartwright grabbed his second of the evening in similar fashion. Corey Harawira converted on both occasions to make it 22-0 in the home-sides favour going into the sheds. It took 65 minutes for the Rabbitohs to finally get on the board, with winger Sam Young breaking the Panthers’ defence for the first time to cross right next to the sticks. Irae Simone converted to make it 22-6. The red and greens continued to attack the Panthers line, but again it was ball-control that undid Souths’ effort on a number of occasions before a rampaging Tulsa Saumamao raced 30 metres – taking Panthers along for the ride – to score out wide to bring the score to a more respectable 22-10. With the Panthers yet to score in the second half, the Rabbitohs had all the momentum, but Penrith’s Brendan Attwood had other ideas, racing over for his second try of the evening to make it 26-10 to round out the match.

NSW Cup Round 6
v Wyong, NSO Sun Apr 12 3:00pm
L0SS 12-22
Late changes Morgan, Auva'a, Low and Williams were out. A.Johnston started at fullback, Evans at center, Aldridge at hooker, Hyland at prop, Picker at second row, Lowe at lock. South Areaiiti Roberts dropped back to the bench. Even the assistance of Souths Lote Tuqiri wasn’t enough to help North Sydney over the line against the Wyong Roos, in the Bears first VB NSW Cup home match of the season on Saturday. The 11th placed Bears went down 22-12 to the eighth placed Roos, with Brad Lupi and Alex Johnston the tryscorers for the red and black. Kurt Aldridge added four points with his two goals, but it wasn’t enough for the victory over a strong Wyong outfit. Wyong led 12-6 at half-time and, despite some close play, it was the visitors who were first to cross in the second-half, pushing the score out to an 18-6 advantage. With five to go the Bears were still fighting, and closed the gap to 18-12, but a 60m runaway effort to the Roos left the home side with little to cheer about. There were plenty of familiar faces at North Sydney Oval for the match, with a good contingent of the Roos having pulled on the red-and-black at some stage in their careers. Mark O’Meley, Darren Nicholls, Brock Molan, Shaune Corrigan and Jay Florimo are all ex-Bears, but they weren't feeling any nostalgia on Saturday. Nicholls crossed twice against his old club, with his new team mates Dale Clacherty and Sam Bernstrom also scoring four-pointers. But it was Nicholls who made sure that his side left Bear Park as winners, kicking three goals to put the game to bed at 22-12. The Bears have had a slow start to the season, winning just one from five. After the opening 34-6 win against the Roos, and a bye in round two, Norths have struggled for form and cohesion.
Curtis Johnston was charged with a Grade 1 dangerous throw, and later in the game also charged with a Grade 2 striking charge. He has taken the early guilty plea for both and will miss 2 games with 61 carry over points.
