LOSS 14-27
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down 27-14 to the Melbourne Storm in the inaugural Crown Resorts OCRF Charity Challenge at ANZ Stadium tonight (Friday) in front of 18,508 Members and supporters. Despite a gallant second-half effort from the Rabbitohs, an intense performance from the Storm proved too much for the red and greens. After just 30 seconds, a Ryan Hinchcliffe tackle on George Burgess saw the Englishman spill the ball on his own line giving the visitors first crack at the Rabbitohs. The Rabbitohs managed to diffuse the Storm’s first set, but the Storm managed to force a line drop-out. The Storm made no mistake with their second attempt though when Cooper Cronk linked up with Billy Slater to open the scoring. Cameron Smith converted to give Melbourne an early 6-0 lead after just four minutes. Melbourne continued to dominate in the early exchanges, pressing the South Sydney line with their enthusiastic attack. But while the Rabbitohs would hold the Storm out, a penalty right in front of the sticks allowed Cameron Smith to boot the visitors two points further ahead. A string of handling errors put the Storm back within striking distance with 15 minutes of the half remaining, with Cooper Cronk eventually burrowing under the Rabbitohs defence to score 10 metres in from touch. Cameron Smith converted to make 14-0. To compound Souths’ problems, Billy Slater took the kick-off with one foot in the in-goal and one over the dead-ball line, putting the Storm in perfect attacking position again. Kevin Proctor blew an opportunity for the Storm with the line wide open, but mercifully dropped the ball, releasing the pressure valve momentarily for the red and greens. A rare mistake from the Storm inside their own half finally gave Souths a chance, and this time they made the most of it. Dylan Walker drew the Melbourne defence in before passing on to Alex Johnston who crossed for his third try in three games. Adam Reynolds’ attempted conversion was waved away leaving the Storm with a ten-point advantage. With two seconds left in the first half, Sisa Waqa finished off a Storm back-line movement to slide over in the corner. Cameron Smith converted millimetres in from touch to make the half-time score 20-4. The second half didn’t start well for the Rabbitohs, with centre Kirisome Auva’a briefly taken from the field after copping the hip of teammate Greg Inglis in the head as the two attempted to diffuse a kick. Auva’a’s departure left the Rabbitohs with only two players on the bench for a time after Kyle Turner was earlier taken from the field with a concussion. But despite the string of challenges, things were about to change. John Sutton came up with the play the Rabbitohs needed – breaking through the Storm line before passing onto Reynolds who raced the remaining 20 metres to touch down under the black dot. Reynolds converted his own try to make it 20-10. The Rabbitohs began to build momentum and on the back of a penalty for a strip right on the line, it was the Walker and Johnston combination again doing damage on the right edge – Walker flicking the ball back inside to Johnston who crashed over for his second of the night. Reynolds’ conversion attempt hit the upright and was waved away, leaving the score at 20-14 in Melbourne’s favour. The Melbourne Storm were next to score though when Billy Slater sliced through and dummied before racing 20 metres to score. Smith added the extras to make it 24-14 in the Storm’s favour. With the clock winding down, Cronk snapped a field-goal to make it 27-14. The Rabbitohs put in a short kick-off that saw George Burgess regather and surge up towards the Storm 10 metre line, only to lose the ball in the tackle.

NYC Cup Round 10
5:20pm
WIN 24-14
Late Changes Souths were 1-17 with Cottrell dropping off the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side has defeated the Melbourne Storm in emphatic fashion by 36-8 at ANZ Stadium tonight (Friday). The Rabbitohs enjoyed a 26-0 lead at half-time, out-playing their higher ranked opponents in all facets of the game. It took 13 minutes for the teams to draw first blood, but when they did, it was in style. Tom Hughes took a Storm kick on his own try-line before proceeding to run the length of the field, bumping off three defenders in the process to score out wide. Irae Simone converted to give the Rabbitohs an early 6-0 lead. The Rabbitohs backed up the effort just two minutes later off the ensuing set when a John Olive break saw the centre draw and pass back on the inside to a flying Aaron Gray – Gray running the remaining 20 metres to score adjacent to the posts. Simone added the extras for the Storm to find themselves down 12-0. It seemed to be raining tries for the Rabbitohs, when Tom Hughes pounced on a kick into the Storm in-goal to grab a double. Simone made no mistake with the conversion to make it 18-0. Nine minutes from the break, front-rower Jack Gosiewski powered over in the far corner to extend the Rabbitohs’ lead capping off some enthusiastic attack. Simone again added the extras to make it 24-0 – a penalty-goal right on half-time making it 26-0. On the resumption, it took 10 minutes before Eden Syme crashed over again to extend the Rabbitohs’ lead to 32 points with Simone’s conversion. The Storm blew opportunities close to the Rabbitohs line on a number of occasions, releasing the pressure valve from Souths before firmly parking themselves within the Storm’s side of half-way. Ten minutes before full-time, the Melbourne side finally got on the board through Suliasi Vunivalu who raced over in the corner to make it 32-4. Minutes later, the Storm’s Junior Kirisome nearly notched up another four-points for the visitors in the opposite corner, only to be denied by some strong Rabbitohs defence. The Rabbitohs found themselves down a man when hooker Aaron Booth was sin-binned, and with the Souths defensive line stretched, the Storm went in again through Nelson Asofa-Solomona. But the Rabbitohs weren’t done, when winger Sam Young raced over just inside the touch-line to score an impressive try. Simone missed his first conversion of the night leaving the score at 36-8 in favour of the Rabbitohs to round out the match.

NSW Cup Round 11
v Newcastle, NSO Sun May 18 3:00pm
WIN 18-12
Late changes Uluibau, Lupi and South were out. Reddy started center, Hyland hooker, Picker second row, Lowe lock with J.Garlick and Roberts starting on the bench. The North Sydney Bears have gotten back in the winners’ circle in round 10, defeating the seventh-placed Newcastle Knights by 18-12 at North Sydney Oval – Nathan Merritt playing an integral role for the red and black’s. Merritt crossed for a four-pointer and set one up for Curtis Johnston in a solid performance from fullback to help the Bears to their first victory since round one. The sides traded blows in the opening exchanges with superb defence denying both teams on numerous occasions. A wayward kick by the Bears attacking the Newcastle line eventually allowed Joel Reddy to open the scoring, giving them an early 4-0 lead. The Knights hit back though on the back of a huge weight of possession with Brenton Horwood diving over under the sticks to level the scores up with four minutes left in the first half. Josh Mantellato converted from in front to make it 6-4 in the visitos’ favour going into the sheds. On the resumption, Nathan Merritt finished off a determined attacking play from the Bears to score out wide for the Bears to regain the lead at 8-6. Merritt began to take control for the Bears when he injected himself from the back before throwing a long cut-out pass to Curtis Johnston to score in his 100th career game for the Bears. Kurt Aldridge missed his third conversion attempt of the afternoon leaving the score at 12-6. The Knights hit back straight away through Tyler Randall who scored adjacent to the sticks with 22 minutes in the match remaining. Mantellato slotted the conversion to equal the scores at 12 apiece. In the final 20 minutes each side had opportunities to take the game, however penalties and errors kept costing both sides as frustrations became evident on the field. With ten minutes left in the match and pressure mounting, the Bears mounted a promising attacking raid that saw a short-pass to Joe Picker send the forward over for a much-needed try under the posts. Kurt Aldridge knocked over his first conversion of the afternoon to make it 18-12. North Sydney survived late attacks from the Knights to hold on for an 18-12 victory, the Bears’ first victory since round one. Tom Burgess led the way from the front for the Bears with his strong running laying the foundations, while Joel Reddy and Nathan Merritt were lively in attack.
Mark O'Dare has been charged with a Grade 1 Dangerous Throw. He has taken the early guilty plea and will not miss any games but has 93 carry over points.
