WIN 34-18
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have claimed second position on the NRL ladder after defeating the Canberra Raiders by 34-18 in Canberra. Despite being just four points behind the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles on the NRL ladder, the Rabbitohs consolidated their ranking with the win, by now boasting the best attack and defence in the NRL (421 points for, with only 273 against). Two penalties to the Raiders inside the first minute of play carried the home-side up-field, with Jarrod Croker taking the second opportunity to boot his side two points ahead after just two minutes. But the men in red and green would punish the Raiders almost immediately, when a Greg Inglis wrap-around close to the Raiders’ line saw Dylan Walker eventually power over Croker on his way to the try-line in the far corner – the four-pointer putting Walker on an equal nine tries with Alex Johnston for the season. Reynolds missed the conversion attempt leaving the score at 4-2. Johnston wouldn’t have it though, with Adam Reynolds taking the opportunity to chip the ball to the un-marked Souths Juniors’ winger, who planted the ball down in the same spot as Walker. Reynolds found the GIO Stadium upright to leave it at 8-2. The Raiders nearly grabbed a four-pointer half-way through the first stanza, when Josh McCrone kicked across the face of goal-line to Alex Johnston’s wing who failed to cleanly diffuse the kick. A contest ensued in the in-goal, but the Raiders came up empty handed. Souths continued to apply pressure to the Raiders close to their line, with Sami Suiluma dropping an Adam Reynolds kick in the corner on the last tackle to gift the visitors another set. The Rabbitohs took advantage immediately through Bryson Goodwin, who finished a back-line movement to make it 12-2. Reynolds missed his third conversion attempt from the sideline to take the sides to the sheds. After the break, Walker and Johnston combined to produce one of the best efforts of the season, when Walker grubbered through the ball on the short-side into the in-goal. Anthony Milford misread the kick and instead of booting it out into safety for the Raiders, allowed Johnston to plant the ball down just millimetres inside the dead-ball line in brilliant fashion. The video referee awarded the try to make it 16-2, before Reynolds’ horror night with the boot continued from the touch-line. Canberra hit back by scoring their first try of the night through Sami Sauiluma – the winger doing well to plant the ball down before being bundled over the touch-line to make it 16-6. It was the Raiders’ turn to put pressure on the Rabbits, with the men in green nearly claiming another try through Sauiluma. But it was Souths who would score, when Dylan Walker created an opportunity yet again – Johnston taking a flick pass from Walker before drawing the Canberra fullback and passing on to a flying Adam Reynolds to score under the posts. Reynolds converted his first of the night to make it 22-6. But Souths weren’t done, backing up the try with another on the very next set, this time through Bryson Goodwin – the centre scoring a Gearin-like try off the boot of Luke Keary. Reynolds added the extras to make it 28-6 with 12 minutes remaining. The floodgates began to open for the Rabbitohs when Adam Reynolds crossed for his second of the night before converting. Two quick tries to Jarrod Croker and Anthony Milford for the Raiders weren’t enough for the home-side, the match finishing 34-18.

Rabbitohs back-rower, Ben Te’o was placed on report and has subsequently been charged with a grade one dangerous throw after an incident in the 57th minute of last night’s victory. The charge has a base penalty of 125 points, however with 3 non similar prior offences loading the charge is 200 points. Ben has taken the early guilty plea which means it is discounted to 150 points, meaning he would miss one match.

Two late tries to the Rabbitohs was enough to bring the men in red and green back from the brink in a chilly Canberra tonight (Monday) – the Rabbitohs coming away with a 22-18 victory in the nation's capital. The Rabbitohs missed two opportunities to post first points in the match on the back of repeat sets on the Raiders line. But it was Canberra who open the point-scoring account for the evening when centre Ricky Garard finished off a break to streak the remaining 20 metres to give the home-side an early four-point lead. A penalty to the Rabbitohs 10 minutes later allowed them to march up-field before fullback Jordie Hedges grabbed a four-pointer of his own adjacent to the sticks. Wallace Tangiiti converted to give Souths a 6-4 lead. But the Raiders hit back immediately through back-rower Scott Doyle. A second missed conversion attempt from the try-scorer left the Raiders leading 8-6. Souths wouldn't be outdone though, with the side playing hot potato close to the green machine's line. The adventurous play resulted in centre John Olive racing over out wide to reclaim the lead at 10-8 to take the teams to the sheds. On the resumption, Garard grabbed his second of the night when he crashed over from dummy half, with Scott Doyle's conversion making it 14-10 in the home-side's favour. It wasn't long before winger Lachlan Hurst would extend Canberra's lead when he raced over in the corner to make it 18-10 with just over 20 minutes in the match remaining. But two tries in quick succession to Tom Hughes and Captain Cameron McInnes brought the red and green's back from the brink with six minutes in the match remaining. Conversions to Tangiiti and Makoare-Boyce made it 22-18 to round out the match.

After a mixed month of footy, the Wests Tigers have found themselves back in the winning circle after defeating the North Sydney Bears 30-22 at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday. Despite a strengthened Bears side that included the return of many Rabbitohs players, the opening 15 minutes of the game was shaky by the visitors. The Tigers were gifted opportunities on the Bears' line and eventually capitalised through, John Sila, who opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a bulldozing run close to the line. The conversion attempt from the sideline was waved away leaving the score at 4-0 to the Tigers. The Bears were next to post points however, through a spectacular putdown by Curtis Johnston only four minutes later. An equally impressive conversion from the sideline by Apisai Koroisau, gave the Bears a two-point lead at 6-4. A costly offside penalty on last tackle marched the Tigers upfield and closer to their second try. A well-waited cross field kick was caught and planted down by John Sila, who bagged himself a first-half double 28 minutes in. The seesawing affair at the end of the first half continued, through Joe Uluibau, who received a good short ball from Koroisau five metres out from the line. The pass combined with late footwork proved too much for the Tigers' edge defenders, whose lapse in concentration cost them the lead on the stroke of half-time. The Tigers came out of the break energised however, posting the first points of the second half through Jarred Farlow in the 47th minute. Farlow got a hand to a Stevens grubber which looked to be going dead-in-goal, highlighting the importance of not giving up on the play. Johnston raced over in the corner five minutes later for yet another double, the last pass again coming from Koriosau. With the scores locked up at 14 apiece, another sideline conversion from Koroisau brought the Bears back in the lead at 16-14. Back-to-back penalties to the Tigers resulted in a try to front rower, Jack Buchanan in the 58th minute, whose awareness from a quick-tap close to the line got the Tigers in front. A three-minute double to Tigers winger, Setefano Taukafa, blew out their lead to 14 points after two inspiring runs down the far sideline. A positional change saw Bears five eighth, Jordan Worboys, move to fullback where he picked up the last try of the match in the 78th minute. The conversion attempt was successful from Koroisau, leaving the final score at 30-22 and the Bears with their ninth straight loss.
