LOSS 12-30
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the North Queensland Cowboys by 30-12 in Monday Night Football after leading 12-4 at half-time at ANZ Stadium. Playing without the likes of Adam Reynolds, Dylan Walker and John Sutton, the re-shuffled Rabbitohs looked promising in the early stages of the clash, with the new halves pairing of Glenn Stewart and Luke Keary orchestrating play fluently, while the forwards ran with intent. But the night ultimately belonged to North Queensland in front of the crowd of 13,866. Some brilliant running from the Rabbitohs forwards coupled with a penalty saw the side march 100 metres inside the first two minutes of the match, and eventually resulted in Dave Tyrrell scoring his sixth career try in what was a barnstorming opening to the Round 6 clash. Issac Luke converted from next to the sticks to make it 6-0 in favour of the red and greens. The Cowboys hit back inside the first 10 minutes though when two consecutive penalties gifted the visitors field position, before Johnathan Thurston kicked for the wing of Justin O’Neil who took the ball in the air to score in the corner. Thurston’s conversion attempt was waves away to leave the Rabbitohs in front 6-4. An Issac Luke intercept would be the catalyst for the side’s next points, with the hooker being mowed down on the 20 metre line. From the next tackle, Stewart combined with Inglis down the short side, before Inglis sent a bullet-like cut-out pass to Johnston on the wing to score. Luke slotted a booming conversion from the touch-line to make it 12-4. The Cowboys went back on the attack through a dangerous-looking right side combination that had the Rabbitohs at sixes and sevens. With the visitors looking certain to score, Joel Reddy pulled off an important try-saver right over the line to keep the score-board stagnant. A penalty to North Queensland on the last tackle kept Souths under pressure for another set of six though, but the red and green line managed to hold strong. Ill-discipline was costing both sides field position, but Inglis was about to give the Cowboys a scare when the skipper went from dummy-half just a metre from the line. Match officials sent the try to the video referee, and eventually ruled against the try judging that Inglis had lost control of the ball. The Cowboys would have a four-pointer of their own denied on the stroke of half-time though for an obstruction – the sides going to the sheds with Souths leading 12-4. The second half started poorly for the Rabbitohs when Cowboy Gavin Cooper sliced through the line before passing on to Thurston who raced in under the sticks in the very first set. Thurston converted his own try to make it 12-10. Not long afterwards, a penalty to the Cowboys 26 metres out saw Thurston opt to take the kick – the Test half making no mistake to equalise. A promising attacking raid from Souths saw a Luke Keary kick diffused by the Cowboys on the last tackle, but replays showed that a flying Reddy was intentionally taken out in back-play as he fought to contest for the ball. No penalty was given, and the Cowboys were about to benefit. Antonio Winterstein doubled North Queensland’s luck after some brilliant back-line support play saw the ball go through a number of hands before crossing the stripe. Thurston added the extras millimetres in from touch to give the Cowboys an 18-12 lead. The Cowboys were in again with eight minutes left when Thurston grabbed his second of the night by finishing off a break before adding the extras to make it 24-12. But it didn’t stop there, with Cowboys hooker Jake Granville racing some 60 metres from dummy-half to seal the match. Thurston was on song again with the boot to make the final score 30-12.

The Rabbitohs’ NYC side has gone down to the visiting North Queensland Cowboys at ANZ Stadium this evening (Monday) by 38-24 in a see-sawing affair. The Rabbitohs went on the attack immediately when they surprised the Cowboys with a short kick-off that was retrieved on the 30 metre line. The visitors scrambled to diffuse the raid and managed to do so when a penalty was given to the red and greens for an obstruction. Mere minutes later, Aaron Booth broke the line before drawing the fullback and sending Liam Coleman over for a well-orchestrated four-pointer. Jordie Hedges converted to give the home side an early six-nil lead. The dummy-halves were making an impression with next points coming though Cowboys rake, Brandon Smith from close-range. Coan Hess converted from right next to the sticks before the Cows went in again shortly afterwards through front-rower, Viliame Kikau. Hess made no mistake from a similar position to his first to take the lead at 12-6. Cowboys late inclusion, Sam Smith, was next to add his name to the score-card when he tip-toed his way down the touch-line before diving over to extend North Queensland’s lead at 16-16. The Rabbitohs hit back when Haimona Hiroti turned the Cowboys’ defence inside out before crossing out wide. Hedges nailed the conversion to narrow the gap at 16-12. Just before half-time, Cowboys fullback Yamba Bowie took a beautifully timed ball to race through to make it 20-12 going into the sheds. On the resumption, Rabbitohs forward Dominic Timoteo – playing in just his second game for the Club – crashed over for a four-pointer to narrow the gap with Hedges’ conversion. But the Cowboys would have none of it, hitting back almost immediately through five-eighth Ty Carucci. Hess converted to make it 26-18. The match continued to see-saw, and the spark would again come from dummy-half – Aaron Booth picking up a try of his own after setting one up in the first half. Hedges added the extras to make it 21-6. But Sam Smith would grab his second of the night moments later when the winger crashed over out wide to make it 30-24. North Queensland continued to apply pressure to the red and greens with wave after wave of attack eventually resulting in winger Gideon Mosby grabbing a try out wide completely unmarked to make it 34-24. With five minutes remaining, Yamba Bowie grabbed his second of the match to seal victory for the visitors with the score reading 38-24.

The North Sydney Bears finally returned back to the ever popular North Sydney Oval for their first official home game of the season. Unfortunately the woes continued for the side who fell victim to a scintillating Newtown Jets attack, going down 40-18 on Sunday afternoon. North Sydney were left lamenting the early loss of fullback Setefano Taukafa who went down with an ankle injury. He was replaced by John Olive who shifted from the flanks and enjoyed a solid game. The Bears eventually succumbed to considerable pressure from the Jets, with first points coming from Nathan Gardner. A further two tries from Dallas Wells saw the Jets take a 16-0 lead to the sheds come half time, despite a John Olive chip which came close to providing points. Had Wells not stepped out during an inspired gallop up the field, the scoreline could have proven far more damning at the 40 minute mark. The second half commenced in much the same fashion as the start of the game, with some tired Bears legs providing a hole for Jets big man Junior Roqica who found the try line early. Todd Murphy would add points of his own after a delightful dummy put him through for his first try of the match and the Jets up a dire 28-0.The tide temporarily turned in the form of North Sydney notching 2 tries within 5 minutes, providing faint hope of an unlikely comeback. This hope was soon stamped out after some fancy hands from Jason Bukuya put Mitch Brown in the scorers list. Another try from Todd Murphy and a last ditch effort from Bears front rower Michael Ross meant the match finished at a score of 40-18 in what was a high scoring affair. The loss leaves the Bears sitting at the bottom of the ladder, which they will be hoping to move themselves off when they host the Wyong Roos this Sunday at North Sydney Oval.
