LOSS 10-18

In a match played in torrid conditions, the South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in Round 7 by 18-10 in front of a crowd of 3,978 at Remondis Stadium. With a gale-force wind of about 80km/h firmly behind them, the Sharks attacked the Rabbitohs’ line with little regard for the conditions – throwing the ball out the back-line before landing in the hands of Michael Gordon who opened the scoring for the home side. A bizarre chain of events then saw the Rabbitohs turn a desperate final tackle option back into attack as Luke Keary knocked the ball backwards before Dylan Walker recovered by hoisting a dangerous mid-field bomb that was in-turn left to bounce by the Sharks. The Rabbitohs got the ball back and attacked again, but the side was unable to turn the opportunity into points. The Sharks backed up their earlier effort when a Michael Ennis grubber from close range landed in the arms of Luke Lewis in the in-goal to score. Gordon added the extras to take the score to 10-0. With nine minutes left in the opening stanza, the men in red and green attacked the Sharks’ short-side and finally came up with points – Alex Johnston finishing off what seemed to be a dry-weather back-line movement to score out wide. Issac Luke’s conversion attempt was off target in the wind, leaving the score at 10-4. The huge ensuing kick-off saw a knock on from the Rabbitohs in-goal, gifting the Sharks possession deep in the half. But despite the opportunity, Maguire’s men held strong – the sides going to the break with the Sharks leading 10-4. On the resumption, a Greg Inglis kick into the in-goal gifted the Rabbitohs a repeat set that would allow both Burgess brothers the chance to shine. Thomas Burgess put on a monster palm on a Sharks player to come within a whisker of scoring, before George looked to score from the very next play. But the video referee disallowed the try owing to a double-movement. The Sharks would be next to register points though when a penalty within kicking distance allowed Valentine Holmes the chance to grab two points to make it 12-4. But from the kick-off, it was Cronulla’s turn to drop the ball in the in-goal through Jack Bird – the Rabbitohs immediately going on the attack 10 metres from the Sharks line. Luke Keary then seized an opportunity by selling a dummy before kicking for a flying Chris McQueen to score adjacent to the posts. Issac Luke converted to narrow the gap to two points at 12-10. McQueen almost grabbed his second mere minutes later, but the video referees found a knock-on earlier in the play to deprive the red and greens of the lead. The two sides continued to rip into each other with wave after wave of attacking raids being stopped by pulverising defence. But the Sharks would again go on the front foot when Jayson Bukuya took a ricochet off Greg Inglis in the in-goal to grab a four-pointer. Holmes added the extras to make the final score 18-10.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 7

v Cronulla-Sutherland, 4:45pm

LOSS 22-26

Late Changes Besgrove is out. Suamamoa starts second row, Coleman lock, Syme and Preece on the bench.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the NYC in trying conditions by 26-22 in the Shire. Wind and rain were the order of the evening, with both teams defying the conditions to put on a solid performance. With a howling gale behind them, the Sharks charged up-field and came up with first points through back-rower Anthony Moraitis, who crashed over to open the scoring. After battling the wind on three occasions to get the ball to stay on the tee, Jamayne Isaako converted from virtually right in front to give the home-side a 6-0 lead. Levi Sopi added another four points to the Sharks’ tally shortly afterwards after taking a grubber-kick in the in-goal to score un-marked making it 10-0. After receiving a goal-line drop-out, the Rabbitohs made the most of their opportunities with Aaron Booth powering his way under the sticks. With the assistance of another Rabbitoh holding the ball, Jordie Hedges converted to make it 10-6 with 12 minutes left in the half. But the Sharks would hit back five minutes from the break through halfback Jayden Brailey, who crossed under the sticks before Isaako again added the extras to make it 16-6 going into the break. On the resumption, the Rabbitohs went straight on the attack, and with the aid of the wind now behind them, the men in red and green marched up-field to finally see Liam Coleman score under the sticks. Hedges added the extras to make it 16-12. But the Sharks would respond immediately with Sopi grabbing his second of the evening after racing down the touch-line to make it 20-12. Conditions began to deteriorate further with rain worsening visibility and the wind picking up. But Irae Simone didn’t seem to mind, with the centre racing over to return serve for the Rabbitohs. Hedges came close with his conversion attempt from the side-line, but a gust of wind sent the kick awry. Damon Goolagong then added his name to the Rabbitohs’ score-card when he raced down the touch-line to score an important try. Hedges converted a booming conversion from touch to take the lead at 22-20. But the lead was short-lived as Semisi Vea ran through the middle of the Rabbits’ defence before racing 60 metres to score. Isaako converted to make it 26-22 with seven minutes left on the clock.

v Wyong, North Sydney Oval Sun Apr 19 3:00pm

WIN 32-4

Late Changes - Wall, Neale, Sorenson were out, Georgious started fullback, C.Walker five-eighth, Sione and Muala prop, J.Roberts lock, Chang and Evan Lee on the bench.

The North Sydney Bears tore the Wyong Roos apart in a 32-4 upset under new coach Ben Gardiner and a new halves combination. The Roos came into the match with a fantastic defensive record conceding less than 16 points per game for the season, while the Bears had only managed one win for the year and were sitting on the bottom of the ladder. Halves pairing Cody Walker and Darren Nicholls took complete control of the entire 80 minutes and provided a much-needed spark in the Bears attack. Captain Matt Hyland was also very strong out of dummy half. It was a defence orientated first half, though the halftime score of 6-0 did not highlight the dominance shown by the Bears outfit. The Roos were their own worst enemy in the first half, continually making errors while in attack and gifting the Bears field position. Nicholls dominated the first half with his creativity and vision that was highlighted in his role in the opening try when he put in a chip kick behind the Roos defence for John Olive to catch and score. It was a smart play by the new halfback and he converted the try to make it 6-0 after 10 minutes. Nicholls was not only outstanding in attack but in the 20th minute he saved a certain try with an excellent tackle on his own line. Just four minutes later, he forced a mid-field error with some solid contact on a Roos ball carrier. The rest of the half was fast paced, but there were no more tries. Bears prop Jesse Roberts scored just eight minutes into the second half after a good run by Walker. Nicholls converted to extend the lead to 12-0. Sam Manuleleua showed his magic in the 51st minute when he took a spectacular catch on his own line and made a 50-metre dash. He then scored just a few tackles later thanks to a nice right-to-left backline shift off the back of his previous run. Nicholls missed the conversion attempt and it was 16-0. Less than five minutes later the Bears were on the attack again, and Olive scored his second try of the day after a classy string of passes to make it 22-0 after the Nicholls conversion. The Roos finally got on
