WIN 14-13
The Rabbitohs have gotten their 2016 Nines campaign underway in thrilling fashion at Eden Park this morning (Saturday), defying the run of play to claim a one-point victory over arch-rivals, the Sydney Roosters. A total of three Rabbitohs tries plus a dead-lock breaking conversion from Damien Cook in the dying seconds of the match was enough to claim victory for the red and greens. Bryson Goodwin got proceedings off to a thrilling start by slicing straight through the Roosters’ defensive line before streaking some 65 metres to put them into good field position. Souths were ultimately unable to capitalise on the opportunity. But a Roosters forward pass immediately off the restart saw Alex Johnston open the tournament’s score-sheet by hitting and spinning before dragging a Rooster over the line with him. Johnston’s conversion attempt was off the mark, leaving the score at 4-0 The Chooks hit back though when Jason Manu stepped through Souths’s line before passing on to a flying Latrell Mitchell who grabbed himself a bonus zone try (five points), and with the missed conversion, the Roosters led 5-4. Returning retiree, Braith Anasta, then got himself on the board from close-range when he stepped close to the line and barged over to make it 9-4 in favour of the tricolours. With some 20 seconds left in the first half, a turnover to Souths saw Kirisome Auva’a take advantage of an overlap out wide to score, taking the score at the break to 9-8 in favour of the Roosters. Two and a half minutes after the break, Jason Clark tried in vain to plant the ball over the line only to be obstructed by the uprights. But the Roosters made no mistake with their next opportunity when Tyler Cornish put in a perfectly-weighted long-range kick that sat up perfectly in the in-goal for Joe Burgess to score to make it 13-8. With the clock winding down, Michael Oldfield became an unlikely try-scorer when he chased down the ball in-goal before momentarily losing the ball from his sights when it disappeared between his legs. When the re-surfaced, Oldfield planted it down and with Cook’s conversion, managed to claim a brilliant victory against the run of play.

LOSS 12-18
Despite scoring three tries apiece, the Melbourne Storm managed to get on top of the Rabbitohs in their second clash of the 2016 Nines tournament – the boot of Cameron Munster proving the difference. Munster was in tournament-best form with the boot, slotting all three conversion attempts from all angles, while the Rabbitohs were unable to get the extras on all three occasions – a familiar occurrence for most teams on Day 1 of the tournament. After what seemed like an eternity in the abbreviated format of the game, Ken Bromwich opened the scoring for Melbourne in the third minute before a successful conversion to Munster sent the Storm ahead by 6-0. Nelson Asofa-Solomona was the next to score out wide for the Storm mere moments later, with Munster again making no mistake with the boot to make it 12-0. With the Rabbitohs under pressure to post points, a quick change in direction from dummy-half close to the line saw John Olive take a pass from Cody Walker to slide over just inside touch to open the Rabbitohs’ account for the match. Walker was unable to convert leaving the score at 12-4 heading into the break. On the resumption, some fluent lead-up work from Cody Walker and Damien Cook saw Hymel Hunt charge straight through the Storm markers to claim the side’s second try of the afternoon to narrow the gap to 12-8. The Storm looked likely to score another try not long afterwards, but were stopped over the line by some brilliant Rabbitohs defence that saw the men in red and green put hands under the ball as the Storm attempted to plant it down. But Storm playmaker, Blake Green, boosted the chances of his side when he kicked a booming forty-twenty that set up a try for Curtis Scott to make it 18-8. Damien Cook grabbed himself a consolation try for the Rabbitohs to make the final score 18-12 to round out Day for the men in red and green. They will now play the Parramatta Eels tomorrow morning.

LOSS 11-24
The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ 2016 Nines campaign has come to an end after going down to the Parramatta Eels by 24-11 at Eden Park this morning – the Eels advancing to the Quarter Finals along with the Melbourne Storm in the Waiheke Pool. A win or a draw would have seen the Rabbitohs advance to the next phase of the tournament, however it was the Eels who came up trumps on the back of some slick back-line movements resulting in tries. The Eels were in after just 30 seconds of play after the Parramatta side regathered their own kick-off before Semi Radradra slid in next to the corner-post. Corey Norman converted from the sideline to make it 6-0. From the ensuing set, John Sutton went for a forty-twenty in an attempt to put the Rabbitohs in prime attacking position, but the skipper got more than he bargained for from the effort – the ball staying in play only for Bryson Goodwin to scoop it up and score to make it 6-4. By the fourth minute, Luke Kelly was attacking the red and green line with gusto and eventually managed to send Norman over for four points to make it 10-4 in favour of the Parramatta side. The Rabbitohs looked to atone when Damien Cook looked to spark an opportunity when he got outside the widest Eels defender before streaking some 40 metres down the sideline and kicking. But while Cook’s kick was on-song and would have resulted in a certain try to Michael Oldfield, officials deemed that Cook had in fact stepped on the touch-line as defenders looked to take him out. Just before half-time, Bevan French chased a kick into the in-goal hard and came up trumps for the blue and gold’s with a fast four-pointer to round out the first half, leaving the score at 14-4. On the resumption, Cameron McInnes made his intentions clear when he powered over for a five-point try from dummy-half that narrowed the gap. With Cook’s conversion, the score read 14-11. Vai Afu Toutai got his team back in prime position though with a try in the corner which Mitch Cornish converted to make it 20-11 with time fast running out for the Red and Green’s. With the clock winding down, Radradra notched up his second try of the morning to seal the victory in the final minute of the clash to make the final score 24-11.

LOSS 8-20
A vastly extended Rabbitohs side was on hand at the Simply Energy High Performance Centre, Redfern Oval, on Friday night to take on an equally extensive Sydney Roosters line-up as the sides look to finalise the make-up of the respective squads. It would be the Roosters who would come away with the win scoring four tries to two, but it was all about getting the team's structures right according to Penna. "We had a good hit-out against the Roosters," said the mentor. "We played three 25 minute thirds – we started well and the boys put in a big effort. It's been a long 12 weeks (of) pre-season, so I think they were just pleased to get out there and start playing some footy." Souths started well and had a try early with some good passing starting from the half with a good try on the wing. Roosters played more of a power game and had the size in the forwards over Souths. Roosters got through Souths a few times for long range tries. Souths will need to be more organised, but it was a good first hit out for the team. With lots of players vying for selection.

LOSS 4-8
The North Sydney Bears had their first hitout of the year last weekend when they took on the Newtown Jets in a trial match. While the result did not go the Bears’ way – they were defeated 8-4 – coach Ben Gardiner said the scoreline was not being used to measure the success of the game. Instead, the focus was squarely on how individual players fared to help decide the starting side for round one, with different combinations tested. “We had one team on for the first half and then we changed and had another team on for the second half,” Gardiner said. The Bears, however, did have the upper hand early on, scoring the first points of the match. “I thought our forward pack in particular was very strong (and) we defended really well,” Gardiner said. The Bears have made changes to their 2015 side, with more younger players making the cut.
