LOSS 14-15 (Golden Point)
The Rabbitohs fell just short against the Melbourne Storm 14-15 after a thrilling Saturday night game in honour of Ovarian Cancer Australia went to golden point. The Rabbitohs dominated possession in the first half applying plenty of pressure on the oppositions try line from the onset. The first half contained a high number of penalties with tries denied to both sides resulting in a low scoring start. The Storm were the first to find the try line when an offload from Cooper Cronk sent Kenny Bromwich over however the try was disallowed due to obstruction. It was Aaron Gray who was the next to find the line in the 28th minute, yet a double movement ruling resulted in another disallowed try. Consistent well-weighted kicks by Adam Reynolds paid off in the 36th minute when the Rabbitohs were finally rewarded after an attacking bomb set up Alex Johnston and saw him get over the line in the far right corner. Reynolds executed the conversion bringing the Rabbitohs to lead six points to zero. In similar circumstances to that of their opposition, the Rabbitohs were again denied their second attempt at a try due to obstruction leaving Greg Inglis’ attempt unsuccessful in the 33rd minute. The end of the first half saw the Rabbitohs keep the Storm scoreless which marks the first time the Melbourne based team have not scored in the first half since the first week of finals in 2014. The Storm were quick to respond in the second half, scoring five minutes in and levelling the scores 6-all after a successful conversion to Cameron Smith. Another Storm try minutes later sent the Melbourne team into the lead. In the 57th minute Reynolds found Angus Crichton with another well placed kick. Crichton took a spectacular mark off a high kick and firmly grounded the ball for a try. The try by Crichton is the first of his NRL career. Reynolds made no mistake with the conversion, putting the Rabbitohs in front by two. The scores were soon to be levelled again when Smith kicked a successful penalty goal in the 62nd minute. Shortly after, on the back of a dangerous Melbourne tackle on John Sutton, Adam Reynolds put the Rabbitohs in front 14 points to 12 after converting a penalty kick. When it looked like the game was coming to an end, the Storm were granted an opportunity after Damien Cook upended Cameron Munster. The Storm levelled the game at 14-all, sending the game into golden point. When it looked like the Rabbitohs were close to come inbetween Melbourne and the number one ladder spot, Smith found the posts ending the game.

U20 National Youth Holden Cup - Round 22
v Melbourne, Sunshine Coast Stadium, Sat Aug 6 2:45pm
LOSS 14-48
Late Changes - Manowski and Cordtz drop off the bench
The Under 20s Rabbitohs squad have gone down to the Melbourne Storm 20s squad at Sunshine Coast Stadium. In overcast and windy conditions, the Under 20s Storm side took advantage of an early chance inside their attacking end with winger Cory Parker sneaking over in the corner after three minutes. Melbourne doubled their lead four minutes later when a cross-field kick bounced kindly for opposite winger Talor Walters, who had little work to do in order to take the score to 8-0. The Rabbitohs struck back after a Melbourne error gifted them field position and lock Keaon Koloamatangi crashed over from close range to bring the visitors back within two points. A 40/20 kick by Thunderbolts' utility Caleb Daunt put the home team back on the attack and they soon forced back-to-back sets leading to their third try of the afternoon. It took a pin-point grubber kick by fullback Jesse Arthars to find Parker who grounded for his second try and a 12-6 lead after 21 minutes. South Sydney narrowed the deficit again when winger Josh Ellison scored in the corner in the 30th minute, before a 30-metre bust through the centre by Storm's Jacob Boyce set up halfback Matt Egan who crossed underneath the posts for an 18-10 lead. Melbourne were first to score five minutes after the break with a Scott Drinkwater try and Arthars conversion taking the scoreboard out to 24-10. Three minutes later Souths' fullback Bailey Shiach-Wise found space on the Thunderbolts' right edge to give the Rabbitohs a sniff at 24-14. However, that was the last of South Sydney's tries as the Storm notched four more tries before the final siren. Boyce scored in the 54th minute and a line break to Arthars enabled Josh Kerr to cross for a 36-14 lead with 19 minutes remaining. Arthars then bagged a try and converted his own handiwork to take the home side to a 42-14 lead with little time left on the clock. Centre Jacob Tonge added the last try of the match for the Storm two minutes from fulltime when he weaved his way through some tired defence to bring the final score to 48-14.

v Wentworthville, Ringrose Park, Sun Aug 7 3:00pm
LOSS 20-28
Late Changes - Schaumkel is out. Tyrrell starts prop, Murray second row, Tasi and Maula on the bench.
The Wentworthville Magpies have held on in a brutal encounter against the North Sydney Bears, earning a 28-20 victory at Ringrose Oval on Sunday afternoon. Despite a strong opening first half from the home team, the game lived up to expectations in the second 40 as both teams fought bravely to regain the lead - thanks to some brilliant attacking raids seeing them go toe to toe on the score sheet, and match each other ferociously in defence to set up for a thrilling final 10 minutes before the ladder leaders just managed to sneak home in an electrifying game of footy. An early mistake off the first set of the game for the Bears posed the perfect opportunity for Wentworthville to claim an early stranglehold on the game, however some strong goal-line defence from the visitors was enough to keep the game scoreless. After a string of repeat sets at the opposite end, the Bears failed to capitalise and it just took moments later for the Magpies to take full advantage, as Scott Schulte pounced on a pin-point grubber to claim the game's first try of the afternoon. A break by Latrell Robinson soon after might have been the perfect reply to the Magpies early try, however was brought down metres away from the try line thanks to some strong defence from fullback Honeti Tuha. Wentworthville extended their lead on the 20-minute mark, thanks to a brilliant individual effort by Schulte as he showed great speed down the touchline to eventually beat Robinson, streaking away under the posts to score a 60-metre try and his second of the game. A host of opportunities for the Bears down the right-hand side looked to have found the answer to crack the Magpies defence, but the series of attacking raids just weren’t enough as they were unable to capitalise on their chances. Just as the halftime siren blew, the Bears were finally rewarded for their persistence as Ed Murphy crashed over in the corner thanks to a classy backline movement earned themselves a much deserved try Eli Levido failed to convert from the sideline, and the Magpies held a 12-4 lead after a strong first half. A strong start from the Bears to open the second half were promising signs for a team trying to maintain their spot in the top eight of the competition, and a slice of luck finally went their way as Dane Nielson pounced on a loose ball and planted the ball down in the corner. Levido nailed the conversion and the deficit was brought to just two points to ignite the fire in an exciting second half.] Bears were a completely different outfit to the one that opened the game, with hunger helping them extend their lead just two minutes later as Jamel Hunt crashed his way over to claim the lead for the first time of the afternoon. Wentworthville managed to claim their first try of the second half, as a cross-field kick landed in the arms of Schulte, who put in a perfect grubber for back-rower Cody Nelson who just managed to plant the ball down. Dylan Izzard missed his first conversion of the day, setting the scores at 16-14 with 20 minutes to play. The Bears held their own after the ladder leaders third of the afternoon, and they responded just shortly after thanks to a brilliant cut-out pass from Robinson which allowed Abbas Miski to cruise his way to the line to claim the lead once again. Levido made up for his previous missed conversions, nailing the sideline attempt to claim a four-point lead with just 15 minutes remaining. An incredibly entertaining game of footy continued to give more and more with Schulte crossing for his hat-trick straight after losing the lead, with some slick hands from centre Jake Butler-Fleming allowing the competition leaders to gain an immediate reply and draw the game level. Izzard converted brilliantly from the sideline to give his team a two-point lead with just 10 minutes to play. Moments later, Wentworthville all but sealed the game after another mistake from the visitors allowed Honeti Tuha to earn himself a well deserved try, extending their lead to eight points after a brutal closing to a brilliant game of footy. Despite the heroic efforts of the North Sydney Bears, it just wasn’t enough to do damage as Wentworthville extended their lead on top of the Intrust Super Premiership NSW ladder, thanks to a hard-fought, well-deserved 28-20 victory.
