WIN 30-14
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have overcome having four players sent to the sin bin to down arch rivals the Roosters 30-14, in a game that will be forever known as "The battle of Moore Park". Across an 80 minutes best described as chaotic, there were seven sin-binnings - an NRL record, which included Victor Radley and Taane Milne both being sent on two separate occasions - and a high injury toll which saw four players suffer game-ending injuries inside the opening hour. In what proved to be a spiteful affair between the two foundation clubs, seven players were sent to the sin bin, a record, with the Rabbitohs having to defend their line with 11 players for twnty minutes of the match. In a tactical move Demetriou started Murray at second row and Arrow at lock, before they reverted back after 10 minutes. In a heated opening affair it was the Roosters that found themselves reduced to just 12 men after a brain explosion from Victor Radley saw him sent to the sin bin. That resulted immediately in Alex Johnston crossing for his first try and getting the scoring underway. The Roosters immediately hit back with two tries of their own to take an 8-6 lead through the first 20 minutes. The Tom Burgess was placed on report for a high tackle which saw Tedesco forced from the field with a HIA, to not return. But another high tackle minutes later saw Burgess sent to the Sin Bin for 10 minutes. Then a minute later Milne was also sent to the bin for a high tackle while in a desperate cover defence. The Roosters were in the bix seat. But the Rabbitohs flipped the script to take the ascendancy once again. Latrell Mitchell sold the dummy to the defence and was able to crash his way over in the 22nd minute to help the Rabbitohs with 11 men took a 12-8 lead, a score they would take into the break. By halftime the Roosters also lost Angus Crichton failed (HIA) and Daniel Tupou (groin) injury. That lead was pushed out further as Johnston crossed for his second try of the afternoon on the back of a lovely Cody Walker pass to extend the lead out to 10 points. With this try in the second half, his second of the game, Alex Johnston became the first player in Premiership history to score 30 tries across multiple seasons. The fourth player of the afternoon was sent to the sin bin as Jared Warea-Hargreaves was given a breather for a dangerous tackle, giving South Sydney a golden chance to push their lead out further. Burgess was in the thick of it again early in the second half, this time as the victim of a dangerous tackle from Jared Waera-Hargreaves which landed the Roosters prop in the bin. Burgess then left the field for an HIA which he failed. The failed HIA for foul play, allowed South Sydney to activate their 18th man. They did just that, with a Walker grubber close to the line pounced upon by Jai Arrow to lift the lead to 24-8 with 28 minutes left to play. The ensuing kick-off was unable to be caught by Lachlan Ilias, and that was the opportunity the Roosters needed to hit back and keep the Rabbitohs on their toes, cutting the lead back to 10 24-14 approaching the final quarter. After a Roosters error a heated arm wrestle followed, before Tevita Tatola and Radley were also sent to the sin bin. That advantage was enhanced for the Roosters when 4 minutes later Milne was sent from the field for a second time. South Sydney were again down to 11 men with 15 minutes to go. But once again the visitors were able to respond to the call and fight off the charge. That was capitalised upon by Tass, who busted through the line against 11 men, selling a dummy to the defence to find his way over and put the result beyond doubt with nine minutes to play. With the Roosters hanging around and within two tries, the Rabbitohs were able to secure possession late in the contest, to ensure South Sydney progressed to the second round of the finals.
