Let the Trials Begin

Team list Tuesday signalled the start of a new year at NRL as the first trials kickoff this weekend. The first trial is always played by a fringe first grade players and this we see a lot of new backline players getting their first run. This week also beings a new competition called the Pre-Season Challenge over two weeks with a very interesting points system to determine the winner over two weeks of football. All teams bar the main NRL squad are on show this weekend, so a big 6 grade weekend coming up.

Havili rotten luck

Havili has battled with a shoulder injury during the Rugby League World Cup, but it seems a torn tendant in his ankle from a training injury has resulted in him needing to have surgery and knocked him out for a extended period. Speedy recovery.

Tass rewarded

With a number of players pulling out of the NRL All-Stars match, it was good to see the quickly improving Isaiah Tass given a opportunity to join the All-Stars indigenous team. Best of luck in his senior rep debut.

Big Reserve Grade win

While all of the focus last weekend was on the gripping contest at Redfern, our fringe Reserve Grade team had a hitout against the NSW Cup Western Suburb Magpies at Lidcombe. It was a match we dominated from start to finish as we rattled up 11 tries. While I won't read too much into trials as it looks like the opposition fringe players were clearly below par, it was never the less a good hitout for those players with some of them rewarded with selection this week.

Le Blanc one to watch

Jot this name down Liam Le Blanc. It wont be long before we this player makes a name for himself in the senior levels. He is a lock with size and looks like he is still growing. I expect him to step up when his U19 commitments are over and is already a player of the future.

Maori Women selections

Four of new Kiwi women have been selected in the NZ Maori team for the All-Stars clash this weekend. Congratulations to Paki, Paekau, Butler and Cassidy. We wish them well on the weekend.

George & Noelene Piggins accept Member Co Life Membership Transfer

It was a great day for South Sydney this week with the announcement that Goerge and Noelene Piggins decided to accept their Life Membership transfers. George Piigins was awarded SSDRLFC Life Membership back in 1978 and Noelene in 2001. But with the legal changes during the 2006 privatisation structure, all Memberships transfered over to Member Co. by acceptance. Both were leading figures during the fightback period, and without them South Sydney would not be here today. It was great to see these differences settled and everyone in the South Sydney family moving forward together once again.
