LOSS 28-30
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have started the 2023 season in promising fashion despite going down 30-28, with a young outfit impressing in a high-scoring thriller against the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in the first round of the Preseason Challenge at Industree Group Stadium. Second rower Jacob Host enjoyed a strong return to the field in his first match since mid-May, leading the side out as Captain, while Assistant John Morris took over coaching duties from Jason Demetriou for the match. Young five-eighth Dion Teaupa had a blockbuster opening 20 minutes, scoring two tries and setting up another, while Blake Taaffe was busy with the ball in hand, moving between fullback and the halves throughout, scoring a try as well. On a dry track in balmy conditions, the Rabbitohs enjoyed a strong start through the softening-up period, scoring just six minutes in off the back of a dynamic bust from Taaffe, with winger Tom Carr swooping on a deft kick from Teaupa. While Manly struck back with a try of their own, Teaupa impressed once again to extend the scores as he regathered a well-weighted kick, which bounced perfectly into his arms after coming off the goalposts in a brilliant individual effort. Desperate scramble defence led by Host denied their opponents over the line, while Taaffe‘s work with the ball in hand led to Carr repaying his five-eighth, who dived over to score his second and extend the lead to 18-4 after 21 minutes. The winger was denied a second four-pointer from a forward pass soon after, and ill-discipline on both sides of the ball saw the Sea Eagles take the lead at the break, with the young Rabbitohs trailing 20-18 and needing to recapture their form ahead of the second half. A dubious obstruction penalty denied Davvy Moale from regaining the lead for the Red and Green, but Richie Kennar and Taaffe combined soon after, leading to the Central Coast local scoring off his own kick and converting to make the scores 24-20. While the Rabbitohs took control to force multiple line drop outs in the ensuing period, Manly hit back to level once again, setting up a thrilling final quarter of the match with fatigue creeping into both camps. Desperation in defence from the Cardinal and Myrtle denied their opponents time and time again on the line, and the Rabbitohs needed to go up another level after a dangerous tackle saw the side down to twelve men. Despite their mismatch in numbers and with the Sea Eagles taking the lead, the Rabbitohs continued their charge, and a scheming run saw halfback Jarrett Subloo slice through to give his side a chance to level once again, only for the fulltime hooter to deny the side a chance to complete a comeback.

Late changes - Towns, Le Blanc and Heslin are out. Munro started fullback, Scholes on the wing, Aarons at second row, Risati starts at lock. Casey is the concussion sub. The Dogs got off to a quick start scoring 2 quick tries to take a early 10 nill lead. But with Munro at fullback, he chimmed in to score back to back tries to even up the game at 10 all. A backline move saw Scholes score out wide and Souths hit the front 14-10 and would hold onto their lead into the break. The second however was dominated by the Bulldogs as they ran in 4 unanswered tries to take out the match 14 to 32.

v Warriors, Redfern Oval, Sun Feb 5 11:00am [Bunnies TV]
LOSS 8-10
The home side looked ominous early on when highly touted winger Tyrone Munro scored in the corner, untouched, within three minutes from the opening whistle. Yet that wasn’t case as the Warriors worked their way back into the contest, replying in the 11th minute with a brilliant individual play from hooker Etuate Fukofuka. Scooping the ball on last tackle from dummy half at about 40 metres from the try-line, the No.9 chipped ahead of the retreating defence before regathering on one bounce and shrugging off the fullback to score. He converted his own try for a 6-4 lead. Both sides added to their try-scoring tally before halftime with centre Drew Williams crossing for the Rabbitohs and winger Sio Kali for the Warriors, taking the score to 10-8. It was a try-less second half as the two teams went close to scoring on several occasions, but the Warriors held on for the win after surviving a pair of late penalty goal attempts.

NSWRL U19 SG Ball Cup Trial
v Balmain, Marcellin Fields, Sat Jan 21 11:00am
WIN 42-22
Match was played in three 25 minute thirds. John Suttons SG Ball boys exploded out of the blocks and played some great footy. They eventually blew the Tigers away with a 9 tries to 4 victory. Headlining the teams best performances was Tyrone Munros 4 tries and a try assist. The Tigers had no answer for the flying winger. The sky is the limit for this young bloke. Fullback Dane Towns was outstanding again chiming into the backline and causing havoc for the opposition every time he touched the ball. Towns scored a try and set up 4 tries for his teammates. Daniel Wright was superb as well scoring a try and giving the final pass for 3 more tries. Newly recruited lock Liam Le Blanc was impressive and rock solid in the middle. Number 6 Jye Gray was everywhere and was a level above the opposition. Gray suffered a leg injury late in the match as he crossed for a try. This was a terrible incident to witness but we are hearing that Jye hopes to be back in a few weeks. Grey injured his hamstring as he scored his last try.

LOSS 12-18
Match was played in four 20 minute quarters. Luke Dellars Harold Matthews team started well. Two tries to flying centre Charlie Poynton saw them take a two tries to one lead. Charlies first try brought back memories of the legendary Terry Fahey as he charged down the left hand touch line. Poyntons second try was created by some clever lead up work from five-eight Tylan Berryman. A big Tigers side hit back then scored a late try to seal a 4 tries to 2 victory.

NSWRL U19 SG Ball Cup Trial
v Penrith, Marcellin Fields, Sat Jan 14 10:00am
LOSS 12-36
First up was the U19 SG Ball trial. A few players were stepping up from Harold Matthews U17 squad this year. The match was played in 4 x 20 minute quarters. Squads were swapped around every quarter as coach John Sutton looked to understand his best combination for the first round. Kick off is on February 5th, a short 4 weeks away. The opening quarter was played under overcast conditions, as the Souths boys took it up to Penrith early. However a well drilled Penrith put on two tries at the back end of the quarter going into the break 8 nil. The second quarter was a similar story with dropped ball being an issue as the rain swept across the ground. Penrith added another two tries going into the break 16 nil. No goals were being attempted. The second half saw some changes, and with some regular possession it was not long before a lovely backline move saw fullback Dane Towns chime into the line scoring a try. Only two minutes later we were back in scoring position. A bench second rower #15 scored and clawed back two tries. A late try in the quarter to Penrith saw us win the quarter 2 tries to 1 but still behind 8 to 20. The final quarter saw Penrith skip away further with two early tries. Before a dummy half try saw us cross their line. Penrith hit back with a final two tries to dominate the last quarter. The game finished 12 to 36 or 9 tries to 3 to Penrith. It was a good hit out against one of the stronger teams. There is however some work to do improving ball control and developing defensive combinations.

DRAW 12-12
Next up was the U17 Harold Matthew 3-way trial. The match again was played in 4 x 20 minute quarters. The first two quarters against the Penrith Mats team, and our last two quarters against the Central Coast Mats team. Penrith and Central coast played each other in between. The game got off to a slow start as a weight of possession allowed Penrith to dominate the early part of the game as we let in 3 tries in the first 11 minutes. The team then switched into gear as momentum changed. A good try to second rower Quinn Mersal late in the quarter saw us get on the board and go into the break 4-12. The second quarter was all Souths as a lovely setup try saw us edge back to 8-12 before we were in again from a stepping run from Matt Humphries. Souths won the quarter and drew the clash with Penrith 12 all.

WIN 8-4
By the time the team return for the second stanza of the 3 way trial versus the Central Coast the rain had passed. The sun was out as the day started to warm up. The first quarter started with a try to the Coast and it would remain like that until the first break 0-4. The last quarter saw Souths start dominating the game with a strong forward try before a lovely cutout pass saw Saxon Lester score out wide. He was unlucky not to the same a few minutes later. Souths winning the quarter and the game 8 to 4. There are some good signs here for coach Luke Kellar to work with.

DRAW 16-16
The South Sydney Rabbitohs womens team played the Dragons yesterday in the summer heat at Mascot Oval. Souths womens team let in a few early tries to a Dragons team with a big pack of forwards. A fired up half time speech from coach Shane did the trick. The second half saw the team get their act together and put on some nice tries. A late try by the Dragons made it a four tries all result.

WIN 16-8
The South Sydney Rabbitohs Tarsha Gale team took on the Panthers in the lead up match. Missing a few of their star players the Bunnies Tarsha Gale girls played some good footy to defeat the Panthers four tries to two. Souths lost talented hooker Kasey Taaffe to injury in the first quarter of the 80 minute contest. Kasey hyper extended her elbow and was off to hospital with her arm in a sling.
