9 Players Return
We have had a week off after another week impacted by origin or injury. Well its finally Round 21 with 7 rounds to go and we get back 9 players this week. Firstly our 4 origin players return, plus injured origin players Mitchell, Arrow and Graham, suspended player Host and last minute withdrawal Hame Sele. So this week our team has a major new look as we start the back 3rd of the season. The equation reads that we still need 4 more wins to qualify for the finals. Now for the first game on our 13,000km road trip against the front running Broncos.
Walker & Murray origin masterclass
In a NSW origin record we had 4 players represent the club as Fittler back tracked his prior comment that he didn't want the NSW team to play like South Sydney. But with Cook at hooker, Murray first time at starting lock and Walker at 5/8, play like South Sydney they did. The effect was almost immediate as they combined to destroy the Queenslands down the left side. So good was Walker's return performance he earned the Man of Match as the boys. Everyone is looking to see the boys bring they devestating form back into the team.
Cartwright huge gameWith a late call up Jed came into the reserve grade team, and turned in a outstanding performance when he moved out to right centre setting up line breaks and try assists to guide the team to a very important victory. His skills will be needed over the coming months as the team heads into the finals.
Jye Gray returns
Another name returned from inury last week. Jye gray has been struggling a hamstring injury all year, and finally got back on the paddock this week. He was able to score a late try and will be better for the run.
Piggins Hall of Fame Honour
What a great honor this week as George Piggins was accepted into the NRL Hall of Fame. He led from the front during fightback, staying firm while everything seemed lost as the club took on the giant News Ltd. He had three careers at Souths from being a premiership winner and club captain, to award winning coach. Before he took over the administration duties at the club, finishing off the Leagues Club, and then having to lead fight for survival that started during the Super League War and went all the way through a bitter 2 year court battle for re-instatement. The phrase with George there would not South Sydney rings very true and the club will always be in his debt. It was great to see the NRL acknowledge his contributions, and reminding everyone tradition is important. Well deserved.
