LOSS 32-36

It was always going to be a tough task with nine players missing due to injury, Origin commitments and suspension, but the Rabbitohs started the contest strongly. A strong tackle on the last forced a repeat set in the opening minutes, and stand-in captain Tom Burgess made them pay from the ensuing set with a charging run seeing him score under the posts inside five minutes. An error soon after the kick-off saw the Bulldogs take advantage off the scrum through Blake Wilson to level scores up. Souths were handicapped from the very next set with Taane Milne sent to the sin bin for a shoulder charge after a lengthy delay from the Bunker. Wilson's second try of the night on the back of a charge down gave the Bulldogs a 12-6 lead through 14 minutes as they made use of the extra man. Some sloppy defence allowed the Bulldogs to march down the field and make it back-to-back tries through Reed Mahoney, pushing the lead to 18-6. The onslaught ended after a dropped ball, and it was South Sydney's turn to hit back, with quick hands from Richie Kennar giving Tyrone Munro enough space to put some footwork on and make it two tries in as many NRL games. A questionable obstruction call gave the Bulldogs good field position, and they capitalised in the corner with a Jacob Kiraz try. A clever kick from Lachlan Ilias intended for Munro almost had the desired effect, only for the winger to prove too quick as Canterbury held a 24-12 lead at the break. Canterbury was on the attack to start the second half, and looked certain to score 10 minutes in if not for the swift work of Milne to knock a pass down and kill the play. The relentless possession and field position proved too much for Souths to handle, as they cracked in the 56th minute with Ethan Quai-Ward's try making the task tough for the home side to come back from. Just as the game looked to be slipping away, Blake Taaffe used his pace to perfection, racing the best part of 40m to get the Rabbitohs back in contention. A clear double movement from the Bulldogs saw them bailed out with Souths ruled to be offside, allowing them to take an easy shot at goal for a 30-16 lead. It was Taaffe again in the thick of things to keep the game alive, breaking through a tackle after an unders ball from Ilias to cut the margin to 30-22 with less than 13 minutes to play. Any hopes of a comeback were all-but erased soon after however, with Wilson’s third of the night making the task an impossible one. Munro's second of the night continued his hot try-scoring form to make it 36-26 with three minutes to play. Tallis Duncan then provided a highlight moment from the kick-off, breaking the line, linking with Peter Mamouzelos and then getting the ball back to race the length of the field to cut the margin to four with a little over two minutes left. Unfortunately they couldn’t go on with it, with Canterbury denying one last charge at the line.

Reserve Grade - Knock-On Effect NSW Premiership Round 19

v Canterbury-Bansktown, 5:10pm

LOSS 16-44

Late Changes - Kennar, Knight and Chapman are out. Kaho starts on the wing, Gordan at prop, Rahme at lock, Gray and Alvarado on the bench. Miller is the concussion sub. The South Sydney Rabbitohs hosted the first-placed Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Round 19 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup at Accor Stadium, where a new look Bulldogs side put in a strong performance to comfortably defeat the Rabbitohs 16-44. Canterbury-Bankstown struck first in this encounter when some slick passing down the left edge found Hayze Perham, who broke through the line and passed the ball out to winger Jonathan Sua. Sua sped down the wing and found Perham back inside, who crossed over for the first points of the day. The Bulldogs doubled their lead just minutes after when halfback Bailey Biondi-Odo broke through a tackle and ran for 20 metres, before passing to his fullback Khaled Rajab who dived underneath the posts for a try. The try was converted to give the Bulldogs a 0-12 lead. It didn’t take long for South Sydney to bounce back when some tidy combinations down the left edge found the hands of captain Tom Carr who used his pace to speed past the defenders and dive over for a try. The Bulldogs responded swiftly when they found themselves with a repeat set in the Rabbitohs 10m line and a delightful cut-out pass found Jonathan Sua who dived over for his first try of the day. The conversion was waved away to leave the score at 4-16. The combination of Hayze Perham and Jonathan Sua continued to blossom with Perham making a break and passing the ball out to Sua on the wing, who sped past the Rabbitohs defenders and ran around to place the ball directly between the posts. The Bulldogs picked up where they left off in the second half with Perham scoring his second try of the afternoon. After finding himself with the ball 20 metres out from the tryline, Perham whizzed past several defenders to score a tidy solo try. Five-eighth Bailey Hayward converted the subsequent 2-pointer from out wide to extend his team’s lead to 4-28. Canterbury-Bankstown continue to pile on the misery at Accor Stadium when halfback Bailey Biondi-Odo eyed a gap in the Rabbitohs’ defence and received a crisp pass from Hayward to charge through the middle of the posts and score himself a try. The Rabbitohs finally bounced back and scored their first points of the second half when a quick pass found the hands of Zac Makelim and he crashed over the line to score the first try of his career. Tom Carr nailed the conversion to bring the score to 10-34. The Bulldogs returned serve with just seven minutes remaining when five-eighth Hayward kicked a delightful grubber into the in-goal before regathering the ball to score off his own kick. The Rabbitohs scored a late consolation try in the final 90 seconds when Zac Makelim received the ball, stepped past two defenders, and crashed over to score his second of the day. This game was not without drama up until the last second as Bulldogs replacement hooker Ryan Gray broke through the line and found Paul Alamoti, who sprinted half the field to score in the corner right on the full-time siren for the Bulldogs.

NSWRL U21 Jersey Flegg - Round 18

v Parramatta, Ringrose Park, Sat Jul 8 1:00pm

LOSS 18-24

Late Changes - Kaho, Lole-Ngarima and Vaka are out. Legaimafa starts on the wing. Herring is the concussion sub. The game started well for Souths with a lovely ball to Woodford seeing him crash over in a lovely second row play. But Parramatta hit back with quick tries. But Souths hit back to level when Towns went over near the posts. Another try to Parramatta before Towns was sin binned at the back end of the half. A poor pass from Di Bartolo saw the Eels run unopposed for a try. A late penalty goal saw the Ells lead at the break 12-20. The second half was a tough affair, with a lovely kick through saw Macey score making it 18-20. Then in a break down the blind side saw Macey once again in the clear only to be pulled back for a forward pass. Parramatta caught the inside napping in a blind side rush to score. But they held on as Souths threw everything at them late in the game to win 18-24.
