LOSS 10-18

South Sydney has gone down fighting against the Melbourne Storm in round five at Accor Stadium, falling 18-10. Both teams found metres easy to come by in the first few sets of the match, but it was an unfortunate collision between Lachlan Ilias and Campbell Graham that saw the ball fall into Josh King’s lap, seeing him cross for first points in the sixth minute. That lead was quickly snapped up as Cameron Murray got through the defensive line, giving a sweet offload for Cody Walker to hit back after 11 minutes of play. Scrambling defence came to the fore after another spilled kick by the Rabbitohs, with a frantic passage of playing going through multiple Melbourne hands, resulting in desperate defence denying Harry Grant over the line. Back-to-back penalties gifted the Storm great field position, and they took full advantage in the 22nd minute, with William Warbrick busting his way through two tackles to take back the lead for the visitors. While points were hard to come by through the middle stages, Davvy Moale produced one of the biggest hits of the season on Alec McDonald, with a tackle that could be heard in Melbourne. They had chances in Melbourne’s half, but dropped balls again proved costly as the visitors held a 12-6 lead at the break. Souths had the bulk of the territory throughout the first 40, but passes weren’t able to stick deep in the red zone, letting the Storm off the hook on multiple occasions. The second half couldn’t have started any worse for the Rabbitohs, with two clean line breaks from the Storm busting them right open. The first opportunity went astray, but the visitors made no mistakes with the second, with a lovely kick from Xavier Coates finding Cameron Munster to push the lead out to 12. Chances arose after a spilled ball from Nick Meaney soon after, but again that window closed due to a dropped ball while deep in Melbourne territory. Melbourne had a golden shot of their own to extend the advantage to 18, but a bundled put down was capitalised upon by the home side. A penalty helped them keep the pressure on, and Latrell Mitchell was able to drag defenders in close to the line, put Graham into enough space to bring the score back to 18-10. The momentum was all in South Sydney’s favour, but Murray was ruled to have passed off the ground deep on the Storm’s line, temporarily deflating the atmosphere. With time winding down, two amazing try-saving tries from Nick Meaney on Alex Johnston and Harry Grant on Izaac Tu’itupou Thompson denying the chance of a grandstand finish. Unfortunately, Johnston was ruled out with a category one HIA.

NSWRL U19 SG Ball Cup - Round 9

v St George, Redfern Oval, Sat Apr 1 12:30pm [Bunnies TV]

WIN 32-24

Late changes - Team was 1-17. Devonshire was the concussion sub. The Rabbitohs SG Ball Cup side finished their season on a high on a wet Saturday afternoon at Redfern Oval, defeating St George 32-24. Winless and luckless up until last weekend, the Red and Greens claimed back-to-back victories to a tough campaign on a winning note, one that was severely affected by injuries. Brent Hawkins scored South Sydney's first points after the Dragons gained an early advantage, and while their opponents returned serve, tries to Cooper McLaren and Jonti Morshead-Fieldel in a seven-minute period gave the side an 18-12 half-time lead. The Rabbitohs struck again in quick succession out of the sheds with fullback Dane Towns and Leroy Murray adding their names to the scoresheet as the side took a three-try lead heading into the final fifteen minutes. While the Dragons brought it back to a six-point game with five remaining, a penalty goal in the shadows of full-time saw the Rabbitohs hold on for a memorable victory.

NSWRL U17 Matthews Cup - Round 9

v St George, 11:00am [Bunnies TV]

LOSS 24-30

Late changes - Dowling, Duffy and Hughes are out. Pasikala starts prop, Robertson on the bench and Moses is the concussion sub. It was a narrow loss for the Harold Matthews Cup Rabbitohs, who were defeated by the St George Dragons 24-30 in yet another high-scoring game in the wet at the Club's spiritual home ground. The Red and Green were a mathematical chance of qualifying for the finals ahead of the match but were unable to claim the two competition points which saw them relying on other results to qualify. Fullback Braethan Bilich touched down for the Rabbitohs after the side conceded an early try, with halfback Matthew Humphries scoring himself soon after as the sides were unable to be separated at the break. While their task became harder as the Dragons scored in quick succession just minutes on resumption, Humphries' double coupled with a try to lock Daniel Lua saw the scoreline level once again at 24-apiece. Unfortunately, a Dragons try with less than ten remaining saw the Rabbitohs trail once more, with the final scoreboard reading 30-24 in favour of the visitors.

NSWRL Womens Premiership - Round 9

v St George, 2:00pm [Bunnies TV]

WIN 24-4

Late Changes - Whiteley is out. Kilisimasi starts at prop, Butler on the bench, Perugini is the concussion sub. Following a close victory last weekend, the Harvey Norman Women's Premiership side backed up their recent scalp to claim a dominant 24-4 win over the St George Dragons at Redfern Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Rabbitohs kicked off from where they left off with a fast start, which included three tries in the first five minutes, with Captain Patricia Raikadroka claiming a double. It didn't take long before Charlette Butler touched down for the Cardinal and Myrtle's fourth of the afternoon, and while St George managed to return serve, a four-pointer to winger Paige Knapp brought the half-time scores to 24-4. With the wet conditions playing their part at Redfern, neither side was able to add to the try-scoring list after the break, with the Rabbitohs securing an impressive 20-point win in what was one of their finest victories of the season so far.
