WIN 28-12
The match kicked off as the Rabbitohs went head-to-head with the coranation of King Charles III. Two of South Sydney’s finest turned it on for Magic Round, as Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell combined for a try and four assists in a 28-12 win over Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium. The win moves the Rabbitohs up to second on the ladder, with a strong first half defensive effort setting the tempo. After holding out a set of Melbourne attacking their line within the opening sets, the Rabbitohs made full use of their first chance in the red zone. Mitchell found himself at dummy half after Alex Johnston went close to scoring, feigning a pass before grubbering in behind the line for Walker to pounce and score. The Storm had all the running from that point on, with a combination of penalties and repeat sets camping them deep in Rabbitohs territory, before a regathered short dropout from Mitchell relieved the pressure. The lead was extended in the 19th minute as Walker found himself in the thick of things again, running to the line and putting Jacob Host through a hole 10m out to get over the line with ease and push the margin to 12-0. Both teams had their chances through the next passage of play, with an intense 10-minute period seeing both sides on the attack. Another run of four successive Storm sets was held out by some strong defence, but eventually they would wilt in the 36th minute, after Reimis Smith capitalised on a dropped bomb from Walker to get Melbourne on the board and bring the score back to 12-6 at the break. Again Melbourne had the territory to start the second half, but Souths got a golden opportunity inside five minutes after Lachlan Ilias forced an error with his bomb. The boot of Mitchell once more led to points, taking advantage of a rushing Storm defence to put a grubber in behind the line, gifting a flying Johnston a try in his milestone 200th game. A heads up play from Taane Milne forced Xavier Coates over the sideline, and they took full advantage, with a slick backline movement in the 54th minute started by Damien Cook and finished by Johnston to stretch the score to 22-6. His 171st NRL try. Tensions threatened to boil over with some big hits and rushing defence, setting up an intriguing final 15 minutes of play. The result was as good as over in the 68th minute with another try assist from Walker pushing the scoreline to 28-6. A curving grubber tricked the defence, with Isaiah Tass getting on the end of it to cap a strong night for the centre with a try and an assist. Son Bronson Garlick of former captain Sean Garlick scored a late try for the Storm from dummy half, his first in the NRL.

v Sydney Roosters, North Sydney Oval, Sat May 6 11:00am [NSWRL TV]
WIN 28-26
Late Changes - Tyson Hodge and Cody Hodge are out. B.Gray started at prop, Lovett at lock, Duncan on the bench. Moretti is the concussion sub. South Sydney Rabbitohs’ fullback Blake Taaffe had a day out at North Sydney Oval in his side’s 28-26 victory over the Sydney Roosters in Round 10 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup. It only took the Roosters their first set to open the scoring. Off the back of a penalty, a quick shift on the right edge and an offload from Nathan Brown found Siua Wong in open space, who flicked a pass for winger Allan Fitzgibbon to crash over in the corner. Shortly after the Rabbitohs went on the attack to no avail. Then the Roosters had no issues getting back to the other end, before a long ball from five-eighth Joseph Taipari gave winger Jade Anderson room to move down the sideline for another four-pointer. Trailing 10-0, Souths eventually gained momentum, scoring two quick tries. First it was a desperation play from winger Tom Carr, batting the ball back from beyond the dead-ball line for Peter Mamouzelos to sweep up the loose ball and score. The second came from Richard Kennar when he barnstormed his way through the Roosters’ line to put the Bunnies in front. The Roosters took advantage of an error from the Rabbitohs, with captain Sandon Smith throwing a short ball to Siua Wong, beating Blake Taaffe to get over the try-line. Taaffe would get his revenge minutes later by using his pace to split the Roosters’ left edge and outpace Smith, taking the score-line to 16-all at halftime. Early in the second half Roosters hooker Tyler Moriarity’s acceleration led to Wong again in open space. Sandon Smith then double-pumped and threw short to halfback Coby Thomas for the try. Rabbitohs held most of the possession thereafter, though ill-discipline and unstructured play left points begging. At the Roosters’ next opportunity Jade Anderson was able to his size to muscle over in the corner for a double. South Sydney hit back straight after, with Taaffe again crossing over at pace, converting his own try to bring the deficit to four points. On the cusp of breaking their three-game losing streak, a turnover from the Roosters saw the Rabbitohs advance downfield, with Taaffe supporting through a gap and putting Mamouzelos over under the posts in the 76th minute. The try gave the No.9 his double and South Sydney the eventual win.
