Worst Rabbitohs Team in history
While there has been improvement this week, in 2024 we have conceeded 320 points in 9 games. This is the worst defensive performance in the club's history. As a club under a interim coach, we are in limbo while the club complete's it coaching decision process, with all eyes focused on the Monday's meeting between South Sydney management and the potential return of former coach Wayne Bennett. And oh by the way we have a game this weekend against the Cowboys in Brisbane during Magic Round.
Mitchell double
Mitchell returned this weekend, and he had a immediate impact in his combination with Cody Walker resulting in two tries. We will need many more of these to turn around our fortunes this season.
Captain Chapman
Chase Chapman, has been a unsung worker in our reserve grade team and on the weekend he was rewarded with the captaincy after the unavailablity of Hawkins, Gagai and Brock Gray. It has been well deserved appointment.
Another Hawkins steps up
Another brother combination will make it to reserve grade, this weekend. The other half of the famous Footy Dean Youtube channel, Brent Hawkins gets his chance at reserve grade this weekend. Best of luck.
NRL Top 30 fails in rewarding Performance
Now for the second issue that occures with the current Top 30 salary cap, when players actually return. If a replacement player performs while a top 30 player is out injured, you must drop him for a Top 30 player. This is so unfair for the replacement player and forces you rush back injured players in top grade at risk of further injury rather than bringing them back via Reserve Grade. The RLPA and NRL have created a CBA that becomes unworkable in extreme circumstances. Esepecially when you loose two players in the same position. We need to expand the Top 30 to be a Top 40.
Round 10 - Stat Attack
Statistically it was poor game again this week. Completions dropped to 66% from 78% last week. Errors dropped to 15 from 7 last week. Our second worst all year. We gave away 4 penalties and 5 6-again calls from 12 last week. Souths Effective 1st tackle dropped but still in a poor level of 39.6m from 36.6m last week. Our missed tackles improved to a good level of 28 from 33 last week. Opposition offloads improved to 6 from 9 last week.
Looking at our left side defence - Thompson-Wighton-Walker-Arrow (1-2-2-2) improved to 7 from 11 missed tackles last week. On the right side Shibasaki-CheeKam-Teaupa-Koloamatangi (0-4-3-1) was steady at 8 again this week. Ruck defence Moale/Havili/French-Cook/Mamouzelos-Keppie/Burgess-Havili/Duncan/Cook (2-2-5-3) improved to 12 from 14 missed tackles last week.
Our go forward improved to 1582m from 1136m last week. With our props made a very poor 319m compared to 339m last week. Koloamatangi, Burgess made 10+m per run. Koloamatangi, Arrow, Cook, CheeKam, Thompson, Shibasaki and LMitchell made 100+m in the match. Defensively Cook was our best in the tackling raking up 48 tackles. Havili, Duncan, French, Mamouzelos and Shibasaki didn't miss a tackle.
