Coxon, a South Sydney RU hooker, was enticed to come across to rugby league as the 1908 RU season was ending. South Sydney had been recruiting for the end of the 1908 season due to the coming departure of the Kangaroos which were going to include 6 South Sydney players, including hooker Arther Hennessy. He initially listed under the alias of "Jack" early in his League career, due to the type of work he was doing(Jack is used to describe a sailor or mechanic), and that the Union season had not completed, for South Sydney RU just yet. Coxon made his debut in the 1908 Round 9 clash against Balmain at Birchgrove Oval.
With jersey's scarce, Coxon would play the 1908 season in his RU district jersey.
