LOSS 14-15

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs by one point in this evening’s Good Friday clash at ANZ Stadium in front of 43,255 Members and supporters. Both sets of fans turned out in force to see the Rabbitohs lead for much of the game, only to be denied in the dying stages of the match by a Trent Hodkinson field goal. The Bulldogs looked to score early – putting the Rabbitohs on the back-foot in defence with Josh Morris’ pass to Corey Thompson sending the winger in. The video referee didn’t agree though, with a Dogs player deemed to be offside during the play. Souths bombed a chance at the other end of the field just minutes later when a back-line movement drew the Dogs defence thanks to Greg Inglis before the fullback threw the ball out to an un-marked Bryson Goodwin, but the former Bulldog couldn’t hold it. The Rabbitohs continued to attack with Adam Reynolds kicking to the wing of Nathan Merritt, but the record-breaking try-scorer could only get a finger-tip to the pill in mid-air before going dead in-goal. After 29 minutes, a penalty to the Rabbitohs 11 metres out gave the home-team an opportunity to get the first points of the match through Adam Reynolds. Joe Picker felt a little worse for wear following the penalty-goal after enduring a shoulder-charge and a suspected crusher tackle – the forward having to be assisted from the field. With four minutes remaining in the first half, Sam Burgess took a short-pass from Greg Inglis inside the Dog’s 10 metre line with Burgess hitting the ball at speed and crashing over to open the try-scoring tab for the afternoon out wide. Reynolds converted to make it 8-0 in the Rabbitohs’ favour. From the ensuing kick-off Dave Tyrrell’s head clashed violently with James Graham – the Rabbitoh leaving the field. Despite some strong attack from the Bulldogs close to the South Sydney line after the break, the Rabbitohs’ defence held strong, with Adam Reynolds managing to kick the side out of trouble on a number of occasions. But after 12 minutes of holding out, the Rabbitohs line was finally broken by Bulldogs winger Mitch Brown out wide to put them back into the game. Trent Hodkinson converted to make it 8-6 in favour of the Rabbitohs. The Bulldogs’ celebrations were short-lived though thanks to Bryson Goodwin’s kick-off being knocked on by Dogs fullback Sam Perrett – gifting Souths an opportunity in good attacking position. A final tackle grubber from Reynolds was then taken by Hodkinson, but Greg Inglis caught the blue and white half in-goal. Hodkinson’s line-drop out travelled 70 metres, but the Rabbitohs were right back up their end by the end of the tackle count to apply yet more pressure. Eventually it came down to Captain John Sutton, who barged over from first-receiver to extend the Rabbitohs lead. Reynolds converted from out wide to make it 14-6 with 14 minutes remaining. A Souths mistake from the kick-off put the pressure right back onto them, with the Bulldogs’ Corey Thompson coming away with a four-pointer of his own. Hodkinson added the extras from the touch-line to make it 14-12 with 11 minutes remaining. A penalty to the Bulldogs mere minutes later gave Trent Hodkinson the opportunity to equalise with 8 minutes remaining. Hodkinson made no mistake, levelling it all up at 14 apiece. Both sides began then began to trade field goal attempts with Hodkinson and Merritt both missing opportunities from close range. But with two minutes left and with the Rabbitohs on the back-foot, Hodkinson snapped a field goal from 25 metres out to boot his team into the lead for the first time in the game.

NYC Cup Round 6

1:45pm

WIN 34-26

Late Changes Khoury dropped off the bench. The Rabbitohs’ NYC side has defeated the Bulldogs in fine style by 34-26 on Good Friday after trailing for much of the match. The side showed great control and patience to overcome a Bulldogs side intent on grabbing their second win of the year. But the Rabbitohs’ resolve proved too strong. Souths dominated the opening exchanges, parking themselves firmly within the Bulldogs’ half and nearly coming away with a four-pointer to an unmarked Sam Young, but Wallace Tangiiti’s pass to the winger dribbled over the side-line. But it was the Bulldogs who got on the board first through centre Sam Gerry-Burgess, who hit the ball at speed before crossing under the sticks. Guy Hamilton converted to make it 6-0 in te Dogs’ favour. Gerry-Burgess was at it again just four minutes later, this time regathering a deflected cross-field kick to cross out wide, making it 10-0. The red and greens hit back mid-way through the half after a last tackle kick failed to be picked up by the Bulldogs. Rabbitohs fullback Devon Makoare-Boyce raced through and snatched the pill before scoring behind the uprights. Irae Simone converted to make it 10-6. Canterbury weren’t about to be out-done though, with fullback Kyle Krisanski-Kennedy grabbing a four-pointer of his own out wide to make it 14-6. Sam Seau also crossed with 12 minutes left in the first stanza with Brad Keighran converting from the touch-line to make it 20-6. Rabbitohs centre Aaron Gray would respond in the best possible way though, slicing through the Dogs defence on the fringes before racing 30 metres to score 10 metres in from touch. Simone missed the conversion, leaving the score at 20-10 in favour of the visitors. On the stroke of half-time Rabbitohs prop Jack Gosiewski crossed crossed out wide to give the Dogs something to think about going into the sheds. Simone’s sideline conversion made it 20-16 at the half. The Bulldogs were first to score in the second half after eight minutes when prop, Danny Fualalo powered over adjacent to the sticks. Brad Keighran converted to make it 26-16. With 20 minutes remaining in the match, Irae Simone danced through the Bulldogs defence from close range to score under the posts before converting to close the gap to 26-22. Souths edged ever closer in the ensuing minutes, and their patience paid off, with winger Tom Hughes scoring right on the side-line to level it all up at 26 apiece. Simone’s pressure-kick sailed over the cross-bar in fine style to give the Rabbitohs the lead for the first time in the afternoon. The home-side continued to grow in confidence, and Eden Syme proved it by showing good foot-work to race in from close-range. Simone added the extras to make it 34-26 in the Rabbitohs’ favour.

NSW Cup Round 7

v Manly-Warringah, NSO Sat Apr 19 3:00pm

L0SS 12-42

Late changes Morgan, Evans out. Tuqiri started fullback, Mark O'Dare started on the wing, Toole in the center, Neal started lock, Roberts started second row and Williams on the bench. Manly scored a their first win of the season with an emphatic 42-14 away victory over North Sydney. Having not previously defeated the Bears at North Sydney Oval, the Sea Eagles laid the foundations for their much needed victory with a superb first half display that saw them up 32-0 at the break. Manly opened its account early when fullback Clint Gutherson made a quick dart from dummy half and found Cheyse Blair in support, the centre crashing over. Halfback Manaia Rudolph converted. However, the match seemed an even contest until the mid-point of the first half, when the Sea Eagles opened up the Bears defence with some rapid on-line ball movement. Jayden Horo was the beneficiary, crossing unmarked in the corner. Rudolph missed the conversion, but Manly were up 10-0. Just two minutes later five-eight Jack Littlejohn found the gap in a 12-man North Sydney defensive line, making a neat break before drawing and passing for Tom Symonds to run 20 metres untouched and plant the ball under the posts. Rudolph’s conversion extended the lead to 16. Manly was suddenly full of confidence and immediately went back on the attack, Daniel Harrison cutting through Norths defenders on a 50 metre run. The Bears were on the back foot, and two plays later Rudolph was able to dive over for a try that he duly converted. The floodgates had clearly opened when, at the half-hour mark, Littlejohn sliced through two defenders and ran 45 metres to score under the posts, Rudolph again converting to make it 28-0. Minutes later Manly looked certain to score again when Blair batted back a high kick to Symonds, who put a strong fend on former Test star Lote Tuqiri. But the ex-international three-quarter, playing in the less customary fullback role, came back at Symonds and managed to rake the ball from his grasp over the line. Despite that show of resistance, Manly continued to press from the ensuing drop-out and Rudolph soon scored his second. Although he did not convert, his side led 32-0 at the break and the Bears fans were already despairing. But Norths weren’t about to give up and 10 minutes after half-time Jackson Williams gave the home crowd something to cheer about when he barged over adjacent to the posts. Kurt Aldridge converted. Two minutes later Norths second rower Chris Grevsmuhl made a clean break and found Nathaniel Neale in support as the cover defence came across. Neale then found Joe Uluibau in support and the centre ran the final 20 metres to score in the right hand corner. Aldridge missed the sideline conversion attempt, but at 32-10 there was a faint whiff that a comeback might be possible. It was another 10 minutes before Manly ensured that would not be the case. A well-timed pass by Symonds allowed Gutherson to skirt down the right edge. He found support in Matt Ikuvalu, who in turn gave Blair a clear run to the line. But Blair generously handed the ball on to a deserving Jayden Hodges, the hooker registering his first try of the season. Rudolph converted from in front. Just three minutes later prop Jake Trbojevic crashed over off a lovely short ball from Tom Symonds to complete Manly’s scoring. The Bears were the last to register points when, with 12 minutes remaining, Joe Uluibau managed to clean up a cross-field kick from halfback Jordan Worboys. Aldridge missed the conversion from wide out, leaving the score at 42-14.
