WIN 28-26
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have stolen victory in the dying minutes of the game from the Brisbane Broncos in an ANZAC Day classic in front of 44,122 at Suncorp Stadium this evening (Friday). With both sides locked at 26 apiece with two minutes remaining, a penalty to the Rabbitohs allowed halfback Adam Reyniolds to kick a 40 metre penalty goal to take the match. But the match was far more than just a thrilling finish. The Rabbitohs raced out to a 14-0 lead after just 15 minutes – including a Greg Inglis try that is sure to feature in the end of year try of the year reel – but the Broncos quickly got back into the match, scoring three tries off the back of 10 straight sets. After blowing good field position early with a mistake, the Rabbitohs got back inside the Broncos’ red zone, mounting a well-orchestrated play that saw Greg Inglis break through and pass onto Apisai Koroisau – the young Fijian putting a huge fend on Justin Hodges to grab his side’s first try and his first try in the top grade. Adam Reynolds added the extras from right next to the posts to make it six nil after eight minutes. A Broncos mistake just one set later right on their own try-line put the Rabbitohs in perfect attacking position, and it was Alex Johnston this time who benefited just nine minutes in to his top grade career – taking an Adam Reynolds chip kick to also grab his first try in the corner. Reynolds’ conversion attempt was waved away leaving the score at 10-0. The Rabbitohs continued to look dangerous, but it was Greg Inglis who outshone them all in the 15th minute off the back of a failed Ben Barba chip kick. Inglis took the erroneous kick before racing almost 80 metres – beating six defenders – to score a brilliant individual try. Reynolds again failed to convert to make it 14 points in 15 minutes for the red and greens. Another Broncos mistake at the 20 minute mark almost allowed Souths to go over again. But despite a purposeful raid from the red and greens, Luke Burgess was unable to hold onto the pill with the line all but open. Just minutes later, Adam Reynolds then looked to attack yet again, this time with a grubber-kick into the in-goal. Dylan Walker swooped onto the ball and looked to score, but the video-referee deemed an Ben Te’o had knocked on in an earlier attempt at the ball. After 25 minutes of play, the Broncos finally got on the board when a rare Greg Inglis mistake allowed Andrew McCullough to plant the ball down out wide. Corey Parker failed to convert making the score 14-4 in Souths’ favour. Lachlan Maranta added to the Broncos’ score-card with a try on the side-line, and with Corey Parker’s conversion, the Rabbitohs found themselves just four points ahead. The Broncos’ Matt Gillett crossed the line in the 36th minute, but despite being held in goal, the Brisbane back-rower got the ball down to grab the lead with Ben Hunt’s conversion, 16-14 at half-time. On the resumption, McCullough managed a sneaky try from dummy-half, catching the Rabbitohs napping in defence. Hunt converted to make it 22-14 in the home-side’s favour. With the Rabbitohs finally back on the Broncos side of half-way, two penalties gifted an opportunity and George Burgess took advantage – the rampaging forward slicing through the Broncos defence to score a much-needed try. Reynolds converted to make it a two-point ball game at 22-20. A penalty for hands in the ruck from Sam Burgess gave the Broncos another shot, and it proved costly for the Rabbitohs as Jack Reed capitalised with a four-pointer to make it 26-20. With the game in the balance, a one on one strip from Chris McQueen allowed the Rabbitohs to attack the Brisbane line. A decoy play then allowed Kirisome Auva’a to slide over for a crucial four-pointer. Reynolds landed the pressure kick from short range to lock the game up with seven minutes left. The game reached fever-pitch as the Broncos struggled to get into position to land a field-goal, but Sam Burgess charged the ball down, before getting a penalty for a strip giving Adam Reynolds a shot from 40 metres out. Reynolds showed great composure to slot it, regaining them the lead at 28-26 and a famous victory.

LOSS 12-20
Late Changes Souths were 1-17. B.Garlick dropped off the bench. The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to the Brisbane Broncos by 20 points to 12 at Suncorp Stadium tonight (Friday), after leading six-nil at the half time break. Fatigue set in for the Rabbitohs in the final 25 minutes of the match after defending stoutly for the first 55 minutes – the Broncos crossing for four tries in the final 25 minutes to register victory. The Rabbitohs went to the half-time break leading six-nil courtesy of an Irae Simone try and conversion after just three minutes of play. The Rabbitohs bombed Broncos fullback Kodi Nikorima who spilled the ball 10 metres out from his own line. The red and green’s made the most of the mistake, crossing from the next set of six to set up the six-point lead. Both sides struggled to hold onto the ball in the first 40 minutes thanks to poor ball handling and ill-discipline. The Rabbitohs defensive performance, however, was top notch and a clean sheet at half time was well deserved. The Rabbitohs were the first to score in the second half, again taking advantage of an error from the home-side. Winger Sam Young scooped a loose ball up metres from his own goal line before racing almost 100 metres to score at the opposite end. The conversion was waved away, moving the score to 10-nil in favour of South Sydney after 48 minutes. A penalty goal to Simone from in front of the posts extended the Rabbitohs’ lead to 12 after 52 minutes. But the Broncos registered their first points in the 58th minute when winger Elijah Alick crossed in the right-hand corner. The conversion attempt was waved away, reducing the Broncos’ deficit to eight points. The home-side crossed for their second try six minutes later through second rower Brett Greinke, but the conversion attempt hit the upright and bounced away, taking the scores to 12-8 in favour of the Rabbitohs with 15 minutes remaining in the match. The Broncos took the lead for the first time in the 70th minute when Brandon Lee crashed over next to the posts, and Jayden Nikorima converted to give Brisbane a 14-12 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. The Broncos sealed the win with a length of the field effort from Kodi Nikorima following an error from South Sydney in the 77th minute, with Jayden Nikorima adding the extras to seal the 20-12 win.

NSW Cup Round 8
v Wentworthville, NSO Sun Apr 27 3:00pm
LOSS 16-20
Late changes Alex Johnston, Toole, Paiaaua, Worboy and Tavita were out. Merritt started fullback, Reddy wing, O'Dare center, South five-eghth, Hyalnd prop, Jackson Garlick hooker, Lowe lock with Areaiiti starting on the bench. The Wentworthville Magpies maintained a share of the competition lead edging out North Sydney 20-16 in a wet and willing round eight battle at Bear Park. Norths crossed for four tries to three however they were ultimately undone by the steady goal kicking of Wenty half Luke Kelly who methodically slotted four from four in tricky conditions. The early signs were positive for the Bears. A clever Nathan Merritt chip kick into the corner after just two minutes almost paid dividends for Lote Tuqiri who went within an uncut pinky nail of grounding the in goal Steeden. Norths did however manage to cross for the game’s opening try eight minutes later after Ben Lowe charged down a Wentworthville clearing kick to give the Bears a red hot attacking set. A swift shift right saw the pill zing through the hands. Kurt Aldridge sent it onto Joe Uluibau who in turn found Lote Tuqiri, the big Fijian diving into the corner to register four. The rain continued to tumble and the going became mighty heavy. Attacking fortunes ebbed and flowed with neither side finding the knack to impact the scoreboard until a sudden burst of up-tempo footy saw the Magpies cross out wide late in the half. Liam Foran found Api Pewhairangi and onto Bureta Faraimo for the try. A brilliant sideline conversion from Kelly nudged Wenty ahead 6-4, a lead they held to the interval. Norths began the second period full of running and a brilliant back handed offload from prop Nat Neale put Tuqiri away on a long run. A Magpie fumble from a subsequent Bears kick ahead saw an attacking scrum for the home side from which a second man play allowed Merritt to put left winger Mark O’Dare into the Mollie Dive corner. Norths were leading 8-6 after 49 minutes when they lost Ben Lowe to the sin bin following on from a melee which erupted in front of the sticks at the southern end. His ten minute sentence would prove costly as the Magpies were able to cross twice during this period of numerical advantage. Amazing strength from Isaac Maliota saw the nuggetty back rower dive over under the crossbar with a host of red and black men draped across his back. And when Api Pewhairangi darted over, Wenty had suddenly skipped out to lead 18-8. Norths weren’t done with yet however and on the hour Blake South slipped a sweet pass onto Matt Hyland, the tireless lock forward galloped up-field, drew the fullback and O’Dare had his second. An offside penalty extended the Magpies lead to eight before Mark O’Dare claimed his third try of the half with just five minutes remaining on the clock. The try was instigated following a scything run from Rabbitoh’s legend Nathan Merritt who capped off his dash by delivering a superbly weighted grubber into the path of the well bandaged left winger O’Dare. Norths almost pulled the game out of the mud in the dying moments when Tuqiri wrapped around Joe Uluibau to set sail up-field however the play ultimately broke down and Wentworthville were able to hang on to record a gritty 20-16 win.

v Canterbury-Bankstown, Penrith Park Sat May 3 3:00pm
LOSS 20-27
Late changes A.Gray was called up into the NSW U20 SOO team and was out. Lupi, Toole and Vasek were out. Suamamoa started center. Tom Burgess and Worboys were added to the bench. Canterbury have finally won their first game under new coach Andy Patmore and their first game overall since round two in defeating the North Sydney Bears 27-20 in gloomy conditions at Sportingbet Stadium. Canterbury came out of the blocks quickly scoring in just the third minute when a shift left resulted in centre Levi Dodd breaking through the line to score from close range. The Bulldogs doubled their lead soon after in the 10th minute after the right winger Dujuan Liolevave finished off a good backline movement to score in the right corner. The Bears got themselves back into the game scoring midway through the first half after the Bears spread play out to the right from 30 metres before a flick pass from centre Joe Uluibau put winger Tui Paiaaua on a determined run to score in the right corner. Aldridge’s conversion from the sideline reduced the lead to 8-6. The Bears hit the lead soon after a Blake South grubber was regathered short of the try line by Tulsa Saumamao who was able to plunge across for the four-pointer. Aldridge’s conversion putting the Bears in front 12-8, a lead that was short-lived when Pat Templeman scored in the left corner after an errant offload was kicked ahead twice by back rower David Minute. Templeman was unable to convert leaving the game even poised at 12-12 at halftime. As was the case in the first half, the Bulldogs scored early in the second half albeit against the run of play after Jaline Graham trapped a Bears grubber kick before regathering and going 90 metres to score out wide right and with Templeman’s conversion the Bulldogs led once more 18-12. The Bulldogs scored back to back tries minutes later when a quick shift left close to the Bears tryline was finished off in style by winger Kayne Brennan to give Canterbury a 22-12 lead. The Bears proceeded to score back to back tries through a double to Uluibau who, on both occasions outmuscled his opposite number Eddie Murphy to score out wide from close range, to leave the game evenly poised once more at 22-20 with 20 minutes remaining in the match. The Bears were made to pay for some missed opportunities when a great Alaalatoa offload allowed Damien Cook to put Chris Binge on a great run to score out wide with Templeman again missing the conversion. North Sydney again applied late pressure in pursuit of the levelling try but a Templeman field goal from 10 metres out with minutes remaining ensured that the Bulldogs would take the two competition points.
