WIN 32-12
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gotten back in the winners’ circle tonight (Friday) defeating the Parramatta Eels by 32-12 in the NRL’s RiseForAlex round – Alex Johnston and Sam Burgess bagging doubles. It was a night of high emotions and solidarity at Parramatta Stadium, firstly for the RiseForAlex initative, but also owing to the moments silence observed by the 16,125 strong crowd in respect of the 27 Australians killed in the MH17 disaster. The Rabbitohs muscled up with some brutal defence in the opening exchanges that had the Eels going backwards on their own line, while with the ball in hand, the side looked equally as dangerous when an Adam Reynolds grubber-kick into the in-goal was nearly planted down for a try. But it would be the Eels who would grab first points through big back-rower, Tepai Moeroa – the forward’s lurking in the back-line paying dividends. Chris Sandow converted to make it 6-0. The Eels took control of the match but failed to capitalise with points. Lote Tuqiri then found himself on report after a suspected crusher-tackle half-way through the opening stanza. Issac Luke was making easy metres from dummy-half for the red and greens as the side fought to get onto the score-board – the little hooker earning a repeat-set through a penalty that parked Souths right on the Parra tryline. Tuqiri capitalised on the back of a well-orchestrated back-line movement to open the red and green account for the night. Adam Reynolds made a meal of the conversion attempt, leaving the score at 6-4. Three minutes from full-time, Chris Sandow managed a booming forty-twenty that put the Eels right in attacking position with Souths on the back-foot. But Dylan Walker diffused the situation with an intercept and streaking 70 metres before being collected high by Sandown in a desperate tackle. The penalty put the Rabbitohs back on the front foot with Sam Burgess streaking through to score to take the lead. Reynolds made no mistake with the conversion 15 metres in from touch to take the sides to the break at 10-6 in the Rabbitohs’ favour. On the resumption, The Eels had a try disallowed after the Parramatta player bounced the ball over the line. But it was Souths who ended up scoring at the other end of the field when Alex Johnston crossed for his eighth try of his career in eight career games. Reynolds converted to make it 16-6. Joe Picker was denied a try thanks to an obstruction during the play, before Parramatta made no mistake with one of their own with 22 minutes left in the match, with Joseph Paulo grabbing the points. Sandown converted to make it 16-12 in the Rabbitohs’ favour. With 17 minutes remaining, halfback Adam Reynolds was substituted for Luke Keary, who with only his second touch hoisted a well-placed cross-field bomb that landed in Kyle Turner’s hands for the young gun to score. Dylan Walker was handed kicking duties with Reynolds off the pitch, but the centre was unsuccessful with the attempt. It mattered little though, because with seven and a half minutes left, speedster Alex Johnston outpaced Vai Toutai on the fringe before racing over to score his second of the night and his ninth in eight games. Issac Luke backed up his strong performance by converting the try from right on the touch-line to all but seal the game at 26-12. Chris Sandow did his side no favours from the kick-off when his short kick-off went awry – failing to travel the required ten metres. The Rabbitohs took full advantage, with Sam Burgess sneaking across from dummy half right under the sticks with four minutes remaining. Luke converted from in front to make it 32-12

The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side have gone down to the Parramatta Eels by 40-26 at Parramatta Stadium tonight (Friday). With five minutes left on the clock, it was a ten-point ball-game with the Rabbitohs looking promising within striking distance. But the top-four Eels would prove too strong for a resilient Rabbitohs outfit. It took just four minutes for the Eels to get on the score-board with a deft inside pass close to the line allowing Josh Aloia to barge over. Halfback Zach Dockar-Clay converted from out wide to make it 6-0. Just two minutes later, the Eels were at it again when winger Leva Li picked up a loose ball before proceeding to expose the Rabbitohs’ lack of number on the short side to score. Dockar-Clay’s conversion attempt hit the upright from an almost identical position to the previous try to leave the score at 10-0. The Rabbitohs wouldn’t be outdone though. After some strong running in mid-field, a penalty close to the line to the red and greens allowed winger Tom Hughes to carry two Eels over the try-line with him to open Souths’ account for the evening 20 metres in from touch. Irae Simone sprayed the conversion attempt to make it 10-4. On the resumption though, Parramatta got the ball straight back from the kick-off after the ball was allowed to go over the touch-line on the bounce, allowing Leva Li to grab his second of the night. Docker-Clay’s boots were certainly accurate, but only in so far as they found the Parramatta Stadium upright for the second successive attempt. Eels Replacement forward Jordan Muna powered over the try-line to score under the sticks. Docker-Clay added the extras right at the half-way point of the first stanza to make it 20-4 in favour of the home-side. Things got worse for the Rabbitohs when they found themselves down to 12 men when a Rabbitohs player was sin-binned for a professional foul. The Eels capitalised immediately when other winger Halauafu Lavaka crossed to make the score 24-4. As the first period came to a close the Rabbitohs managed to lessen the deficit through John Olive who crashed over out wide. Simone showed composure to convert a difficult kick from the sideline. The Rabbitohs got off to a positive start in the second half with Brad Wall scoring after a grubber in-goal from Olive was knocked on by a Parra player. Devon Makoare-Boyce converted to make it 24-16 The comeback was short-lived as the Eels scored through Tyrell Fuimaono who collected a high ball and went over. Dockar-Clay made no mistake with the conversion. Parramatta backed it up mere minutes later when Leva li bagged a hat-trick, with Docker-Clay converting from the touch-line. It was a case of tit-for-tat in the following minutes, with the Rabbitohs responding through Captain Cameron McInnes, who barged through from dummy-half. Makoare-Boyce converted to make it 36-22. But Makoare-Boyce would also add his name to the try-scorers list eight minutes from full-time in outstanding fashion, when he toed through a loose ball before re-gathering and scoring to make it a 10 point ball-game. But with two minutes left, the Eels put the result beyond doubt with Halauafu Lavaka grabbing his second of the night to make it 40-26.

The Illawarra Cutters have continued their charge up the VB NSW Cup table, knocking off the North Sydney Bears 26-12 in cold and windy conditions at North Sydney Oval. Going up against the best defensive side in the competition, the Bears added experienced first graders Luke Burgess, Apisai Koroisau and Bryson Goodwin to their line-up pre-match, as they desperately looked to avoid their eighth straight loss. While North Sydney occupied the majority of the possession in the opening quarter of the match, it was the Cutters who scored first points in the 20th minute, when Dylan Farrell put Yaw Kiti Glymin over on the right edge. Kicking from the eastern sideline, Kyle Stanley was unable to convert, leaving the score at 4-0 after 21 minutes. Despite North Sydney holding up Illawarra in the in-goal on back to back plays, it was interchange player Josh Ailaomai who provided the spark for the Cutters, getting his right arm free before passing the ball away to second rower Chris Lewis, who went over for his first of the afternoon. This time from the opposite side of the field, Stanley was again unable to add the extras, keeping the score at 8-0 after 33 minutes and leaving the door very much open for a North Sydney comeback. The Bears did just that two minutes later, when Koroisau put Chris Grevsmuhl over just to the left of the uprights, before Goodwin's conversion brought North Sydney back to within two points right on half time. The versatility of Luke Burgess was shown just after the break, when the 27 year old burrowed his way over from dummy half to give the Bears their first points of the game, before Goodwin pushed the score out to 12-8 following the conversion five minutes into the second half. Once again, a poor passage of play by North Sydney gave the Cutters ideal field position, when Lewis passed inside to Joel Johnson in the 55th minute, giving the visitors a 14-12 lead following Sam Duggan's conversion. The Bears looked certain to take back the lead five minutes later when they created a big overlap out on the right flank, with winger Mark O'Dare diving over before the touch judge put his flag up. The Cutters used the wind to their advantage five minutes before full time, kicking a 40/20, before Duggan linked up with fullback Kyle Eather who dived over 20 metres in from touch, leaving Stanley an easy conversion to extend Illawarra's lead out to 20-12 with four minutes remaining. Chris Lewis capped off a best of ground performance with his second try of the game courtesy of a pass from Duggan, before Stanley's conversion after the siren gave the Cutters a comprehensive 26-12 victory. The win for Illawarra sees them jump up to third position ahead of the Wests Tigers thanks to their superior for and against, while North Sydney's eighth straight loss sees them anchored at the bottom of the competition table.
