LOSS 10-16

A brave effort from the South Sydney Rabbitohs wasn't enough to claim victory at Bluebet Stadium, falling 16-10 against the Penrith Panthers in an intense contest. South Sydney's efforts throughout the match were gallant, with a late fightback with tries to Alex Johnston and Isaiah Tass bringing the side to a converted try in the final minute. Ill discipline, however, cruelled the Rabbitohs throughout the contest, conceding 7 penalties and making 13 errors in what was a disappointing result for the highly-anticipated contest. Latrell Mitchell marked his 50th appearance in the famous Red and Green with a hand in both tries, while front rower Thomas Burgess joined legendary second rower Bob McCarthy on 211 first-grade appearances for the Club. A wayward bounce from a kick chase saved Souths from conceding first points, but the Panthers took their opportunity second time round with Stephen Crichton diving over in the corner in the 3rd minute. A strong hit from Burgess and Michael Chee-Kam forced an error, however, the Rabbitohs' momentum was halted as a dubious strip by Nathan Cleary was overturned via a Captain's Challenge. Following a fast and intense first quarter of the match, neither team looked at letting up, but another dubious call from a short line drop out handed Penrith possession on the line, and the weight of possession saw Luke Garner destined to touch down over the line. That was until a herculean effort from Latrell Mitchell forced the ball free as the second rower got to ground, denying Penrith further points and resulting in one of the plays of the game. Cleary's attempt at a 40/20 fell short with half-time looming, and following a fifth tackle penalty, the Rabbitohs opted to make a Captain's Challenge of their own, successfully preventing the Panthers from claiming a further two points. A rampaging run from Mitchell saw the Red and Green in prime position to strike back, however, right on the stroke of half-time Penrith manufactured a miracle with Izack Tago bringing the scoreline to 10-nil. Not deterred by their recent setback, the Rabbitohs hit the ground running in the second stanza, however, the weight of possession allowed the home side to extend their lead through a penalty goal. Ill discipline and poor handling cruelled the Rabbitohs with a follow-up penalty giving Penrith more territory as Brian To'o crossed in the corner to give the Panthers a 16-point difference with half an hour remaining. Continuing to battle through adversity, the men from Redfern needed a spark in the dying stages of the contest, and it was Mitchell and Walker providing on the left side to put Alex Johnston in for his first try of the season. The duo were at the forefront of the Rabbitohs' next try, with a flurry of passes putting Isaiah Tass over after as the centre kicked ahead for himself to score, with a glimmer of hope still remaining. Mitchell struck the conversion from the sideline to bring the difference to just six points in the final minute, however, the final bounce of the ball went against the Rabbitohs as Penrith claimed a 16-10 victory.

Reserve Grade - Knock-On Effect NSW Premiership Round 2

v Penrith, 5:20pm

LOSS 20-30

Late Changes - Hardman is out. Hodge starts at prop, Gray on the bench, Chan-Foon is the concussion sub. The South Sydney Rabbitohs NSW Cup side's gutsy effort saw them come within a try of defeating the Penrith Panthers at Panthers Stadium, before falling short 30-20 in an entertaining contest. Without a number of players who featured in the NRL match, and down to their third-string halves, the Rabbitohs could have made plenty of excuses but took the Premiers right down to the wire. After the hosts opened with two quick tries, the Red and Green opened through backrower Ethan O'Neill, who collected his second try in as many weeks, before the Panthers raced to a 22-6 lead at the break. Not deterred by the scoreline, the Rabbitohs rallied with a quarter of the match remaining with two quickfire tries to Captain Tom Carr, and although the Panthers took an eight-point lead, a four-pointer to backrower Ben Lovett gave the side a glimmer of hope in the dying stages. With minutes remaining, the home side pounced under the posts to seal their victory.

NSWRL U21 Jersey Flegg - Round 2

v Penrith, Sat Mar 11 2:45pm

WIN 17-16

Late Changes - Paki is out. Donnelly is the concussion sub. The South Sydney Rabbitohs Jersey Flegg sealed a resounding 17-16 victory over last year's Premiers, with a field goal securing the two points in a frantic match at Penrith Stadium. In a see-sawing contest, the home side opened the scoring before Carson Caho struck back for the Cardinal and Myrtle, and while the Panthers edged ahead soon after, a try to Jaxson Rahme saw the Rabbitohs level the scores at 10-all. With a minute remaining in the first half, a field goal to halfback Joseph Nohra proved to be vital as the visitors headed into the sheds with a one-point advantage. Winger Deijion Leugaimafa scored the first from the break before a penalty goal saw the lead extend to seven, with the hosts striking late to bring the scoreline back to just a solitary point. But after showing plenty of tenacity throughout the second half, the Rabbitohs' hard work paid off as they hung on to record a famous 17-16 win and open their account for 2023.

NSWRL U19 SG Ball Cup - Round 6

v Penrith, Sat Mar 10 1:00pm

LOSS 22-40

Late changes - Wright and Juras are out. Laing starts at centre, McLaren on the wing, Matakaiongo at prop, Smith at hooker, Herring and Sele on the bench. Mailietoa is the concussion sub. It was another tough outing for the Rabbitohs SG Ball side, but it wasn't without an incredibly brave effort under plenty of adversity, downed by the Penrith Panthers 40-22 in very trying circumstances. Up against the 2022 Premiers, the Rabbitohs rallied after a strong first half which saw them take an impressive 16-12 lead at the break thanks to tries from Ryan Casey, Dane Towns and Thomas Fletcher. Winger Cooper McLaren opened the scoring just minutes from resumption for a 22-12 lead, but yet another sidelined player saw the Rabbitohs down a man for the majority of the second stanza. But disaster struck when their torrid run of injuries continued, down to just their starting thirteen heading into the second half with four players taken from the field. Gray re-injured his hamstring. Souths finished the game with 12 men after a number of injuries. Although their opponents took advantage of the difference in numbers to claim victory, it was a courageous effort from the luckless Rabbitohs, who did an incredible job to keep the scoreline to within three converted tries.

NSWRL U17 Matthews Cup - Round 6

v Penrith, 11:30am

DRAW 24-24

Late changes - Falloon is the concussion sub. In a hard and fast contest at Penrith Stadium, the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Penrith Panthers were unable to be split at full-time in a 24-all draw in Round 6 of the Harold Matthews Cup. The Rabbitohs struck back through Braethan Bilich after the Panthers opened the scoring, and while the hosts crossed the line next to take a half-time lead, the Cardinal and Myrtle were right in the contest. Leveling up through Captain Daniel Lua right after the break, the Panthers looked to turn the screws with a two-try lead, but the resilient Rabbitohs hit back with a late flurry as Jacob Fong touched down before Lua bagged his brace. With just one minute remaining on the clock, the Rabbitohs were cruelly denied victory after a penalty goal attempt 40 metres out saw the Steeden hit the posts, and with the flags waved away, their courageous effort just fell short as they settled for a 24-all draw.

Maxwell-Puohotaua is the concussion sub. The South Sydney Rabbitohs were dealt a tough lesson in Round 6 of the Tarsha Gale Cup, defeated by the Penrith Panthers 28-nil. After a strong defensive effort in the first half, the Red and Green trailed by just eight points at the break in the sweltering Penrith heat and headed back onto the field still within the contest. Unfortunately, errors ultimately cruelled the side throughout the match to halt their momentum, with the Panthers running away with four tries in the second stanza to take the two competition points.
