Injury Crisis
Injuries continue to mount as we have another 4 injuries. That takes our tally to 15 injured this week. It was another game where we fell away in the last 20 minutes. Fitness continues to be our major issue in 2024. It was a makeshift team as injuries mounted, with second rowers playing, centre, centres on the wing and fullback. There is so much work to do just to return to being a competitive team. Now its off to play the dragons with 3 debutants, but with a full week to prepare.
Hornby Era begins
Time to bring out your train sets, the Hornby era has begun. He had 2 days to prepare last weeks team, this week he has a full week to prepare. Lets see what sort of changes he and Furner can bring to the rest of our season.
Teaupa and French rewarded
As first grade team rolls out the injuries, it becomes next man up. This week its two of reserve grade premiership winning players in Dion Teupa at halfback and Matt French on the bench. Good luck to both players, as they get their reward for a lot of hard work to date.
Son of a Gun - Field and Trindall
Two familiar surnames are popping up recently. Jack Field in U21s and Jake Trindall in Reserve Grade, who are the sons of Craig Field and Darrell Trindall from the 90s. Good luck to both as they begin their South Sydney senior grade career.
NRL Top 30 fails in real Injury Crisis
One major issue in the the way the Salary Cap and Top 30 squads rule are today, is when you have injuries. If you have two injuries in the same position, like we have with halfback, you cannot pick next best player in the squad. You have to seek permission from the NRL to play the next best player or either play players out of position. South Sydney no longer have the option of playing players out of position with 15 players injured and further 4 suspended. With only 11 players left in the Top 30 squad we are going out to fringe reserve graders and Qld Cup to try field a team this week. Its ludicrus.
Round 9 - Stat Attack
Statistically it was poor game again this week. Completions dropped to 78% from 84% last week. Errors improved to 7 from 8 last week. We gave away 8 penalties and 4 6-again calls from 10 last week. Souths Effective 1st tackle improved but still in a poor level of 36.6m from 38.5m last week. Our missed tackles improved to a average level of 33 from 42 last week. Opposition offloads improved to 9 from 17 last week.
Looking at our left side defence - Thompson-Wighton/Murray-Walker/Wighton-Host (1-4-4-2) dropped to 11 from 10 missed tackles last week. On the right side Tass-CheeKam-Hawkins/Walker-Koloamatangi (1-3-2-2) improved to 8 from 10 last week. Ruck defence Arrow/Burgess-Cook/Mamouzelos-Moale/Keppie-Murray/Havili (5-3-3-3) improved to 14 from 22 missed tackles last week.
Our go forward dropped to 1136m from 1394m last week. Our worst all year. With our props made a very poor 339m compared to 314m last week. No one made 10+m per run. Arrow and Murray made 100+m in the match. Defensively Koloamatangi was our best in the tackling raking up 43 tackles. Moale, JGray and DHawkins didn't miss a tackle.
