WIN 28-18
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have secured their third win of the season, defeating the Penrith Panthers 28-18 off the back of an incredible first-half ambush. Keaon Koloamatangi lead the way for the Red and Green with a first half double and some huge efforts in defence. Cody Walker was instrumental pulling the strings on the left edge in attack, while Jye Gray was impressive on both sides of the ball. The Rabbitohs raced out of the gates at full speed to find themselves up 10-0 after as many minutes. They refused to release the pressure on Penrith, dominating their way to a 28-0 lead at the break. The second half saw some simple errors creep into the Rabbitohs’ game, which cost them further opportunities later in the contest, while an improved second half effort from Penrith saw them put some respectability into the final score. South Sydney signalled their intent from the get-go when they fired an early warning shot down the left hand side. Returning winger Alex Johnston found space on the wing, and then kicked back infield to force a drop out from the Panthers. The Rabbitohs then opened the scoring in the very next set, with Walker threading a perfectly-weighted grubber through the line for Koloamatangi to capitalise on. It would be just a few minutes before South Sydney would produce more points, this time with a left-side raid through the hands which saw Alex Johnston score his 196th NRL try with a spectacular put-down in the corner. South Sydney extended their lead to 12-0 thanks to a penalty kick from Jamie Humphreys in the 26th minute. The ensuing kick off saw Penrith kick dead on the full, leading to more possession in the attacking zone for South Sydney. They capitalised immediately, with Koloamatangi forcing his way over for his second try of the game. The Rabbitohs then drew further ahead in the 33rd minute, this time through Davvy Moale who combined with Peter Mamouzelos on a crash play from close range to score next to the posts. Already in possession of a very comfortable lead, the Rabbitohs managed to score one last try before half time. This time it was fullback Jye Gray who caught the Penrith defenders napping with a sneaky solo effort out of dummy half. South Sydney going into the break with a comanding 28 nil lead.
The Rabbitohs suffered a significant setback during the break, with Johnston not returning to the field for the second half. He had unfortunately succumbed to a suspected shoulder injury sustained in the act of scoring in the 10th minute after playing through the pain for half an hour. This forced Wayne Bennett to shuffle the deck, with Isaiah Tass moving to the left wing to replace Johnston, while Jayden Sullivan came off the bench to take Tass’s spot at right centre. It was the Panthers who started the second half the stronger of the two sides, scoring their first try of the game in the 47th minute through Liam Martin. They then reduced the deficit to 16 points with a try to Brad Schneider just ten minutes later. The Panthers had a number of opportunities to press their comeback, with Moses Leota denied by the Bunker in the 63rd minute in an effort that would have made for a very stressful final 15 minutes for South Sydney. The comeback was not to be however, and although Penrith managed one last try to Jack Cole just seconds before full time when the match was out of reach, South Sydney were able to hang on for a famous victory over the four-time defending premiers.

LOSS 22-26
Late Changes - Ngatikaura is the concussion sub. The Penrith Panthers have held off a fast-finishing effort from the South Sydney Rabbitohs to record their third win in succession, 26-22 this afternoon at a rain-soaked Redfern Oval. The Panthers, having dominated the first half to lead 16-6, before extending that lead to 20-6 early were forced to withstand a second half comeback from the Rabbitohs that saw the hosts at one point trail 20-18. A Matt Eisenhuth try with ten minutes to go gave the Panthers some breathing space at 26-18 but when Ashton Ward scored with a minute remaining to reduce the gap to four, it took David Fale’s kick smother on the last play of the game to finally secure the two competition points for the visitors. But it would be Penrith who off an early Souths error inside their own half, scored first through Blaize Talagi, with the five-eighth crashing over from close range to score out wide, missing his own conversion attempt to have the visitors up 4-0 after five minutes of play. However, a Penrith error in the following set inside their own half invited Souths to hit back straight away when half Lewis Dodd put through a deft kick at the try-line for his fullback, Fletcher Myers to come through and regather to score and with five-eighth Ashton Ward’s successful conversion, the home side led 6-4 after 10 minutes. Penrith would soon regain the lead when a cross-field kick inside the Souths 20 was unable to fielded by the Rabbitohs and back-rower Harry Hassett was on the spot to swoop on the loose ball to score out wide and with Talagi’s conversion, the Panthers led 10-6 after just 14 minutes of play. A Lewis Dodd kick charge down when in good attacking position was regathered by Penrith allowing the visitors to go 80 metres in two plays to score. A quick play the ball enabling winger Jesse McLean to make a long line break straight up the middle of Redfern Oval being tackled 20m out with fullback Jaxson Edgar unmarked in support. But the missed opportunity didn’t matter as a quick shift left where Penrith had all the numbers, allowed winger Asu Kapaoa to score next to the posts to extend the visitors lead out to 16-6 after 24 minutes. Back-to-back penalties late in the half, put Souths on attack inside Penrith’s 20 but again another error when in good attacking position let Penrith off the hook and head into half-time leading 16-6. Panthers were back on attack 20m out with hooker Luke Sommerton able to get a sublime pass away to Mavrik Geyer, as he was falling to the ground, who shifted left to Hassett, who found David Fale in support and the centre acrobatically put the ball over in the north-west corner to evade the cover defence and extend the lead out to 20-6 after 50 minutes. An error from the kick-off compounded by penalty conceded inside their own 20, allowed the Rabbitohs to quickly hit back with a try to centre Carson Kaho, who was on hand to ground Dane O’Donnell’s deft grubber kick from close range and with Ward converting from out wide, the home side suddenly trailed 20-12 after 55 minutes. The Rabbitohs made it back-to-back tries when an offload from Jaxson Edgar to support backfired badly for Penrith, with centre Talanoa Penitani stripping the ball and finding an unmarked winger, Dane Towns to score next to the posts to reduce the gap to 20-18. An error from Souths put Penrith on attack, and they once again capitalised when a Billy Scott kick from dummy half allowed Matt Eisenhuth to pounce on the kick to score behind the posts and with Talagi’s simple conversion, the visitors once again enjoyed a handy 26-18 lead with 10 minutes remaining. But a penalty enabled Souths to once again bridge the gap to within four and set up a thrilling last minute of play, when Ward produced a fine individual effort to score next to the posts from close range in the 79th minute. But despite Souths best endeavours to score on the last play of the game, Fale’s smother of a kick ahead enabled the Panthers to hang on for an important 26-22 win.

LOSS 26-30
Late Changes - Rugless is out. Geary start in the centre. Gallo is the concussion sub. Hawkins drops off the bench. Sprague went down in the opening tackle with a knee injury. This caused a reshuffle of the team. Bailey to fullback, Quinn to five-eighth, Taylor to half and Frame to hooker. Penrith open the scoring from a dummy half try. 12 minutes later South Sydney hit back with their own dummy half try under the posts by Frame. In the next set South Sydney go back to back from a bomb by Quinn that sees Mellar catch the high ball and offload to Taylor who scored. A dubious penalty gave Penrith field position and they hit back immediately. Late in the half, Penrith once again got some field position and they scored out wide. Half time 10 to 18. Second half started with South Sydney getting some field position and scoring out wide through Waqa off some quick passing. Penrith hit back again going down their left side. South Sydney refused to give up and Frame again crosses from dummy half to bring South Sydney within 2 points with 10 minutes to go. v Warriors, Redfern Oval, Sun Mar 30 11:00am [BAR TV]
DRAW 16-16
Late Changes - Humphries starts at half, Slate on the bench. Nosa is the concussion. Moses and Mann drop off the bench. Moments before kickoff a passing heavy shower came through. South Sydney struggled to stop the offload, which allowed the Warriors to open the scoring. More errors gave the Warriors field position where the eventually scored again. It was dominate half on the back of errors from South Sydney as they go into the break 10 nil. With the sun now shinny in the second half, Immediately after the break a dropped ball saw South Sydney have field poition and Keung crashed over, as the Rabbitohs hit back. Sustained pressure saw South Sydney in again as Jennings crossed from dummy half, as South Sydney took the lead 12 to 10. But after a number of errors the Warriors had field position and scored to take back the lead. Late in the game a well worked scrum move saw Poynton score out wide, but the conversion goes wide. Humphries had a few late field goal attempts, but the game ended in a draw 16 all.

NSWRL Womens U17 Lisa Fiaola Cup - Round 8
v Canberra, 1:00pm [BAR TV]
LOSS 0-30
Late Changes - Canberra opened the scoring with a passing movement down through their right side attack. A dropped ball gave Canberra a chance and a worked move at the scrum saw them score under the posts. After South Sydney had been denied a try, Canberra rolled up the other end and scored. Halftime 16 nil to Canberra. Canberra opened the scoring in the second half after a spate of errors. A great run by Polu from South Sydney sees her cut short of the tryline. But two more tries to Canberra sees the final result 30 nil to Canberra.
