Young Guns Hitout
The year begins with a hit out lead by our fringe NRL squad. The match started well as we led 18-4 but the team faded towards the end of the first half. Fitness was a contributer as many players were playing the first big game after returning from injury. But overall will be better for the hitout and only losing after a try was scored while having on 12 men on the field Now off to Mudgee for the annual Charity Shield in what is going to be a scorcher.
Dion Teaupa 2 tries on debut
Out of the blue Dion Teapa has made a instant name for himself with a great first grade debut. His quality ball play was immediately on show as he setup a try and scored two tries. He is a SG Ball U19 players who will step up into U21s this year. Going to keep an eye on this kid during the year.
Captain CodyOver the ditch Cody Walker was rewarded by being given the captaincy role with the Indigenous team. He also started his coaching career by stepping in as assistant. It was a proud moment when he held up the trophy.
Fletcher call up
This week Thomas Fletcher has been the latest player called up into the Charity Shield. He has done well on the edge in his strong defence in the SG Ball. And he gets rewarded by a call up into this weekend's Charity Shield team.
Munro double
Tyrone Munro continue to look very good in the SG Ball squad. This week he moved to fullback and chimed in for two very good tries. I expect he will step up into the pathways again this year.
Mann double
Charlie Mann was another to have good game in the Matts game. He scored two great tries using his speed out wide. He is one to watch as the year progresses.
Pre-Season Challenge Bonus Points
2023 saw the introduction of Bonus competition points in the pre-season. What we have seen is the Union 5 try bonus point, but new others. 5 Lie Breaks and 10 offloads. What you find is that Line Breaks has been very similar to tries scored, as in many cases a line break occurs when a try is scored. Offloads was a interesting choice, as better teams coach to minimise errors which also means a reduction of offloads. In most cases quality tries do not result in many offloads, but a mistake riddled game has many offloads. The bonus points have helped breakup the comp, but teams later in the round 2 draw on Sunday have a clear advantage on getting a bonus point ineeded to win the competition.
