LOSS 18-28

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have been unable to overcome arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium in Round 3 in a two-point contest. In an entertaining match that saw the ball continually go from end-to-end, the Rabbitohs shot out to a 10-point lead but were unable to capitalise on their early momentum with errors cruelling them throughout. Launching an audacious comeback in the final ten minutes, the Rabbitohs scored a try through Izaac Tu'itupou Thompson before an attempted two-point field goal by Latrell Mitchell fell agonisingly short. Front rower Thomas Burgess created history with his 212th match in the famous Red and Green, leapfrogging legendary second rower Bob McCarthy into fourth place on the Club's-all time appearance record. The Rabbitohs were dealt a cruel blow in the first minute of the match as the returning Hame Sele was taken from the field for a Head Injury Assessment, but were far from deterred as they gained early momentum through a Cody Walker drop out. It wasn't long before halves partner Lachlan Ilias announced himself into the match, showing some silky skills to send Keaon Kolamatangi over for the first try just seven minutes in. The defensive resolve shone as Isaiah Tass and Walker combined to force the ball from Joseph Manu over the line, and on the other end of the field Latrell Mitchell sent Alex Johnston through just moments later with a beautifully timed cut-out pass for a 10-nil lead. Campbell Graham rocked fellow Egan Butcher to force the ball free, while the Rabbitohs came close to scoring once more after Cameron Murray burst through the backfield before a dropped ball invited their opponents back into the contest. Another kick from Walker troubled the Roosters again as Johnston went inches from touching once more, while a failed Captain's Challenge saw the Roosters back with possession after a short drop out resulted in an error from Souths. The Roosters struck back in quick succession following the decision, first scoring in the 33rd minute through Brandon Smith, before a chip over the top sent Daniel Tupou over to level the scores at the back end of the first half. But Rabbitohs didn't go down die wondering, however, with a clever one-on-one strip from Cameron Murray regaining possession from the kick-off before Mitchell calmly slotted a penalty goal on the stroke of half-time for a 12-10 lead. Souths shot out of the blocks once again on the right, with a clever flick pass from Koloamatangi sending Campbell Graham through, but the Rabbitohs were unable to capitalise on their early advantage. Mitchell tiptoed the line to prevent a 40/20 kick, but it was the case of another error and another try for the Roosters, with Jaxson Paulo reaching out to score as the Rabbitohs trailed by four after 48 minutes. Ill-discipline continued to cruel the side but after holding up James Tedesco over the line on last tackle, the Cardinal and Myrtle got back to work through the middle third, with Jed Cartwright entering the fray with a huge hit on Smith. Both combatants traded errors as fatigue crept in, with neither quite able to gain momentum in the final quarter of the contest as tension flared when Fletcher Baker's shoulder made contact with Campbell Graham's head. Another chance went begging as Mitchell sent Johnston through again, and with metres between Tass and the line, a stray arm forced the ball free in another blow to the Red and Green. Easts struck through Paulo once again for an 8-point lead, but Souths continued to trouble their opponents out wide, with tempers flaring in the final few minutes as both Joseph Manu and Michael Chee-Kam were sent to the sin bin. Taking a chance to bring the difference to a converted try, a penalty goal from Mitchell swung wide, and a daring play on the sideline saw Izaac Tu'itupou Thompson fly over to score in the corner and give his side a glimmer of hope. A calmly-slotted sideline conversion offered the Rabbitohs a chance to kick a two-point field goal to tie the scores in the final set of play, only for the fullback's attempt to fall agonisingly short, with the final scoreboard reading 20-18. Tatola suffered a MCL knee injury while Shaq Mitchell suffered a broken bone in his foot.

v Sydney Roosters, Wentworth Park, Sun Mar 19 3:15pm

LOSS 16-38

Late Changes - Kalo Kalo is out. Taaffe starts fullback. Giles is the concussion sub. It was a disappointing result for the NSW Cup side on the weekend, unable to overcome last placed arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters who claimed a 38-16 victory at Wentworth Park in Glebe. The two foundation clubs did battle for the first time at NSW Cup level since 2005 under the Rabbitohs and Roosters banners respectively, with the occasion all the more special being played at one of the original venues of the competition. Unfortunately for the Red and Green, however, a first-half double to Peter Mamouzelos wasn't enough for the side to gain momentum, with errors and penalties playing a part in the loss.

NSWRL U21 Jersey Flegg - Round 3

v Sydney Roosters, Sat Mar 17 1:30pm

LOSS 20-30

Late Changes - Bray and Donnelly are out. Kalo Kalo starts fullback, Di Bartolo at five-eighth and Paki is the concussion sub. A second-half surge wasn't enough for the Jersey Flegg Cup Rabbitohs, who were downed 30-20 against the Sydney Roosters prior to the NSW Cup match at Wentworth Park. The Roosters showed why they are in first place on the ladder, shooting out to a 20-nil lead with the Red and Green found themselves needing to climb a mountain in the second half, with Louis Grossemy getting the ball rolling with a try two minutes on resumption. A Roosters sin-binning opened up a further opportunity for points, with Carson Kaho and Dranza Hawe-De-Thierry adding their name to the scoresheet, while young forward Thomas Fletcher marked his Flegg debut with a try. Te Hau injured his ankle.

NSWRL U19 SG Ball Cup - Round 7

v Balmain, Redfern Oval, Sat Mar 18 12:00pm [NSWRL TV]

LOSS 20-26

Late changes - Risati and Laig are out Smith starts at hooker, Matakaingo at prop, Sele and Herring on the bench. Aarons is the concussion sub. It was yet another tough week for the SG Ball Rabbitohs side, who were pipped at the death by the Balmain Tigers 26-20 at Redfern Oval in Round 7. With the finals out of reach following an adversity-filled season, the match it proved to be an opportunity for a number of young Rabbitohs to make the step up to the under 19s competition. Brent Hawkins (younger brother of NRL squad member Dean) scored the first try for South Sydney, before Oliver Juras touched down as the sides were unable to be separated at half-time with the scores locked at 10-apiece. Both teams were reduced to twelve men 55 minutes in as they continued to go back and forth, and although a double to Daniel Wright saw the Rabbitohs come within two points, a try in the final minute handed the Tigers victory.

NSWRL U17 Matthews Cup - Round 7

v Balmain, 10:30am [NSWRL TV]

WIN 22-10

Late changes - Mersal, Fallon drop off the bench. Moses is the concussion sub. The Harold Matthews side has rounded off a strong month with a win and two draws against powerhouse sides to claim a twelve-point victory over Balmain at Redfern Oval. While it took over 20 minutes for the scoreboard to tick over, it was the young Rabbitohs to cross first through winger Charlie Mann and were quick to back up their efforts through Marshall Le Maitre for a 10-point advantage at the break. A sin-binning right after half-time saw the Red and Green strike with quick succession as Mann bagged his second before Philip Sosaiete touched down as they took a commanding 22-nil lead. Despite the Tigers crossing for two late tries, the result was never in doubt as the Rabbitohs continued their charge for a finals spot with two regular season matches in hand.

NSWRL Womens U19 Tarsha Gale Cup - Round 7

v Sydney Indigenous Academy, 1:30pm [NSWRL TV]

LOSS 0-44

Late changes - Taufa and Duckett are out. Mundine starts prop, Widders second row, Rasaku and Tapuai on the bench. Maile is the concussion sub. The Tarsha Gale Cup side was dealt a tough lesson on Saturday afternoon in a 44-nil defeat at Redfern Oval by the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy. Up against the defending Premiers sitting in first place, the Red and Greens were under pressure early following two tries in the first fifteen minutes, with a sin-binning soon after leading to a 28-nil scoreline at the break. With player depth tested throughout the season and the match, the Rabbitohs were unable to overcome their opponents, who scored a further three tries in the second stanza to run away with the result.
