LOSS 20-36

A poor defensive second half has saw the South Sydney Rabbitohs downed by the Brisbane Broncos 36-20 at Sunshine Coast Stadium. An early raid and territory from Brisbane netted an incredible try-saver from Cody Walker to deny Kotoni Staggs as the visitors sounded out a warning. They immediately responded, marching downfield on the back of a penalty and the left side again coming to the fore, with Walker combining with Blake Taaffe to put Alex Johnston into space before he stepped inside to open the scoring through six minutes. A fumble from the ensuing set gave the Broncos prime field position, and on the back of a set restart were able to tie the scores at 6-all through Staggs. The extraordinary start to the game continued when Martin Taupau was sent to the sin bin for lifting his knees from the kick-off, giving the Rabbitohs an advantage for the next 10 minutes and an 8-6 lead after Taaffe slotted the shot at penalty goal. Souths couldn’t take any further advantage, and the Broncos made them pay, with Selwyn Cobbo seeing open space to give them their first lead in the 24th minute. Tensions flared between the two sides throughout the middle stages of the first half, before the Rabbitohs had the dream finish, As the siren sounded, an inside ball from Damien Cook to Campbell Graham saw the star centre crash over and give them a 14-12 advantage at the break. In similar fashion to the opening half, Brisbane had a golden opportunity to post first points four minutes into the half, only for Johnston to deny a flying Reece Walsh by putting him over the sideline. It didn’t take long for Walsh to have his try, giving the Broncos the lead through 51 minutes after splitting the defence with ease. The task became harder when the deficit was stretched to 24-14 after Xavier Willison barged his way over from close range with 22 minutes remaining. Another mistake deep in their own territory proved costly as the Broncos added another try and Staggs bagged his second to set an almost impossible challenge, trailing by 16 with 17 minutes to play. A late shot from Jesse Arthars saw him sent to the sin bin, and the numbers came up trumps on the next set with Walker putting Isaiah Tass over to give them a hope at 30-20 to set up an intriguing final 10 minutes. The comeback hopes were dashed soon after however, as Adam Reynolds crossed to seal the game.

WIN 34-16

Late Changes - Moale, Duncan, Knight and Makelim are out. Gray and Gordon start prop. S.Mitchell at lock, Rahme, Alvardo and Swann on the bench. Grossemy is the concussion sub. The South Sydney Rabbitohs hosted the Newcastle Knights in Round 21 of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, producing a dominant 34-16 win to move to seventh place on the competition ladder. The hosts struck first when a right-edge shift found winger Leonard Skelton, who sped down the blindside and dived in the corner to score his third try of the season. Captain Dean Hawkins converted to make the score 6-0. The travelling Knights bounced back after sustained pressure on the Rabbitohs’ defensive line, where hooker Riley Jones found front-rower John Toleafoa to crash over the try-line for Newcastle’ first points of the day. Lachlan Miller converted from directly in front to level the scores at 6-6. South Sydney’s right edge was in full force once again, into the hands of centre Joseph Karapani to score his first try of the day. The Knights responded quickly on the stroke of halftime as Lachlan Miller snatched an intercept and sprinted 70 metres to score in the corner. Miller missed his conversion to the left as the Rabbitohs led 12-10 at halftime. South Sydney opened the scoring just minutes into the second half, when Dean Hawkins found back-rower Jed Cartwright to bash his way through the Newcastle defence for a try. South Sydney added another try midway through the second half through their skipper. Hawkins took the ball down the right edge, threw a dummy and ran through the gap for a four-pointer, converting his own try to extend the lead to 24-10. It was all South Sydney at Redfern Oval when Jed Cartwright had the ball once again, stepping past the last defender to run around the posts and score his second of the day. The Knights bounced back with a try as five-eighth Miller set up front-rower Sebastian Su’a, who stormed through the gap to score. Miller converted to bring the score to 30-16. The Rabbitohs added another try with less than three minutes remaining off a Hawkins kick which was fumbled by Miller, and lock forward Matthew French saw his opportunity to dive on the loose ball and score. Hawkins missed the conversion attempt as the final score remained 34-16.

v Newcastle, 1:00pm

LOSS 14-22

Late Changes - Rahme, Levi and Laui are out. Grossemy starts at prop, Kokkinos at second row, Hawe-De-Thierry on the bench. Chapman is the concussion sub. South Sydney got off to a slow start in the U21s fixture, as the Knights put on three tries to take a commanding 16 nil lead. A positional switch saw Towns move back to fullback and Kaho to the wing. With 4 minutes on the clock, South Sydney got into good field position, and a swift backline movement saw Macey score in the corner just before halftime. A strong run on the try line saw Hawe-De-Thiery score, before Newcastle were in again from a intercept. A final try by centre Saldanha was not enough as South Sydney went doen 14 to 22.
