3 losses in a row
More injuries and SOO commitments and another loss against a Top 8 opponent. 4 losses against team in the Top 8 so far this season. The past month has been a struggle, as errors and focus on the game seemed to have been a struggle. Once again we had a period where we lost control of the game and let in 22 unanswered points. While we just can't give away 15 penalties/6-agains in any game these days. We drop back to 8th and are hanging on to a spot in the 8 on for and against. Still 8 more wins to make the finals. Finally a home game, to honour Jai Arrow as part of our month of Thursday Night Football.
Fifita scores upon return
Fifita has been on the sidelines for 8 weeks and finally made a welcome return from his hamstring injury. Playing again on the right he eased his way back in. But his power close to the line was back as he scored a great try to get South Sydney back into the game. He will be better for the run too.
Mazzone 4 tries and Pele double
Jordi Mazzone is making a bit of a name for himself on the wing in reserve grade. His speed was great to see as he scored 4 tries, some from long range. Thats 9 tries from 7 game so far this season. While up front Franklin Pele is making good progress in his fitness after his stint in FRance, and on the weekend his size and strength helped him score two tries. He had a real impact off the bench.
Jennings and Cresswell double
Jennings is settling into the step up from U19s. On the weekend he scored two tries working a great combination with Matthew Humphries. He was rewarded for his effort by being called up onto the extended first grade bench and being selected in the NSW U19s. While lost Feast to injury, it gave another U19 player Caleb Cresswell in senior grade debut where he made the post of by scoring 2 tries on the wing. It was a strong win by the U21 boys as they work their way back up the table.
Players protest at 6-agains
It is not just the long term footy fans who are up in arms over the 6 agains, we are also seeing the football players now acting as one and protesting the impact that is having to the game. A delegation went to NRL HQ during the week to voice the opinion on what has occured to the game, increased injuries, player unaware of what they were just penalised for and referees not having to explain to anyone why they awarded a 6-again call. While we don't want to back to the wrestle aspect of the game, there is a genuine fear that fatigue is causing more injuries, concussion issues, and that fatigue results in more 6 agains. How the NRL reacts to the players concerns will be of interest.
Round 14 - Stat Attack
Statistically it was another poor game. Completions improved to 77% from 71% last week. Errors were improved to 10 from 15 again last week. We gave away 10 penalties and 5 6-again calls from 5 last week. Our worst all season. Souths Effective 1st tackle dropped to a very poor level of 40.6m from 35.2m last week. Our missed tackles improved but still in a poor level of 37 from 39 last week. Opposition offloads improved to 7 from 14 last week.
Looking at our left side defence - Johnston-Siegwalt-Walker-Duncan (0-5-3-2) dropped to 10 from 9 last week. On the right side Kosi-Graham-Ward-Fifita (1-6-4-2) dropped to 13 from 7 last week. Ruck defence Tatola/Keppie/Hubner-BSmith/Garlick-Kolomatangi/Aitken-Murray/Aitken (1-4-4-4) improved to 13 from 20 missed tackles last week.
Our go forward dropped to 1305m from 1855m last week. With our props go forward dropped to a horrendous level of 261m compared to 403m last week. Our worst all season. Hybner and Garlick made 10+m per run. Koloamatangi, Tatola, Murray, Gray and Graham made 100+m in the match. Defensively Duncan was our best in the tackling raking up 49 tackles. Tatola, Hubner, Aitken and Johnston one didn't miss a tackle.
